Good Morning, Sheetheads!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ “Top Gun: Maverick” has been cleared for takeoff! Tom Cruise’s long-awaited return to the cockpit as hotshot pilot ‘Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’ was delayed by the pandemic, pushing back the movie’s planned release date several times. It has now been slotted in for a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival, and is set to hit theaters on May 27. Cannes runs from May 17 to May 28. The full lineup of selections for the festival will be revealed in April.
-Variety
★ Billie Lourd is a married woman. The “American Horror Story” star tied the knot with fiancé Austen Rydell on Saturday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Lourd reconnected with Rydell in 2017 after they dated for a time when they were younger. They were first spotted together when Rydell accompanied the actress on the family trip to Norway on the anniversary of the death of her mother, Carrie Fisher. The pair got engaged in June, 2020, and welcomed their first baby together, son Kingston Fisher, later that year.
-People
★ “The Lord of the Rings” alum Sean Astin is joining the cast of Dwayne Johnson’s “Young Rock” in the role of The Rock’s childhood nemesis. As a recurring guest star for the comedy’s upcoming second season, Astin will play ‘Dr. Julian Echo’ in the show’s fast-forwards. Dr. Echo is now a chiropractor from Minnesota, who holds a grudge. “Young Rock” Season 2 will continue with stories inspired by Johnson’s upbringing before turning into The Rock, furthering the storylines from Season 1 and introducing new chapters.
-Yahoo
★ Daniel Radcliffe is denying speculation that he could play ‘Wolverine’. He’s been suggested as a potential replacement for Hugh Jackman as the superhero, but he doubts that Marvel will choose him to play the character. Radcliffe has previously suggested that he doesn’t want to play Wolverine because his love for the ‘X-Men’ films means he doesn’t want to see them remade.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Kid Cudi — has been cast in Brittany Snow’s directorial debut “September 17th”. The pair recently collaborated on the horror film “X”. Cudi said: “I couldn’t believe that she wanted me in it…It’s gonna be awesome. Really great script.”
• Doja Cat — has sparked speculation she has a collab with Dua Lipa coming. The ‘Woman’ hitmaker took to Instagram to post a selfie, and jokingly claimed that Lipa is “trapped” in her “basement”. Several fans commented that this could mean the pair have recorded a duet together.
• Spice Girls – may be set to reunite with Victoria Beckham.  They’ve reportedly been having meetings about a world tour in 2023, and hope to end the run of shows with a performance at the Glastonbury festival. Beckham hasn’t performed with the group since the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony in London.
• The Black Keys – dropped the new single/music video ‘Wild Child’ last week, and announced their 11th studio album “Dropout Boogie” will come out May 13. It features guest appearances by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, and Kings of Leon’s Angelo Petraglia. A summer tour was also announced. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mvtkk6ra
• Arcade Fire — played a benefit at the Toulouse Theatre in New Orleans on Monday to raise money for non-profit Plus 1’s Ukraine relief fund. The group shared a poster for the show on social media, which encouraged attendees to “pay what you can”.
• The Beatles – The immersive exhibit, a complement to Peter Jackson’s docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back”, opens at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this Friday. The Hall promises it to be “packed full of Beatles-focused activities”, and items loaned by bandmembers and their estates.
• The Rolling Stones – have announced 14 shows across 10 European countries this summer. The “Sixty” tour, celebrating the group’s 60th anniversary, kicks off June 1 in Madrid. Keith Richards has also confirmed that he and Mick Jagger have been writing music with new drummer Steve Jordan, and “came up with some, 8 or 9 new pieces of material. Which is overwhelming by our standards.”
• Luke Combs — closed the London leg of the international country music festival “C2C: Country to Country” by having Ed Sheeran join him on stage. They dueted on Sheeran’s 2017 song ‘Dive’, which Combs has covered live for years. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc2rfrz3
• Carrie Underwood – has teased she has something big planned for this Friday. It’s been more than 3 years since she dropped a full-length studio album, and despite her recent Christmas and gospel albums, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter of her career. Monday, she posted a video featuring a night sky with ethereal music playing as the words “Coming Friday March 18″ flash onscreen.
• Dolly Parton – has bowed out of this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination. She tweeted: “Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated…I don’t feel that I have earned that right.” She left her options open for the future, though, writing: “This has, however, inspired me to put out a hopefully great rock ‘n’ roll album at some point in the future.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

SYMBOL SIGNALS:
We all know 1 or 2 people around the office who are seemingly incapable of composing an email without including a ‘smiley-face’ or a ‘winkie face’ or some other emoji before hitting “send”. Well, they might want to reconsider. Researchers at Tel Aviv University found that workers who frequently use emojis and other graphics in their emails are seen as less authoritative. In addition, these employees are seen to be less powerful. The aim of the study was to determine whether the use of images in emails influences the perception of employees at work. And, it seems, emojis should be used with caution. The scientists concluded: “Our advice: think twice before sending a picture or emoji to people in your organization, or in any other context in which you wish to be perceived as powerful.”
(Less powerful? Less FLIRTY, I’m gonna say!)
(838 emojis to choose from, and you’re telling me I can’t use ANY of them?)
(Believe me – if I’m using an emoji face in a work email, it’s much more likely to be the ‘confused face’ than the ‘smiley face’!  — or possibly the ‘vomit face’!)

HAIR CARE:
A hair salon owner in England has decided that a 4-day workweek is enough. Joel McCauley, who runs Slunks in Cardiff, decided to let staff work a shorter week in March 2020, when the pandemic hit. But after noticing his employees were happier, healthier and more relaxed after he introduced the measure, he decided to make it permanent. And here’s the weird thing: Workers are still being paid for a full 5-day week, plus part-timers were given a boost in pay. McCauley says he’s seen the benefits, with his team having more energy and a surge in productivity. Now, he’s urging other businesses to follow suit, saying: “This is simply a better, healthier way of working…Outside work, you can be a better person, a better parent, a better member of the community.”
(Hold your horses…I’ve already dropped off my resume!)
(The boss here was thinking of giving us an extra day off around here, too. The only problem is that no one can think of a way to get (***afternoon guy***) to work minus one day per week!)

THE BRACKET – CRACK IT:
The March Madness college basketball tournament has just begun, and in many cases, you still have time to submit your bracket. But have you thought about applying some science to your strategy? Data scientists from the University of Illinois were asked for some tips on filling out your NCAA Tournament bracket. According to the guys who should know, the best thing to do is to pick who you think will be the Final Four contestants, and work backwards from there. Doing that supposedly gives you a higher bracket score, on average, than picking the winners of the first-round games and continuing in order. If you’re submitting multiple brackets, starting with the Final Four is still a good strategy; but you should pick some different Final Four teams to boost your chances at winning. By the way, there are more than 9 quintillion possible bracket combinations. HANDY LINK: http://bracketodds.cs.illinois.edu/pool.html (How many brackets does that mean I’ll need to do?)
(That’s the difference between basketball and hockey. In hockey, when you’re down to the “final four”, you’re talking about teeth!)
(I think I’ve already had just about all the March Madness that I can handle . . .)

DID YOU KNOW?
It may be unlikely that you ever have a chance to travel to outer space, but your name can. NASA is collecting names to be put on a flash drive and sent into space on the Orion spacecraft, scheduled to launch later this year. The initiative is part of the agency’s uncrewed “Artemis I” mission, which is the first mission of the Artemis program to eventually return astronauts to the moon. It’s free to add your name to the flash drive, which NASA says is a way to get people excited about the program and “inspire the next generation.” Since opening the submissions earlier this month, the space agency has already received over one million names. (I don’t even like to see my name in CYBER space!)

• “St Urho’s Day”, celebrating the (tongue-in-cheek) saint who supposedly ‘cleared the grasshoppers out of Finland’. The mock holiday is observed in parts of Canada and the USA.
