Happy St Paddy’s Day, for Sheet’s Sake!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Fractures around Bob Saget’s eye sockets and bleeding around his brain which lead to his death were possibly caused by the comedian hitting “something hard, covered by something soft,” such as a carpeted floor, according to a report released this week. In the incident report from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Orlando, a Chief Medical Examiner said the fractures “would have stunned Mr. Saget,” and he would have experienced dizziness. Had he been with others at the time, they would have noticed “confusion, balance, and/or slurred speech.” It does not pinpoint a location for Saget’s fall. Also this week, local authorities were permanently blocked from releasing photos and videos taken of Saget’s body and his personal effects, under a ruling issued by a judge, after a request from Saget’s wife Kelly Rizzo and his daughters.

★ Anna Sorokin, who was born in Russia and became a German citizen as a teen, is being deported to Germany after exhausting appeals to remain in the U.S. The subject of the Netflix hit “Inventing Anna” had fought to stay in the United States. She became notorious for creating a fake identity as German heiress Anna Delvey, which she used to scam financial institutions, banks, hotels and individuals to the tune of $275,000. She was arrested in 2017, convicted of grand larceny in New York court in 2019, and was sentenced to 4-12 years in prison.

★ “The Conners” star Sara Gilbert has signed on for a role in “80 for Brady”, a star-studded road trip movie being produced by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. The 7-time Super Bowl champion also plans to appear in the film as himself. Co-stars include Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Sally Field and Lily Tomlin. The film is inspired by the true story of 4 New England Patriots fans who went on a life-changing trip to see Brady and the Patriots play in Super Bowl LI in 2017.

★ Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has always been a ladies’ man. And maybe that explains what was in his fanny pack in that infamous 1994 throwback photo—you know the one—that shows Johnson rocking the stylish accessory with a black turtleneck, silver chain and jeans (not to mention, an incredible haircut). He previously teased what the bag contained during season 1 of “Young Rock”, but on “Daily Pop”, Johnson revealed what was in there. With a laugh, he said: “Phone numbers. And stuff like that.” What else? According to The Rock, “a lot of inappropriate things I can’t mention right now.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

JUST ORDER THE “GOOFY MEAL”:
Disney’s latest menu item just might be its most polarizing yet. Disneyland in California has introduced – wait for it – peanut butter and jelly pasta. The dish, which is being called a “dessert pasta,” is now available as part of the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival. Peanut butter & jelly mac consists of macaroni noodles coated in a peanut butter sauce and finished off with a dollop of strawberry jelly, a sprinkle of brown sugar streusel, and a layer of strawberry crackle, which is pretty much a serving of Pop Rocks. And it might not taste as hideous as your face is showing you think it is.  One food writer said her first bite was “savory and strange” because she only got the peanut butter-coated pasta, but on her next bite, “All of a sudden, there was a savory/sweet/fruity combination that worked, especially propelled by the popping sensation that lasted through the bite.” She says it might not be the sort of thing she would order again and again, “but it definitely proved to be a worthy experiment”. Dessert pasta is a concept that dates back to the Italian Renaissance.
(They’re right. That could be the most controversial thing available at Disney. And this is the place that sells a Coke for 5 bucks!)
(Makes you wonder – what character came up with this?)

SCIENTISTS SAY:
➢ A team of European scientists claims to have successfully decoded pigs’ grunts. After analyzing over 7,000 recordings from over 400 pigs, scientists at the University of Copenhagen have become the first in the world to decode pig grunts into identifiable emotions. The team developed an algorithm capable of determining whether a specific pig is experiencing positive emotions (happy, excited), negative emotions (scared, stressed), or somewhere in between. The study authors say these findings can identify the emotions a pig is experiencing at a particular time and could help improve pig and animal welfare all over the world. (The most-often heard grunt was translated to: “Eat beef!)
➢ An implanted “drug factory” the size of a pinhead could cure a patient’s cancer in less than a week. That’s according to bioengineers at Rice University who say the new treatment can completely eradicate late-stage ovarian and colorectal cancers in as few as 6 days. The tiny implants, tested on mice, continuously deliver a high dose of interleukin-2 to the tumor region in the patient. Interleukin-2 is a natural compound which activates the immune system’s white blood cells to fight the cancer.
➢ Italian researchers have come up with an AI system to predict if a relationship will stand the test of time. The scientists used a complex machine learning process to determine the “most important predictors of union dissolution” among over 2,000 married or cohabiting couples. In short, through the magic of computers, they were able to reveal the 2 key factors to predict if your marriage is doomed. And those factors are: #1: The life satisfaction of both partners, and #2: The female partner’s percentage of housework. (Great. Now I’ve even got a computer telling me it’s my turn to scrub the toilet!)

HOW THE WORLD CELEBRATES ST PATRICK’S DAY:
• London, England – Thousands gather for festivities and a concert in Trafalgar Square, where fountain waters are dyed green.
• Munich, Germany – Germany’s St Patrick’s Day Parade is considered one of the largest anywhere outside of Ireland.
• New York NY – The annual St Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City, the world’s largest, has honored the patron saint of Ireland for over 250 years, since 1762.
• Singapore – Members of the city-state’s Irish community come together to celebrate in a 3-day-long street festival. Events include performances, parades, and Irish food & drink.
• Sydney, Australia – St Patrick himself (at least a good replica) makes an appearance in the Sydney parade, which features more than 70 floats to represent all 32 counties of Ireland.
• Washington DC – Green water flows and geysers from the large fountain on the South Lawn of the White House.
• Around here – The usual drunks drink at their usual haunts, and wonder why their beer’s green!

2-STEP GREEN BEER (NO BS!):
Makes: 1 pint
• 2 drops green food coloring
• 1 bottle light-colored beer (your choice)

1. Drop food coloring into the bottom of a chilled pint glass.
2. Top with your favorite light-colored beer. Enjoy!
(So easy, I could do it even after a few pints of normal-colored beer!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Chicagoans were happy to welcome back a beloved tradition on the weekend as the city celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by once again dying its river green and holding its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 3 years. The parade was canceled the past 2 years because of the pandemic. Throngs of people turned out Saturday despite the bitter cold and snow. About 40 pounds (18kg) of powdered dye were used to turn the Chicago River bright green. The tradition started in 1962 with a dye plumbers used to test for leaks in pipes. Now, the city uses a more environmentally-friendly powder made from vegetables.

BS CHRONOMETER 03.17.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “St Patrick’s Day”, the Irish national holiday that began as a ‘solemn religious observance’ to honor St Patrick (389-461 AD), patron saint of Ireland. It’s a public holiday in Ireland, Montserrat, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland & Labrador. Some fast facts …
– It’s been an Irish holiday for 1,500 years.
– The world’s largest “St Patrick’s Parade” is in NYC, where over a million spectators and 100,000 participants usually turn out. A tradition since 1762, the parade lasts about 6 hours.
– It was first celebrated in Canada in 1765 in Québec City QC.
– Green is associated with “St Patrick’s Day” because it’s the color of Spring, Ireland, and the shamrock.
• “Corned Beef & Cabbage Day”, you may think that corned beef and boiled cabbage is a traditional Irish dish for St. Patrick’s Day, actually it is not. It is an Irish-American invention, originating when Irish immigrants discovered that beef was cheaper than pork in America at the time.
• “Submarine Day”, to commemorate this date in 1898, when Irish-born engineer John Philip Holland demonstrated a submarine he designed, the “Holland VI”, for the U.S. Navy. During the demonstration, the vessel was submerged for 1 hour and 40 minutes. (That seemed to “go down” well…)
• “Camp Fire Girls Day”, the sister organization to the Boy Scouts of America. In 1975, the name was changed to Camp Fire Boys and Girls, in 2001 to Camp Fire USA, and to Camp Fire in 2012.
• “Absolutely Incredible Kid Day”, encouraging adults to let kids know just how amazing and valuable they are. The idea is to write a note (text?) of support and encouragement to a kid of your choice.

BULL’S BITS

BS WHACK O’FACTS:
✓ It could have been called St. Maewyn’s Day. St. Patrick’s birth name was Maewyn Succat, but he changed it to Patricius after becoming a priest.
✓ St. Patrick’s color was actually blue. Green only became associated with the day after it was linked with the Independence movement of the late 18th century.
✓ Although St. Patrick is given credit for driving the snakes out of Ireland, fossil records show that the country has never been home to any snakes.
✓ Holy trinity aside, later interpretations of the meaning of a clover’s leaves were that they represent hope, love, and faith. If there’s a fourth leaf, it symbolizes luck, which is why we consider four-leaf clovers to be lucky.
✓ There’s no corn in corned beef.  That’s a nod to the large grains of salt that were historically used to cure meats, which were known as “corns.”
✓ There are no female leprechauns. In traditional Irish folk tales, there are only nattily-attired little guys.
✓ Until the 1970s, St. Patrick’s Day was a religious occasion, and thus a dry holiday where the only alcohol available in Ireland was at the national dog show.

• True or false – a shamrock is a weed? [TRUE, from the clover family]
• Who’s taller – a leprechaun or ‘GI Joe’? [The original GI Joe was just under 12 inches, while your average leprechaun is about 24 inches tall, according to Irish folklore]
• What sound should you listen for in order to catch a leprechaun? [Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by listening for the sound of his shoemaker’s hammer]
• What does an Irishman call his ‘companion for life’ – his shillelagh (shi-lay-lee), his whiskey jug, or his beloved wee wife? [His shillelagh. Made from blackthorn, they rarely wear out]
