You’re Up to Your Eyeballs in Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Today props from the hit AMC drama “Mad Men” are going on display at The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC to mark the end of the long-running TV show. The Emmy Award-winning series wraps its 7-season run this Spring and to mark the occasion, costumes and props are being exhibited in a new display at the museum. Among the artifacts: a suit and fedora hat worn by Jon Hamm as ‘Don Draper’, and the original script from the Season 1 finalé, entitled “The Wheel”. The final 7 episodes of “Mad Men” kick off on April 5th. (Between this and Hamm’s rehab, promotion is really ramping up!)

★ Zayn Malik is said to be ”at peace” after quitting One Direction. The 22-year-old announced his exodus on Wednesday and has reportedly assured friends there is ”no bad blood” between him and his former bandmates. Meantime, label boss Simon Cowell is reportedly ”really proud” of Malik but also ”really sad” about him leaving. According to Cowell’s ex-girlfriend, singer Sinitta, Zayn was the most reluctant to join the act in the first place. Malik quit just days after leaving the “On the Road Again” world tour due to stress. The group is continuing the tour as a 4-piece. (UK supermarket chain Lidl has found the funny side of the situation, reducing the price of its ‘One Direction Easter Egg’ … by one-fifth.)

★ As expected, director Sam Taylor-Johnson has walked away from the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie franchise after helming just 1 film. Her leaving is attributed to on-set clashes with “50 Shades” author EL James. Taylor-Johnson has previously said of making the movie: “It was difficult, I’m not going to lie.” According to a trade mag, screenwriter Kelly Marcel will also not return for “Fifty Shades Darker”, the next instalment in the series. Despite the troubles, the original film pulled in $558 million in worldwide box office. (Not due to the directing, we’re fairly sure.)

‘MANSPLAINING’ EXPLAINED:
The concept of ‘mansplaining’ – a man interrupting a woman to tell her what’s what – has become a hot-button issue of late. But actually it’s nothing new. A few facts about the phenomenon …
✓ “The Atlantic” has published “A Cultural History of Mansplaining” that traces the concept all the way back to a 1903 issue of its very own magazine. That cited article was titled “Why Women Do Not Wish the Suffrage.” Written by a man.
✓ Before the term was even coined, a study in 1984 discovered that female doctors are up to twice as likely to be cut off in conversations with their patients than male practitioners.
✓ The actual word ‘mansplaining’ is said to have made its first published appearance in a 2008 “Los Angeles Times” excerpt from Rebecca Solnit’s book entitled “Men Explain Things to Me”.
✓ A 2012 study shows that, in workplace environments where decisions are being made, women speak up to 75% less than men.
✓ In the media, men write 80% of tradition opinion pieces, and 67% of them online.
Last year, a Salon.com writer argued that the very term itself is “inflaming online gender wars instead of clarifying them.” This, of course, was written by a man. (So whatcha think? Is the act offensive or not? Is the word offensive or not?)
