BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Netflix has responded to Steven Spielberg’s push to block streaming movies from the Oscars. A Tweet from the streaming service began with: “We love cinema. Here are some things we also love:
-Access for people who can’t always afford, or live in towns without, theaters
-Letting everyone, everywhere enjoy releases at the same time
-Giving filmmakers more ways to share art
The post concluded with, “These things are not mutually exclusive.” Though it did not mention Spielberg, it was a pretty clear shot at his recent public stance. Last week, it was reported that Spielberg is expected to propose a rule change at next month’s Academy Board of Governors’ meeting that would restrict eligibility for films that do not have a significant theatrical run.

★ Will Smith will play the father of iconic tennis players Serena and Venus Williams in the biopic “King Richard”. The story will revolve around Richard Williams, who — despite having no background in tennis —instructed his daughters in the sport, starting when they were four years old — and how he overcame hardship, skepticism, and controversy. Serena has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and Venus has seven Grand Slam singles, and the pair have combined for 14 Grand Slam doubles championships.

★ “Riverdale” shut down production for the day on Monday after the news of Luke Perry’s death was announced. Perry, who suffered a stroke last week, played Fred Andrews on the teen drama – the father of main character Archie Andrews, played on TV by K.J. Apa. To-date, Perry appeared in 52 of the 57 “Riverdale” episodes. The show is currently in production on its third season and has already been renewed for Season 4. The CW released a statement saying, “Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all.”

★ More than 25 years after “The Sandlot” debuted on the big screen, the story will continue on the small screen. Writer and director David Mickey Evans made the announcement, revealing that the original cast members will be returning for the television project. Evans says that the series will be set in the ’80s, featuring the members of The Sandlot in their 30s (the original 1993 movie was set in 1962).

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Camila Cabello – turned 22 on the weekend, and to celebrate, she shared her list of 22 life lessons on Twitter. In the list are key lessons about sleep, social media, and family, including: “Life is too short to hang out with people you don’t like, be in relationships with people that don’t make you happy, or [to] do things you hate.”
• Liam Payne — has hit back after being blamed by fans for delaying a One Direction reunion. Replying to a post, Payne wrote: “Can people stop passing blame to me about this? I get asked this ridiculous question 500x a day (exaggeration) … but still this band has 3 other members. You want the answer, ask them.”
• Michael Jackson – His estate has taken another swipe at the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” which alleges he sexually abused boys, by releasing a concert film on YouTube the exact length of the first part of the documentary, which aired on HBO Sunday night. On Monday, a second concert film, “Live at Wembley Stadium” aired at the same time as the second part of “Leaving Neverland.”
• Nirvana — Their “Live At The Paramount” Seattle concert is finally getting a release on vinyl on April 12. The famed 1991 show was released in DVD and Blu-ray release to coincide with the 20th anniversary of “Nevermind” in 2011.
• U2 – will release “U2: The Europa EP”, to celebrate Record Store Day on April 13. It will feature an exclusive new mix of previously unreleased material from their recent eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour, plus ‘Euro’-tinged remixes of ‘New Year’s Day’ ‘Love Is All We Have Left’.
• Alice Cooper – has announced a month-long summer US tour as part of his “Ol’ Black Eyes is Back” global trek. Meantime, his supergroup “The Hollywood Vampires” has announced a 7-date US west coast run beginning in Las Vegas May 10.
• Mötley Crüe — have reunited in the studio to record new music for their biopic “The Dirt” but Nikki Sixx says that the group has not discussed the idea of playing together live again. The band signed an agreement to not tour again before they kicked off their farewell tour, but the idea of the band reuniting for one-off live shows doesn’t seem to violate that agreement.
• Duran Duran — Simon Le Bon and John Taylor will induct Roxy Music into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on March 29 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
• Carrie Underwood — will bring her “Cry Pretty Tour” to UK arenas this summer. She announced the news by waving the Union Jack flag in a video on her Instagram account. She’ll play shows in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and Manchester, before wrapping the run with her biggest headline show at London’s The SSE Arena, Wembley on July 4.
• Trace Adkins – will hit the road with Clint Black for a co-headlining tour this summer. The pair’s “Hits. Hats. History Tour” is scheduled to begin May 2 in Charlotte, N.C. Nine stops through Aug. 9 are currently scheduled, with additional dates to be announced. Terri Clark, John Berry and Craig Campbell will be joining them on the road.
AN ECO-VENIENT TRUTH:
Sure, it is a good thing to make an effort to purchase “eco-friendly” products whenever possible. But a new study published in Frontiers in Psychology says that those of us who buy that stuff in hopes of canceling out their negative impact on the planet are damaging Earth even more. Researchers found that the “eco-guilt” we feel about our carbon footprint spurs us to seek out “environmentally friendly” products and services in a bid to counterbalance our bad consumption habits. In the end, people might end up purchasing extra “eco-labelled” groceries or products and then reason that as a result, they can justify jetting south for a vacation. Or they might take longer showers because they lowered the water temperature. An environmental psychologist says what we should all be concentrating on is consuming less overall – including so-called “eco-friendly” products. He also says it would help if scanning systems in supermarkets provided customers with an accumulated carbon footprint estimate of their shopping basket.
(And of course, that computer system would be powered by an electricity-guzzling supercomputer?)
(I’m doing MY part. I started “shower-free Sundays” on the weekend…)

SLEEPING LIKE A BABY MAKER:
The running joke when someone is expecting their first child is that they can plan to say “goodbye to sleep” for a while. But new research says not only is that true, but first-time moms can expect to face about six YEARS of sleep deprivation. Researchers tracking the sleep of thousands of men and women as their family size increased have found that shuteye hit a low about three months after birth – with the effect strongest in women. And while parents gradually saw an improvement in their sleep as their firstborn grew, it seems their night-time rest was never quite the same again. The study found that women lost an hour of sleep per night for the first three months after the birth of a first child, and about 40 minutes of sleep a night in the year after a baby arrived, regardless of whether it was a first child or not. Dads? They lost about 13 minutes per night.
(So take heart, Moms! The lack of sleep won’t last forever…only about six years…)
(Did they mention that you won’t have any money either?)
(But its the dads who lose sleep when their daughters become teenagers!)

SOME OF THE UNHEALTHIEST FOODS ON THE PLANET:
✗ Coffee creamer: Often have no cream! The top three ingredients can be water, sugar and soybean or canola oil. Use milk instead. (Thanks for wrecking my morning…forever!)
✗ Fruit juice: Even all-natural grape juice has up to 36 grams of sugar per cup. That’s the same as four Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. (From now on: 2 donuts and a half-glass of grape juice.
✗ Deep fried foods: They contain high levels of inflammatory products which develop in the frying process. Over time, disease can result. (And zits?)
✗ Bacon & Sausage: Processed meats are not only usually red meats, they also tend to have inflammatory compounds…plus nitrates and nitrites which can turn carcinogenic in high heat. (But I thought bacon was the perfect food…)
✗ Sugary cereals: Can lead to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. And now, experts are saying that many have ingredients thought to be carcinogenic. (Back to Grandma’s porridge…)
✗ Frozen entrées: It’s the preservatives. And the salt. Go for organic, low-sodium, low sugar frozen options. (I think I just bought a fish!)
✗ Restaurant desserts: It’s the salt. Not to mention the sugar. And Calories. And fat. It’s easy to consume an extra 1000 calories and 75 grams of fat when ordering off the dessert menu. (It’s also easy to spend another twelve bucks!)
