★ “Mickey 17” didn’t get the warmest welcome at the box office. The sci-fi comedy, starring Robert Pattinson as a pair of interstellar doppelgangers, earned an estimated opening weekend of $18.5 million, a slow start for a film with a $118 million production budget. “Captain America: Brave New World” finally slipped to second place in its 4th weekend of release, and bumped its domestic total to $177 million. The film is far-and-away the year’s biggest title in North America, though it remains one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lowest-grossing entries. “Last Breath” was third over the weekend, and “The Monkey” fourth.

★ John Goodman suffered an injury while working on a Tom Cruise movie. A Warner Bros. Pictures spokesperson said the 72-year-old “experienced a hip injury,” and “received immediate medical attention that led to a brief delay in shooting to allow him time to recover.” TMZ reports he fell while on set, but it was not related to a stunt. The plan is for shooting to resume this week on the project from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which is currently untitled and is being filmed in England. It also stars Jesse Plemons and Riz Ahmed.

★ In case you missed it on Friday, investigators announced that Gene Hackman died of causes related to cardiovascular illness and was probably alive for several days after his wife, Betsy Arakawa died in their secluded mountaintop home. The partially mummified remains of Hackman, who was 95, and 65-year-old Betsy Arakawa, 65, were discovered Feb. 26 by maintenance workers. Investigators say Arakawa likely died Feb. 11 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease spread by infected rodent droppings. Hackman, in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, was apparently unaware that his wife was dead.

SHOOTING THE BULL
THIS HANGOVER COULD HAVE BEEN AN EMAIL:
It may not be the thing you need to hear on the Monday morning after the time change, but according to an article published in the Harvard Business Review, workers can actually get “meeting hangovers” from attending an unhelpful meeting. A survey found that more than 90% of employees feel they’ve suffered from ‘meeting hangovers’, which are defined as “a period of diminished focus, motivation, or productivity following a bad meeting.” Steven Rogelberg, a professor at UNC Charlotte and author of “The Surprising Science of Meetings,” explained that the frustration of attending a bad – or unnecessary meeting continues to replay in workers’ heads – and they also tend to spread those negative emotions to colleagues, which also affects their co-workers’ productivity. The most-commonly reported reasons a meeting was “bad” were ‘Irrelevance’ and ‘Lack of a clear agenda or objectives’.
(Also, no pizza!)
(Bad meetings: Proof that not all hangovers come with a good story to tell!)

MAN’S BEST FIEND:
Have you ever had a dog that is ALWAYS hungry? Well, according to UK researchers, those pets, who tend to become overweight over time, have something in common with obesity-prone people. They found a genetic reason for many labradors’ – and some people’s – tendency to overeat. Changes in a particular gene interfere with a brain-signalling pathway that tells dogs – and people — when they’ve had enough to eat. In other words, the University of Cambridge team says, if you have a high genetic risk of obesity, you’re prone to gaining weight, unless you put tremendous effort into not doing so. And those with low genetic risk, “don’t have to work so hard.” Head of the study, Dr. Eleanor Raffan, said from that info, we can make this conclusion: “Owners of slim dogs are not morally superior – and the same is true of slim people”.
(So basically, my dog and I share more than just the couch… we also share snacks – AND genetics!)
(Great! Now I can blame my love for pizza…and my dog’s obsession with treats… on science. Thanks, genetics!)

MOOSEHEAD OF STATE:
A Canadian beer company is marketing what it says could be just the thing people need to endure the current tense political climate between their country and the USA. An ad from Moosehead Breweries appearing on social media reads: “Introducing the Presidential Pack. With 1,461 Canadian Lagers, it’s just enough to get through a full presidential term.” As you might have guessed, that would work out to one beer for each day of the Trump presidency. A press release points out: “It will take determination to weather 4 years of political uncertainty—and what better way to make it through each day than with a truly Canadian beer.” And how much does it cost for that serving of Canadian goodness to look forward to each day? A whopping $3,490 – plus tax and shipping. Canadian dollars, of course. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc7y5cnk
(Finally, a political strategy we can all agree on: Just drink through it!)
(One potential problem is this…if you know anything about beer, you know that it usually needs to be thrown out after a couple years. In that way, it’s just like a politician!)

DAYLIGHT SAVING OURSELVES:
Daylight Saving Time is back – but here’s the problem: “Springing forward” comes with a mental health price for some. You’ve no doubt heard of studies that warn of the physical risks that come with changing our clocks – increases in heart attacks and strokes, and vehicles accidents among them – but according to Dr. Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine, losing that hour of sleep, like we did over the weekend, can also wreak havoc with our mental well-being. Daylight saving time may worsen conditions like anxiety, depression, and seasonal affective disorder, because it can cause us to sleep less. ‘Springing forward’ is the most disruptive of the 2 annual time changes. Why? Exposure to light plays a key part in circadian rhythms, which can be thrown off by darker mornings and lighter evenings created by the time change. Circadian rhythms control vital functions like eating, mood, and sleep, all of which can be impacted by the one-hour shift. And you may continue to experience sleep deprivation for a few more days, because of going to bed later or waking up earlier than usual. One study found that people sleep 40 minutes less on Mondays after DST starts than they do on other nights of the year. Here are some ways to help your body adapt to the time change…
◾Improve your sleep habits: A consistent pattern can help make your bedtime easier to adjust to. (I’d love to — but kids!)
◾Enjoy sunny days: Take a good walk or sit in a park – Exposure to sunshine helps to adjust your internal clock. (Turns out, adjusting your internal clock is a lot easlier than changing my microwave clock!)
◾Follow a healthy diet: Don’t overdo caffeine or alcohol. Both can affect your sleep habits. (Could I have a Saturday do-over?)
◾Keep moving: Exercise, even in small amounts, helps you feel better and more energized. (It also helps me sleep — just thinking about it!)
(Actually, the reason I’m tired and confused has a lot more to do with Netflix than the clock change!)
(Daylight Saving Time: Where I lose an hour of sleep – but still find time to complain about it for a week!)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “International Day of Awesomeness”, a day to recognize that people are awesome every day, frequently don’t realize it, and their awesomeness is rarely recognized. LINK: http://dayofawesomeness.com
• “Workplace Napping Day”, observed since 1999 on the Monday after we lose an hour of sleep to Daylight Saving Time. Setting the clock ahead an hour can mess with our brains, causing fatigue and general air-headedness. A study of traffic accidents on the day following the ‘Spring Forward’ found an 8% increase.
• “Fill Our Staplers Day”, because every little insignificant function we perform in day-to-day life needs its own day, right? (I WILL fill my stapler, right after my nap!)
• “Commonwealth Day”, observed on the 2nd Monday in March, to honor the loose association of 56 countries in the British Commonwealth (the one-time British Empire). It now entails some 2.6 billion people, almost one-third of the world’s population.
• “Mario Day”, saluting anyone with that name because the abbreviated date (MAR-10) ‘sort-of’ spells “Mario”. Famous Marios: TV chef Mario Batali, NHL Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux, TV personality Mario Lopez, and ‘Mario’ of “Super Mario Bros” videogame fame, of course.
• “International Bagpipe Day”, to celebrate the world’s many bagpipes and piping traditions. LINK: http://www.internationalbagpipeorganisation.com
• “Salvation Army Day”, on the anniversary of its establishment in the US on this day in 1880. The Sally Ann was founded by William Booth in London in 1865, then came to NYC to provide food, shelter and clothing to needy Americans.
• “Pack Your Lunch Day”, from the classic PB&J to the Pinterest-worthy mason jar salad, homemade lunches are both fun and filling. Best of all, since you make it yourself, you can pack all your favorite foods! (But don’t pack yourself a lunch full of brownies — your mother taught you better than that.)
• “Landline Telephone Day”, On this day in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first ever telephone call, ringing his assistant to say: “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” Today, celebrate your landline, if you still have one. (…Grandmaw…)
• “Ranch Dressing Day”. It’s not only used on salads, but as a dipping sauce for chicken wings, pizza, veggies, french fries, mozzarella sticks, and more. Its cooling base makes it ideal for deep-fried or spicy food. And, it can be used in making mac and cheese, casseroles, stuffing, potato salad, fried chicken, and tacos. (…and it was the only thing I drank when I went Keto…!)
