BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, the 5th installment in George Miller’s action franchise, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, and was given with a 7-minute standing ovation, as Miller and members of his cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, looked on. Anticipation has been high for Furiosa, which launches in North America on May 24. It comes 9 years after “Mad Max: Fury Road”, which starred Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, received rave reviews, made just under $400 million, and garnered 10 Oscar nods, winning 6.

★ Dean McDermott is taking his love to the ‘gram. The actor made his relationship with Lily Calo Instagram official by posting photos of the couple enjoying a date night in Los Angeles. Alongside snaps of the new couple posing in their coordinating pinstripe attire and her giving him a peck on the cheek, the former “Chopped Canada” host wrote: “Cuz she’s Magic!! #MyLovey.” And if you’re wondering how Tori Spelling—who filed for divorce from McDermott in March after nearly 18 years of marriage—felt about the social media move, she gave a subtle sign of support, by liking the post.
-E!
★ Cameron Diaz has been on a long break from acting, but she’s on her way back. Netflix has announced that her comeback movie “Back in Action” will debut in November. The streaming comedy premieres Nov. 15 and will find her starring alongside Jamie Foxx, with whom she headlined her last movie, the 2014 musical adaptation, “Annie.” This time, the duo plays former CIA agents who gave up the spy life to start a family, but wind up ‘back in action’ after their cover is blown.
-TheWrap
★ Nicolas Cage is returning to the Spider-Verse…sort of. The Oscar-winner has landed the lead role in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action “Spider-Man Noir” series. It will tell the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s superhero. Cage reprises the role after portraying Spidey in the 2018 animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
-TheWrap
★ Food Network has a new magical treat in store this holiday season: A ‘Harry Potter’-inspired baking competition. “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking” will feature “innovative pastry chefs” as they “craft spellbinding sweet creations” inspired by the films. The show will be filmed at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London’s “The Making of Harry Potter” location, giving the competitors “unprecedented access to actual sets where the films were made, as they present their creations to the judges and special guests.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Ed Sheeran—is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his breakthrough album “X” (Multiply) by posting acoustic versions of its songs on Instagram. He captioned a post for ‘I’m a Mess’ by saying he wrote it “in a big shower room coz it sounded good to sing in there. It was the final song I wrote for Multiply and still one of my fav tracks I’ve ever written.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2j9t6ftk
• Taylor Swift — has officially filed a trademark for “Female Rage: The Musical.” While it’s not clear what the trademark will be used for, she is currently using it as the title for the newly-added “The Tortured Poets Department” section of her live set, during which she performs songs from her new album.
• Eminem – may be ditching his ‘Slim Shady’ alter-ego. A fake obituary for Shady showed up in the Detroit Free Press as promotion for the rapper’s upcoming album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)”. A trailer for the album tells the story of “Who killed Slim Shady?” in the style of true crime shows. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2ppn6dys
• John Lennon – July 12, an expanded and newly remixed version of his 1973 solo album “Mind Games” will be released. The “Ultimate Collection” box set will include 6 CDs containing more than 5 hours of music, plus 2 Blu-Ray Audio Discs containing over 16 hours of music, plus a 128-page book. • Zach Bryan — suffered injuries in a side-by-side (off-road) accident that his girlfriend describes as “traumatizing.” On social media, Brianna LaPaglia (Brianna Chickenfry) wrote that at one point after the accident, “We thought, like, we were saying goodbye to each other.” The podcast host said that paramedics stitched up Bryan’s “huge gash”, which later ripped open when he tried to corral their cat. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mpkpezhk
• Luke Combs – Yesterday, he dropped his new single ‘Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma’, which will be featured in the “Twisters” movie, out July 19. • “Back to Black” (R, Biography/Music): The life and music of Amy Winehouse, told from her perspective, including the creation of one of the best-selling albums of all time. (Marisa Abela, Eddie Marsan, Jack O’Connell) Tomatometer: 39%

Panic ensues as they are terrorized by 3 masked strangers with seemingly no motive. (Madelaine Petsch, Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso) No Tomatometer score.
FOOD STUFF:
❑ A new survey has uncovered some of the strange ways people “jazz up” their salads – brace yourself. First, though, according to the poll of 2,000 Americans, the most popular salad toppings were found to be cheese (42%), tomatoes (37%), bacon (30%), croutons (28%), and cucumbers (27%). But what odd ingredients do some people add to an ordinary salad to make it extraordinary? How about banana? Meatballs? Marshmallows? Or peanut butter? Fancy some peppermint on top? Or maybe popcorn? (Oh, heck, it’s Friday – let’s go with “All of the above”!)
❑ As food mash-ups go, maybe someday it’ll be as popular as pineapple on pizza. Or mint and lamb. Or chicken and waffles. But I doubt it. The latest combo to go viral is…Dr. Pepper and Pickles. And according to those who know, it 100% slaps. TikTok user Mississippi Memaw shared her favorite “Pickle Dr. Pepper” order as she went through a Sonic Drive-thru, asking the worker to toss a few salty pickles into the super-sweet soda, and remarking that the server didn’t bat an eye at her order, proving it’s a pretty popular choice. Alternate recipe, according to one commenter: “The Witch Doctor”, a potion that includes a mixture of “several different sodas combined with pickles and lemons”. (Weird? Yes. But to me, it’s still not as bad as pineapple on pizza!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A Canadian city’s attempt to break the Guinness record for the largest gathering of people dressed as dinosaurs was disqualified — due to the unexpectedly high turnout. Travel Drumheller, the tourism organization for the Town of Drumheller, Alberta, said on Facebook that the record attempt in the city’s downtown attracted more than 3,000 people in dino-dress, but officials “could not obtain an exact measurement” of participants. A Guinness World Records adjudicator was present, and was able to record 3,000 people. However, a spokesperson said that photos and videos indicate there may have been “close to double” that many people, but an accurate count could not be obtained because officials were unprepared for such a massive turnout. So, the record set in Los Angeles in 2019 still stands. How many? 252 people. (I’d guess there are that many people dressed in dinosaur costumes in downtown LA EVERY day!)
➢ The livestream video Portal connecting New York to Dublin has been temporarily switched off — due to what organizers are calling “instances of inappropriate behavior.” The Portal streamed video between a Manhattan plaza and a Dublin street. But the installation’s sponsors shut the 24-hour video feed off Tuesday, stating that while “The overwhelming majority of visitors have behaved appropriately…instances of inappropriate behavior have come from a very small minority of Portal visitors and have been amplified on social media.” One TikTok user posted a video showing her flashing her breasts to the Portal shortly before the shut-off. (***CAUTION*** Keep your “Dublin” jokes to yourself!)

THE BEST DRINKING GAMES:
According to “experts” (Where do I apply to become an “expert” on this?)…
1. Never Have I Ever: Use ‘Never have I ever’ as a prefix to a sentence for something you’ve never done, and everyone who has done it has to take a sip.
2. Straight Face: Players write ridiculous or inappropriate sentences on pieces of paper. One at a time, each player chooses a slip of paper and attempts to read it without giggling or cracking a smile. If they fail, they drink.
3. Beer Pong: You know how it works. It’s not that complicated!
4. Flip Cup: Simply down your drink as quickly as possible, place it on the edge of the table, and hit its base as many times as it takes in order to ‘flip’ it so it lands face down. The first to complete a whole row of cups is the winner.
5. King’s Cup: Lay out a deck of cards face down, in a circle around a central cup. That’s the King’s Cup. Players take turns picking a card from the circle – each card has a different rule for making people drink. Best enjoyed with a large number of players – so you don’t incapacitate yourself too quickly!

DID YOU KNOW?
According to new research, if you text and drive, you may be a psychopath. The new data — from interviews with nearly 1,000 German drivers, found a shocking 61% admitted to “problematic” use of their devices while driving. Along with connections to ‘fear of missing out’ and anti-social behavior, problematic smartphone users were also associated to narcissism and psychopathy (which involves being highly manipulative, and a lack of morality and empathy). Recent unrelated research also connected drivers with deliberately loud cars to psychopathy. (At first, I was horrified about this, then I realized that if 61% of us are doing it, at least I’m “in style”!)

BS CHRONOMETER 05.17.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Pack Rat Day”, celebrating those who squirrel away all kinds of ‘stuff’. What’s the oddest thing you have that you refuse to throw away? (But I might need those old soup cans someday!)
• “World Hypertension Day”, an annual observance to highlight the fact that stroke, heart, and kidney diseases caused by high blood pressure are preventable.
• “Pizza Party Day”. Don’t question it. Just go with it…
• “Endangered Species Day”, to become educated about, and more aware of, threats to species, success stories in species recovery, and the opportunity to promote species conservation. (Is the concept of ‘civil discourse’ considered an ‘endangered species’?)
• “Bike to Work Day”, encouraging us to cycle to work, and to raise awareness of cyclists as they commute to and from work each day. (Current gas prices are all the encouragement I need . . .)
• “World Telecommunications Day”, a UN observance since 1969. The goal now is to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the internet and other communication technologies can bring to societies and economies, as ways to bridge the digital divide. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/34cmszb9
• “Pinot Grigio Day”. If you’ve never had this fine wine and want to know how it tastes, it’s been described as having a lighter-bodied flavor, with punchy acidity, and flavors of lemons, limes, green apples and honeysuckle. (…and it pairs well with MORE!)
• “Cherry Cobbler Day”, dedicated to the delicious tart dessert that many enjoy with ice cream.
• “Walnut Day”. Some Fun Walnut Facts:
⇒ Walnuts are the oldest known tree food, dating back to 10,000 BC!
⇒ 99% of the commercial US supply and 2/3 of the world trade of walnuts come from California.
⇒ Walnuts have always been considered important for their medicinal properties, including curing bad breath, reducing inflammation, and healing wounds.
⇒ More recently, the nutritional benefits of walnuts have become more well-known, especially their omega-3 fatty acid content.
⇒ The Greeks called walnuts ‘karyon’, meaning “head,” because the shell resembles a human skull and the walnut kernel itself looks like a brain!
• “NASCAR Day”, a celebration of NASCAR drivers, celebrities, corporate partners, media, and fans coming together to raise fund for charitable causes. Here are some BS FAKE NASCAR FACTS:
• Each time a driver passes ‘Go’, he collects $200.
• Drivers have the option of turning right.
• Every driver’s middle name is “Cooter”.
• All vehicle logos are ‘scratch and sniff’.
• You don’t watch it just for the crashes.
• Most of the jumpsuits worn by drivers are available at The Gap.
• It is possible to recreate the Daytona 500 at home by putting your dinky car collection into the toilet and flushing.
• Every car used in NASCAR races is an EV.
• Most drivers saved 15% or more on their car insurance by switching to Geico.
• It’s also fun to watch sober.
SATURDAY-
• “Visit Your Relatives Day”, a day to renew relationships with seldom-seen relatives. Uh, maybe there’s a reason they are seldom seen? (We’re visiting via Zoom again this year…)
• “No Dirty Dishes Day”. If nothing else, it’s a convenient excuse to order delivery…3 times.
• “HIV Vaccine Awareness Day”, promoting the continued urgent need for a vaccine to prevent HIV infection and AIDS.
• “Cheese Soufflé Day”, when we can all enjoy a little of this French delight. The word soufflé is the past participle of the French verb ‘souffler’, which means “to blow up” or “puff up.” Combine egg whites with custard, and it’ll puff up into a fine, golden soufflé when baked.
• “Speech Pathologist Day”. The field began growth in the 1920’s as speech pathologists focused on treating soldiers returning from war. Now, you’ll find them in hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, schools, early intervention settings, universities and private practices. Today, we recognize their awesome work.
• “International Museum Day”, established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums to draw attention to the world’s museums, no matter how large, small, or strange. Here are some truly odd ones:
– Air Sickness Bag Virtual Museum LINK: http://www.airsicknessbags.com
– Amsterdam Tattoo Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
– Sulabh International Museum of Toilets (New Delhi, India)
– Bata Shoe Museum (Toronto ON)

• “Personal Support Worker Day”, to recognize the essential service PSWs provide in sustaining our health-care system and providing high-quality community and home-based care.
• “Pizza Party Day”, Don’t question it. Just go with it…
• “Boys & Girls Club Day”, saluting the efforts of those who create and maintain facilities for safe recreational activities for young people, which help teach values and citizenship.
• “Devil’s Food Cake Day”, enjoyed by chocolate cake lovers around the world. It differs from a regular chocolate cake by its darker color, and it tends to be more moist and airy (but it’s never around here long enough for us to notice that…)
• “Accounting Day”, an annual observance to promote the profession and provide an opportunity for networking among accountants in public practice, industry, and government.
BS ACCOUNTANT JOKES:
☞ How can you tell if an accountant is extroverted? He looks at YOUR shoes while he’s talking to you, instead of his own.
☞ Why do accountants look forward to the weekend? Because they can wear casual clothes to work.
☞ If an accountant’s wife can’t sleep, what does she say? “Darling, tell me about your work.”
☞ What’s the difference between an accountant and a lawyer? The accountant knows he’s boring.
• “May Ray Day”, a day for getting outside, soaking up the sun’s rays, and celebrating the warmer weather. May is the last full month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when it’s starting to warm up pretty nicely, but it’s not yet so scorching hot that you can’t stand being outside. (The mosquitos, however, are another thing entirely…)
• “World IBD Awareness Day”, to bring together those affected by Crohn’s and Colitis, as well as their friends and family members, and even those who knew nothing about them, in order to increase awareness.
• “National Hepatitis Testing Day”, a day to encourage testing for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Over 4 million Americans are living with HBV or HCV, and about 2 million don’t know they are infected.
MONDAY-
• “Victoria Day” in Canada, commemorating the birth of Queen Victoria (May 24, 1819), who reigned from 1837-1901. Celebration of her birthday in Canada began in 1845. “Victoria Day” originated in 1901 after her death. Since 1952, it has been celebrated on the Monday preceding May 25th.
• “International Red Sneakers Day”, to save the lives of those with food allergies while sharing the story of 11-year-old Oakley Debbs, who loved red sneakers. • “Be a Millionaire Day”, a celebration of the joys of achieving millionaire status. Here’s how you go about it: First, get a whole bunch of money …

• “World Bee Day”, to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development. LINK: https://www.un.org/en/observances/bee-day
