It shows clips of Charlie Vickers’ ‘Halbrand’ – who was revealed to actually be ‘Sauron’ at the end of Season 1 – as a voice says: “An evil, ancient and powerful, has returned”. The teaser cuts quick between scenes of Sauron moving through a courtyard while distressed people flee in all directions behind him, a woman staring down a sea monster and a shot of ‘Númenor’. And as bits of ceiling collapse in Moria, a man says: “Every soul in Middle-earth is in peril”. The Rings of Power season premiere date is Aug. 29. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4yf9kdyu

SHOOTING THE BULL

WELL-BEING ONLINE:
In news that just might come as a surprise anyone who uses their screen time to silently comb the social media profiles of their ex and his or her perfect new partner, a recent study of 2.4 million people found that, believe it or not, being online might actually improve your well-being. The research, published in the journal Technology, Mind and Behaviour, claims to include more geographic diversity than most previous studies, which might make it more accurate than previous conclusions, which have tended to find the opposite. It was found that people with internet access scored 8% higher on measures of life satisfaction and contentment with their social life, and sense of purpose than those without internet. That’s about the same positive impact people get from taking a walk in nature.
(The way I see it, you could probably double your benefit by taking a walk in nature WHILE you’re online. HELLO Pokemon!)
(Thank God! For a while there, I though they were going to tell me I needed to go outside and touch grass or something!)

NEW FOOD NEWS:
❑ Pizza Hut is finally getting into the burger game – sort of. This week, the restaurant announced its brand-new “Cheeseburger Melt”, which consists of Parmesan-crusted thin crust melt, folded and filled with beef, plus smoked bacon, onions, mozzarella, and cheddar, with a bit of Burger Sauce on the side. So, there’s no traditional bun – but hey, it’s Pizza Hut, what did you expect? (Can I get one of those things…as a pizza topping?)
❑ The classic can of Pringles chips is one of the most recognizable snack food packages out there. But if the thought of getting your hand stuck in one of them keeps you up at night, the mustachioed mascot has good news. Pringles is ditching its iconic can for the first time in over 15 years (since the introduction of Mini Pringles), to launch a new bagged snack. “Pringles Mingles” are Pringles’ first-ever puffed snacks (think Cheetos). The new corn-based puff still boasts the same flavors as Pringles chips, but each bag combines 2 popular flavors into one puffy snack: Dill Pickle & Ranch, Cheddar & Sour Cream, and Sharp White Cheddar & Ranch. And in keeping with the brand’s theme, each puff is shaped…like a bowtie. (I guess they finally realized that when it comes to Pringles, there’s absolutely no need for a resealable package!)

APOSTROPHE CATASTROPHE:
The council of a county in England, has decided to remove apostrophes from street signs. Why? According to the North Yorkshire officials, punctuation marks have the potential of causing confusion in computer databases. Moving forward, the plan is for all new street signs to be produced without apostrophes, regardless of whether they were used in the past. As an example, picture “St. Mary’s” without the possessive punctuation. And some residents aren’t too happy about the change. Grammar purists say they see it as a ‘sign’ (pardon the pun!) of falling standards. What’s more, some locals have even gone as far as to “grammar-graffiti” the apostrophes back onto the signs.
(I never took “grammar purists” to be the type to vandalize street signs!)
(You know what? It makes me sick when people don’t add an apostrophe. In fact, I’ll LITERALLY be “ill”! Sorry…)

2024 SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS:
Here are the movies coming to theaters this summer that are vying to be “THE” blockbuster of the year, à la “Jaws” or “E.T.” or “Independence Day”, etc…
✪ “IF” (May 17): Short for “Imaginary Friend”, director John Krasinski’s kid-friendly fantasy suggests that these pals don’t go away once their underage creators grow up. Starring Ryan Reynolds and the voices of, among others, Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller-Bridges, and Sam Rockwell.
✪ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24): An origin story prequel, telling how ‘Imperator Furiosa’ became the rebel in George Miller’s post-apocalyptic franchise. Anya Taylor-Joy takes over that role, and Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke co-star.
✪ “Ballerina” (June 7): This “John Wick” spinoff is about a dancer-assassin named ‘Rooney’ (Ana de Armas) seeking vengeance for the murder of her family. We understand that Keanu Reeves will be showing up as everyone’s favorite killer on the run.
✪ “Bad Boys 4” (June 14): Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunite one more time as Detectives ‘Mike Lowery’ and ‘Marcus Burnett’, the loose cannons of Miami’s police department.
✪ “Inside Out 2” (June 14): ‘Joy’ (Amy Poehler) is now a young woman, dealing with a host of new emotions, including ‘Anxiety’ (voiced by Maya Hawke).
✪ “The Bikeriders” (June 21): This tale of a Chicago motorcycle gang in the late 1960s is being called “the Godfather of biker movies”. Starring Tom Hardy and Austin Butler, plus Michael Shannon and Norman Reedus.
✪ “Horizon” (June 28 & Aug. 16):  Fresh off his 5-season run on “Yellowstone”, Kevin Costner steps behind the camera for this two-part Western, subtitled “An American Saga”. Among those joining Costner in the cast: Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, and Jena Malone.
✪ “A Quiet Place: Day One” (June 28): This prequel to John Krasinski’s postapocalyptic-thriller series plays out the immediate aftermath of those creepy-crawly space bugs taking over our planet. Lupita Nyong’o and Alex Wolff are aboard this time.
✪ “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” (July 3): Eddie Murphy is back as Detroit’s finest streetwise detective. ‘Axel Foley’ returns to that ritzy L.A. neighborhood, investigating the death of an old friend. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, and Kevin Bacon join a host of familiar franchise faces.
✪ “Twisters” (July 9): The belated sequel to the 1996 disaster movie, with a whole new group of tornado chasers, including Glenn Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane.
✪ “Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26): Yup, this is the movie that will integrate Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool’ into the MCU. And, of course, Hugh Jackman is back as ‘Wolverine’. Plus, Jennifer Garner will apparently be reprising her role as ‘Elektra’.
(As for scheduled releases in August? You don’t wanna know…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Does a full moon really cause people to act strangely? No, according to a 2019 study by New York University. Researchers collaborated with the Vallejo, California police department to determine if “The lunar effect” is real. They found no significant uptick in reported crimes or arrests during nights when the moon is full. When other police departments heard about the study, they wanted an investigation of their own data. Similar sets of research with the Barrie, Ontario Police Force in Canada and the Irapuato Citizen Safety Secretariat in Mexico also showed no uptick in crime during full moon events. (Maybe because, during a full moon, people are better at getting away with acting weird!)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Biographers Day”, a day to start reading or writing a biography. What would you call yours?
• “Love a Tree Day”, a great day for tree-huggers everywhere. Trees are a good thing. They give us shade, comfort and shelter. They give off oxygen, too.
• “Mimosa Day”, celebrating the cocktail traditionally made with equal parts chilled orange juice and champagne, and served in a champagne flute. It was originally created in 1925 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris.
• “Piercing Day”, a ‘Hole-y Holiday’ celebrating the practice of puncturing or cutting a part of the human body to create an opening in which jewelry can be worn. (You need another piercing like you need another hole in your head!)
• “International Day of Light”, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist/engineer Theodore Maiman. The day celebrates the role light plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development. This year’s theme: “Light in our Lives”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mukux4h7
• “Wear Something Purple for Peace Day”, the first ‘intergalactic holiday’, as declared by a group called ‘The Moderns’, whose goal is to make the world a peaceful place and thereby encourage alien species to make contact.

• Brown Bag it Thursday”. You guessed it: Celebrate by bringing a brown bag lunch to school or work. It doesn’t need to be as boring as a peanut butter sandwich and carrots — there are many healthy sandwiches and salads you could make and pack in your brown paper bag. (Any good ideas?)
