It’s official: Paula Abdul has finally signed on to be a judge on Simon Cowell’s US version of “The X Factor” (can we stop talking about this show now?) . . . 27-year-old actress Olivia Wilde (“Tron Legacy”) tells “GQ” magazine she’s taken more seriously now that she’s a brunette, adding that people used to be shocked she wasn’t stupid when she was a natural blonde (uh, jury’s still out) . . . 48-year-old actor/director Jodie Foster has put her 7-bedroom, 8-bathroom Beverly Hills CA compound up for sale at just under $10 million, a half-million-dollar loss from the 2005 purchase price (maybe she expected “The Beaver” to flop?) . . . And “CSI” star Marg Helgenberger tells a French radio show that pop star Justin Bieber was ‘kind of a brat’ during his 2 guest appearances on the series (known in France as “Les Experts”) and she wasn’t impressed with his work as he’d never acted before (look out lady, you’re about to be hit with the online wrath of a bazillion ‘Beliebers’!).

• Jennifer Lopez – Turns out her ‘live’ singing performance on “American Idol” was not so live after all. (That actually happens more often than you might think.)
• Matthew Morrison – Today the 32-year-old “Glee” star (‘Will Schuester’) releases his self-titled debut album, which he says reflects his ‘eclectic music taste’. It includes collaborations with Elton John, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sting.
• Sheryl Crow – She tells “Prevention” magazine she’s keeping her budding romance with musician Doyle Bramhall II low-key because she doesn’t want her kids to be upset if they split.
• Spice Girls – A planned stage musical featuring their hits, “Viva Forever”, is being delayed so it can be perfected before opening in London’s West End. It’s now likely to debut in December. The group is involved in the production but will not perform.
• Stevie Nicks – She tells CNN she hasn’t changed her mind about Lindsay Lohan portraying her in a bio-film. That’s never going to happen, Nicks says, unless Lohan cleans up her life. (What’s that old adage about the pot dissing the kettle?)
• System Of a Down – Tonight in Edmonton AB the reunited rock band kicks off a handful of North American tour dates before heading to Europe for a Summer tour. Opening act is Gogol Bordello.

THE POWER OF HOT AIR:
Phone battery dead? Yell at it! That could be the solution if South Korean scientists perfect a new technology that turns sound into electricity. That would allow a phone to recharge even while a conversation is in progress. The technology could also be used to power MP3 players, raising the possibility of charging an iPod by simply singing along to your favorite songs. The greater the volume, the greater the charge. (This could go down as one of the most irritating inventions in history!)

FAT OWLS & SKINNY BIRDS:
‘Night owls’ who go to bed late and sleep in tend to eat more calories in the evening, more fast food and full-calorie soda, and fewer fruits and vegetables than ‘early bird’ people who are early to bed and early to rise,  according to a Northwestern University study. A calorie that’s consumed at 11 pm isn’t any different than one that’s consumed at 11 am, as long as activity offsets the weight gain. The new study indicates sleep and meal timing may be more important than previously thought. (You don’t see a lot of joggers at 2 am.)

A new study of DNA suggests North America was originally populated by just a few dozen people who crossed the temporary Bering land bridge connecting what is now Siberia and Alaska. That occurred during the Ice Age about 14,000 years ago. According to a DNA expert, Rutgers University genetics professor Jody Hey, the size of the founding population for the ‘New World’ was only about 70 people. The Caribbean may have sandy white beaches, but tropical temperatures can’t compare to the cold when it comes to contentment. Turns out, people in colder climates tend to be happier, according to the World Database of Happiness. In his book “The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search For the Happiest Places In the World”, author Eric Weiner suggests one reason may be that in colder places everyone must work together to survive, and that gives way to something powerful and lasting … love. WHEN TO WRITE A THANK-YOU:
This week is “Etiquette Week”. Etiquette experts universally lament that ‘thank-you notes’ are on the endangered-habits list. A few guidelines on the subject …
• You should write a thank-you note within a day or two of receiving a gift.
• After your wedding, you have 6 weeks to send thank-yous but sooner is always better.
• It’s a habit best started when you’re young, so see to it that your kids write thank-yous for gifts.
• Steer clear of pre-written thank-you cards. They don’t really convey much appreciation.
• After dinner in someone’s home, it’s proper to thank your host with a call the next day, followed by a quick thank-you note.
• Always send thank-you notes to potential employers after an interview, thanking them for their time and interest.
