Bullseye!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
✳ 56-year-old Peter Robbins, the former child actor who was the voice of ‘Charlie Brown’ in the 1960s “Peanuts” animated TV specials has been sentenced to drug rehab and a year in jail by a San Diego CA court. Robbins pleaded guilty last month to 2 felony counts of stalking and making criminal threats against his former girlfriend. His judgment was affected by alcohol and drug addiction at the time, according to a probation report. After the sentencing, the judge further advised Robbins: “Don’t be a blockhead!” (Everyone’s a comedian.)
– Reuters.com
✳ Rapper-turned-reggae artist Snoop (Dogg) Lion claims he was a for-real pimp for high-profile athletes and fellow celebs a decade ago when he hit the road on the “Playboy Tour”. He says he had a bus with 10 women follow him around, and when players showed up to hang out, they could pick and choose whichever they wanted. And Snoop further claims his ladies became rich because he gave them all the cash they earned. Quote: “It was never about the money; it was about the fascination of being a pimp.” (How endearing.)
– RollingStone.com
✳ We’ve heard of bizarre tour riders before, but Beyonce’s backstage demands on her “Mrs Carter World Tour” takes them to a whole new level. Just some of the outlandish items she requires include: almonds, oatcakes, and raw vegetables (green only) on glass platters; $900-worth of titanium drinking straws; special alkaline water served at exactly 21C/69 F; 100% pure cotton clothing on all crew members; brand new toilet seats; and red toilet paper only. (Mariah Carey’s all-time diva rep may be in jeopardy!)
– DailyStar.co.uk
✳ Celeb couple Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev have split up after 3 years. The “Vampire Diaries” co-stars, who play ‘Elena Gilbert’ and ‘Damon Salvatore’ on the program, have decided to end their relationship but are vowing to not let that affect their work on the supernatural drama. A rep says they are ‘consummate professionals’ who will continue to ‘work together and remain best friends’. (BS translation: They will never again share a camera shot.)
– UsMagazine.com
✳ And Gwyneth Paltrow says this week’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala (aka the ‘Met Ball’) simply wasn’t her idea of a good time. A host of A-list stars attended the high-profile affair but Paltrow is quoted as saying a few days after: “I’m never going again. It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.” (We’re sure this sour review has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact she ended up on critics’ worst dressed lists.)

ORIGINS OF BODY PART NAMES:
Some quick explanations on how various parts of our anatomy got their labels …
• Calf – Nothing to do with a baby cow. The bovine word is from Old English, the anatomical term comes from the Old Norse word kálfi.
• Elbow – The el- part comes from the Old English ‘eln’, meaning arm or forearm. The –bow part has to do with bending, as in rain-bow or cross-bow.
• Index Finger – Opposite to what you might think, the earliest meaning of ‘index’ was ‘forefinger’. The use of the word to mean an alphabetical listing came a couple centuries later.
• Iris – The colorful ring-shaped membrane of the eye and the flower both take their name from Iris, the goddess of the rainbow in Greek mythology.
• Palm – In ancient Rome, it was customary to place a palm leaf in the hands of the victor in a contest. The Latin word ‘palma’,  meaning palm of the hand, became associated with the tree.
• Pupil – From the Latin ‘pupilla’, meaning ‘doll’. Lexicographers claim the name stuck because that’s the small, reflected image you see when looking into someone’s pupil.
• Sole – The fishy ‘sole’ and the fleshy ‘sole’ are related. The word entered Middle English via Old French. The fish is named for its shape … like the bottom of a foot.

ARE THE ROBOT OVERLORDS WINNING?
The idea of super-intelligent machines may sound like the plot of “The Terminator” or “The Matrix”, but many experts say what’s called ‘singularity’ – the point at which artificial intelligence can match and/or overtake human smarts – may happen in just 16 years. Others think we are already in the midst of it, pointing out that we’ve already relinquished many intelligent tasks, such as the ability to write, navigate, memorize facts, and do calculations.

OLDEST WORDS:
Research published this week in the “Proceedings Of the National Academy of Sciences” suggests 23 words seem to go back 15,000 years to the time of hunter-gatherers in Asia. Many of them have descended largely unchanged from their original languages. Among them …
✓ Ashes
✓ Black
✓ Fire
✓ Give
✓ Hear
✓ Me
✓ Old
✓ Spit
✓ Worm
✓ You
(Oh, and this one that we’ll be using so often this weekend … ‘Mother’.)

BS AMAZING FACT:
On a normal weeknight, Netflix accounts for almost a third of all Internet traffic entering North American homes. That’s more than YouTube, Hulu, Amazon.com, HBO Go, iTunes, and BitTorrent combined.
