BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The BBC has offered an unconditional apology after a report found prominent journalist Martin Bashir used “deceitful” methods to secure a landmark interview with Princess Diana. Director-General Tim Davie said Thursday that the career-defining interview Bashir conducted with Diana in 1995, in which she detailed her breakdown of her relationship with Prince Charles, “fell far short of what audiences have a right to expect.” The report found that Bashir had shown fake bank statements to Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, which “deceived and induced him to arrange a meeting with Princess Diana.” The report also notes that “By gaining access to Princess Diana in this way, Mr. Bashir was able to persuade her to agree to give the interview,” and added that this behavior was in breach of BBC guidelines.

★ The trailer for the long-awaited “Friends” reunion is here, and it’s bringing back all the ’90s feels. In the special, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer take an interactive trip down memory lane, including a recreation of the gang’s infamous trivia game. And yep, Monica is still really, really competitive. In the trailer, LeBlanc reveals that Cox used to write her lines on the kitchen table, and weighs in on whether Ross and Rachel were really “on a break”. “Friends: The Reunion” streams May 27 on HBO Max. ★ Leonardo DiCaprio is putting his money where his heart lies. He has announced a partnership with the new conservation group Re:wild, along with a $43-million commitment, to help “rewild the Galápagos.” DiCaprio wrote on social media: “The wild is in decline. We have degraded three quarters of all wild places and pushed more than 1 million species to the brink of extinction. More than half of Earth’s remaining wild areas could disappear in the next few decades if we don’t decisively act.” The Galápagos Islands are home to numerous species of wildlife, including birds documented by Charles Darwin.

★ Harry Potter fans can now own some serious wizardry memorabilia. Prop Store will hold one of the world’s largest live auctions of film and TV memorabilia in L.A., and leading the way are the glasses and wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in the 2010 and 2011 films “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. He used the wand in Part 1 and the glasses in Part 2. But whoever wants to cop them will need more than wizard currency. It’s estimated that each of the items will go for between $30k and $50k.

SHOOTING THE BULL

EYE TECH:
⇒ Thanks to a new invention called the “Third Eye”, you may some day be able to text or browse Instagram as you walk, without the fear of falling into a fountain, and becoming the star a viral video. Industrial design student Minwook Paeng has created a high-tech device that can be affixed to a person’s forehead to look out for obstacles as they walk, while their real eyes are glued to their smartphone. The Third Eye consists of a translucent plastic case that sticks to the wearer’s forehead with a gel pad. Inside the plastic eye are a small speaker, a gyroscopic sensor and a sonar sensor. When the gyroscope detects the user’s head is angled down, it opens the eye’s plastic eyelid and the sonar monitors the area in front of the user. When it detects an obstacle, it warns the wearer via the connected speaker. (If she comes up with a drivers’ version of this, I’m turning in my licence!)
⇒ A new invention from Ford could have roadside billboards beaming back personalized ads onto car dashboard screens. According to a patent published on May 6, Ford wants to add a sensor capable of reading billboard interfaces and sending that data to a car’s dashboard for the purpose of displaying ads. In the patent, Ford gives the example of an advertisement for a hot dog stand. The new technology could send the hot dog stand’s telephone number, address – and maybe a special offer or coupon – to the car’s dashboard. It’s unclear if, and when, Ford plans to put the patent into use, or what kind of safety measures also would be included.  (You mean napkins…and antacid?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A university student has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison for taking advantage of an ordering loophole, and swindling KFC out of about $31,000 in fast food. The 23-year-old, with the surname Xu, discovered the glitch in 2018, and not only used it to his benefit for the next 6 months, but he also shared it with friends and even profited from it. The Jiangsu, China-based student accidentally realized that he could order free food by paying for it using coupons in the official KFC app, and then immediately asking for a refund of the coupons using the company’s WeChat account, resulting in all the fried chicken he could eat, totally free. He started reselling the coupons online for profit, and shared the app flaws with 4 of his university colleagues. No word on how he and his friends were caught, but they’ve all been sentenced to prison time, and have been given fines by the bucketful. (“Hmmm…I wonder if I have a coupon for that…”)
➢ A man who turned himself in for a New Hampshire gender reveal party that triggered an explosion has been charged with disorderly conduct. Police say Anthony Spinelli bought and detonated around 80 pounds of the explosive Tannerite at the party. The explosion took place in April, in a quarry, and triggered tremors that some neighbors believed came from an earthquake. Spinelli was charged with disorderly conduct “due to the fact that he caused public alarm.” Tannerite is a target used for firearms practice that also comes in a ‘gender-reveal’ variety. (Did it happen to have the word “Acme” on the box? Asking for a friend…who happens to be a coyote…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Mattel has unveiled its new “Helen Keller” doll – the newest addition to Barbie’s ‘Inspiring Women’ series. The company teamed up with the National Federation of the Blind to ensure that the doll and its surroundings are not only authentic, but accessible to the blind/low-vision community. There is braille on the packaging and on a book accessory held by the doll. Keller, who notably did not let being both deaf and blind keep her from learning to communicate, joins a lineup of other inspiring women in the series including Dr. Maya Angelou, Billie Jean King, Ella Fitzgerald, Florence Nightingale, Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks and Sally Ride.
