BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Heath Freeman, who made appearances on several 2000s era dramas like “Bones” and “NCIS,” has died, according to his manager. He was 41. Freeman landed his first TV role in 2001 for the medical drama “ER.” On the Fox crime drama “Bones,” Freeman played one of the series’ reoccurring serial killers, ‘Howard Epps’. He also appeared on “The Closer”, “Without a Trace”, and “Raising the Bar”. There were no further details given about his cause of death.

★ Shia LaBeouf and Mia Goth are reportedly set to become first-time parents. The on-off couple was spotted on Saturday and, in pictures, the actress’ growing baby bump was clearly visible beneath her green vest top. LaBeouf and Goth were married in Las Vegas in 2016, but both filed for divorce in 2018. Then, late last year, they appeared to have reconciled and have recently been wearing their wedding rings again, so it is unclear if they ever finalized their separation.

★ Mel Gibson will direct and star in “Lethal Weapon 5”. He plays ‘Martin Riggs’ in the big screen franchise, and announced his involvement in the latest project at an event in London on Saturday night after paying tribute to Richard Donner, the filmmaker who previously helmed the franchise. According to Gibson, Donner him his blessing to step behind the camera for the next installment of the series before he passed away. No word yet on whether Danny Glover will reprise his role of ‘Roger Murtaugh’. The film is expected to enter production sometime in 2022.

★ Peacock has ordered a docuseries about ‘Barney the Dinosaur’, the iconic purple star of “Barney & Friends” that many a ’90s kid loved — and many others loved to hate. The currently untitled 3-part doc has begun production and is set to debut in 2022. According to Peacock, it “examines the rock star-like trajectory of Barney the Dinosaur, the beloved character who captured the hearts of millions of children and then became the target of hate and rage across pop culture, the early internet and playgrounds around the world”.

It will launch exactly one year to the day after he was suspended by his label Big Loud and his music was pulled from radio and streaming playlists. That occurred after TMZ posted a video of Wallen using a racial slur outside his Nashville home.

SHOOTING THE BULL

GOOD FIBES:
What are the most important considerations when it comes to buying a home? I mean besides price? According to a survey of real estate agents, a fast internet connection is now one of the most important factors for homebuyers. Questions about internet connectivity, usually “full fiber” broadband, are up 69% since the pandemic began. The research, by Omdia for Huawei, found that speeds of more than 300Mbps are sought by 34% of buyers, and that can add US $6,700 to the sale price of a home. 23% of potential home buyers figure they need 1Gbps. In order, here are the most important factors for homebuyers, according to the poll of 300 UK real estate agents:
• 23% said the size of the property
• 20% said broadband quality
• 18% said the number of bedrooms
• 10% said the age of the property
• 9% said transport links
(For me, the most important factor is definitely location. As in, the house is nowhere near my mother-in-law!)
(I’m surprised they could get any answers from real estate agents these days. I figured they’d be too busy laughing all the way to the bank!)
(I thought internet connection was the most important thing, too, until I bought a semi-detached haunted house sitting on a sinkhole in the middle of a smelting yard, with asbestos pipes and an inefficient A/C!)

A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME:
☞ Birds’ bodies are shrinking in response to climate change, even in places like the Amazon rainforest that are relatively untouched by human hands. Researchers studied information on more than 15,000 non-migratory birds spanning 77 species, and found that nearly all of the birds’ bodies have become lighter since the 1980s, losing on average about 2% of their body weight every decade. The study, published in Science Advances, also revealed that wingspan increased in a third of the species studied. The change in climate may have made food or other resources scarcer, and as a response, lower body weight and increasing wing length allows the birds to use energy more efficiently. (How is it that birds can lose weight at will, but I can’t?)
☞ Climate change could bring the curtain down on spectacular bird migrations, according to new research. Scientists at Durham University say that many common European birds, including Nightingales and Willow Warblers, are already spending up to 2 months longer in winter breeding grounds, and may eventually remain for good. Scientists say the changes in migratory habits we are already seeing could lead to longer breeding seasons for these species, and that could have the effect of increased competition for autumn/winter food and resources for resident bird species that do not migrate. Plus, in traditional warm weather migration destinations, a reduction in the time migratory birds spend there could have implications such as reduced insect consumption, seed dispersal, and pollination. (Cleaner windshields, though!)

WINNING BET:
A US Insurance company is looking for Betty White fans for a new contest – and let’s face it, pretty much everyone is a Betty White fan. Choice Mutual will pay one lucky winner $1,000 for watching 10 hours of Betty White’s best work over the years. It’s all to celebrate her 100th birthday, which will be January 17th (we hope!). On its website, the company says: “We’re looking for someone who adores Betty White. This candidate is probably already planning to binge 10 hours of her classics, but now they get paid to do it!” The winner is required to watch all 10 hours in a 24-hour period, and document the experience on social media. To apply, candidates have to explain their favorite Betty White role and their favorite things about her. There are, of course, a lot of Betty White performances to choose from. The 5-time Emmy-winner’s career spans more than 8 decades, from her 1949 role as co-host on “Hollywood on Television” to playing ‘Elka Ostrovosky’ on “Hot in Cleveland” from 2010-2015. Also included in the prize is a DVD player and Betty White DVDs.
(Wow! She turns 100 in January? To put that in perspective, when she was growing up there was no TV, no microwave, and people still used MySpace!)
(I watched 10 hours of “Golden Girls” once. Betty has aged a lot better than that show has!)

DUMB THINGS THAT WE BELIEVED AS KIDS…BECAUSE, WELL….WE WERE DUMB:
✗ That if you eat a watermelon seed, a watermelon will grow in your stomach.
✗ That it is illegal to turn on the interior light of a car while it was moving.
✗ That teachers had no personal lives and probably lived at the school.
✗ That white cows made white milk and brown cows made chocolate milk.
✗ That you could accidentally encounter quicksand anywhere, at any time.
✗ That all dogs are male and all cats are female.
✗ That Mom had eyes on the back of her head, just like she said.
✗ That if you cross your eyes, they might stay that way (Thanks again, Mom!).
✗ The blue part of the eraser could erase ink.
✗ That the ‘coin return’ button on a vending machine or video game might actually work.
(I’m still trying to accept the fact that everything wasn’t in black and white before the 70s!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A royal chef is serving up secrets about cooking for Queen Elizabeth. Graham Tinsley, who has prepared food for the Queen on multiple occasions, says he was required to X-ray Her Majesty’s meals before they were served to her at state dinners. He says security was super tight when the Queen came to dine with heads of state. How tight? All the catering staff would have to meet at a police station and get a motorcycle ride [to the castle]. And staff were required to put all food, containers, knives and kitchen equipment through an X-ray machine, just in case. Tinsley said that some banquets even have code names to protect their security.
