BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The producers behind the recent unauthorized “OC” musical are now developing a stage show based on the 2006-11 TV show “Friday Night Lights”. The aptly named “Unauthorized Friday Night Lights Musical”, which will be staged next year in Los Angeles, will feature original songs. Scott Porter, who starred as ‘Jason Street’ on the TV series, has been cast as ‘Coach Taylor’, who was played by Kyle Chandler. It is unclear if any other former cast members will be appearing in the production.

★ Kevin Bacon is reprising his role from the monster film “Tremors” in a new TV reboot. The Hollywood actor starred in the 1990 feature film about giant killer worms alongside Reba McEntire, and now he’s taking on the role of handyman ‘Valentine McKee’ again for an upcoming TV version. Bacon will also executive produce the show, along with horror filmmaker Jason Blum. “Tremors” only grossed $16.6 million at the box office but later became a cult hit when released on home video.

★ 52-year-old actor John Stamos has been sentenced to 3 years of probation after pleading no contest to DUI in an incident earlier this year. A judge has also ordered him to attend 52 AA meetings and a counseling session as part of his sentence in the misdemeanor case. The actor was briefly hospitalized in June after Beverly Hills CA cops arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of an unspecified drug. The actor currently appears on the FOX-TV sitcom “Grandfathered” and he is working on a reboot of “Full House” for Netflix.

★ And actress Kaley Cuoco is seemingly moving forward after her split from tennis player Ryan Sweeting by removing her wedding date tattoo. “The Big Bang Theory” star filed for divorce from Sweeting in September after less than 2 years of marriage. Cuoco says she’s staying strong and has opted to replace a tattoo symbol of matrimony that she now regrets – the date of her planned wedding – with what appears to be a moth with its wings outstretched. Or maybe that’s a Rorschach Test ink blot?

• “Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Concert” (PBS) – Folk singer Arlo Guthrie celebrates the 50th anniversary of his quirky song “Alice’s Restaurant”.
• ARIA Awards (Sydney, Australia) – The annual honors from the Australian Record Industry Association. Singer-songwriter Sia and boy-band 5 Seconds Of Summer are among the top nominees. Also on the list: AC/DC, Tame Impala, and Vance Joy.
• “Christmas Through the Decades” (History) – Debut of a new 4-part series that focuses on how classic films, fads, TV specials, songs, and toys became part of the modern holiday tradition. First up is a look back at the 1960s.
• “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC/CityTV) – Rerun of a ‘Mash-Up Monday’ episode with ‘Joss Stone Temple Pilots’.
• “Last Call With Carson Daly” (NBC) –  Houndmouth (“Little Neon Limelight”). Rerun.
• “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” (NBC) – Over 3.5 million spectators are expected in Manhattan for the 89th annual parade, with an audience of more than 50 million watching from home. Performers include Jake Owen, Jennifer Nettles, Jordin Sparks, Mariah Carey, Panic! At the Disco, Pat Benatar, Plain White T’s, Shawn Mendes, Train, and Trey Songz.
• “Tavis Smiley” (PBS) – Jewel (“Picking Up the Pieces”).
• “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (NBC/CTV2) – Kool Keith (“A Couple of Slices”).

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Adele – New figures from Britain’s Companies House show that her company Melted Stone earned around $27 million last year … even though she didn’t perform or release any new music. That’s mostly thanks to royalties from her previous album “21” and her 2008 debut “19”.
• Amy Winehouse – Asif Kapadia’s documentary “Amy” has been nominated for a Producers Guild of America Award. The film features previously unseen footage of Winehouse, who died from alcohol poisoning in 2011. It broke box office records for a Brit documentary. The PGAs will be announced January 23rd at a gala in Los Angeles.
• Chris Young – His “I’m Comin’ Over” has debuted at #1 this week on the ‘Billboard County Albums’ chart, while his single of that title spends its 2nd week at the top of the ‘Country Airplay’ ranking.
• Hinder – The rockers are heading back out on the road after a bus crash derailed their tour last week. The traffic accident in Tennessee left bass player Mike Rodden with broken ribs and put 2 roadies in hospital. The band has now rescheduled their dates for January.
• Lady Gaga – She’s taking over fashion publication “V” magazine’s January issue as both cover girl and guest editor. She’s already recruited top photographers Nick Knight, Steven Klein, and Inez & Vinoodh to shoot features for the mag.

COMING ATTRACTIONS:
A BS selection of movies in the making …
• “A Meyers Christmas” – This holiday film centers around an estranged family that is forced to come together for their first Christmas since the death of the family matriarch. The ensemble cast includes Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union, Mo’Nique, and Jessie T Usher. The seasonal feature is set to soon begin production with an eye to a November 2016 release.
• “Battle Of the Sexes” – Emma Stone has signed back on to play tennis icon Billie Jean King after bowing out of the role earlier this year. Steve Carell has been cast to play self-promoting tennis player Bobby Riggs in this film about the much-hyped match between the two that created headlines in 1973. The project is slated to start filming early next year.
• “Baywatch” – Alexandra Daddario has won the coveted female lead in the bigscreen adaptation of the popular 1989-2001 TV series. She’ll play ‘Summer’, a love interest for Zac Efron’s character. Daddario’s “San Andreas” co-star Dwayne Johnson has the male lead in the movie. The R-rated film will start shooting early next year for a 2017 opening.
• “The Chronicles of Riddick: Furia” – Vin Diesel is working on expanding his ‘Riddick’ franchise with both a new movie and a spin-off TV series. Work on the script for the 4th film in the series, “Furia”, begins next month. And Diesel says he’s also developing his own ‘Riddick’ project for TV called “Merc City” through a new department at his production company.
• “Evel Knievel On Tour” – Legendary director Martin Scorsese is being sought to helm this bio-pic about late stunt driver Evel Knievel. The movie is being adapted from Sheldon Saltmann’s 1977 book, which upset the daredevil so much upon its release that he attacked the author with a baseball bat, fracturing his arm. Knievel died in 2007, shortly after filing for bankruptcy.

Brit physician Ali Parsa believes the smartphone can become the most important piece of medical equipment around and wants to use it to change the face of healthcare. His new app, Babylon Health, promises to have a qualified doctor respond to any question you ask within minutes. For a monthly subscription of about $7.50, customers get unlimited medical consultations by text and video. After an online exchange, doctors can send a prescription to the nearest pharmacy and arrange for a follow-up consultation. 250,000 people are already using the app in the UK and Ireland, either as direct subscribers or through private medical insurance. Parsa claims the app can deliver 95% of your healthcare over your phone. (But if there are no more waiting rooms, what will we do with all the used magazines?)

SCIENCE BEHIND SOME POPULAR PHRASES:
• ‘Raining Cats & Dogs’ – In 17th century England it was common to discard waste in the street … even dead household pets. Once it rained so much that the deceased critters became buoyant and floated along the gutters, inspiring writer Richard Brome in 1651 to predict, “It shall rain dogs and polecats.”
• ‘Never Look a Gift Horse In the Mouth’ – In other words, don’t be ungrateful when someone gives you something. You can tell a horse’s age by looking at its teeth, particularly the incisors, but if someone gave you a horse as a gift, it would be considered rude to examine its teeth.
• ‘The Acid Test’ – Gold Rush miners tested possible gold nuggets in acid. Unlike other metals, gold won’t corrode in acid, so if the nugget didn’t dissolve it passed the acid test and therefore was deemed pure gold. If a person passes a figurative acid test, they’re telling the truth.
• ‘In the Limelight’ – Theater stages used to be illuminated by heating lime (calcium oxide) until it glowed. It has a high melting point and, when heated, gives off a brilliant white light which was then focused into a spotlight. So if an actor was in the limelight, he was certainly the center of attention. A team of students in Dundee, Scotland has designed a handbag to stop you from spending money. The prototype purse has been created for a 4th-year degree project at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. Opening it up triggers automatic recordings that are played through embedded speakers. The messages, in a tough-sounding male voice, urge would-be spenders to think again before splashing the cash, saying things like: “Don’t even think about it!” and “Put it down, put it back!”. (Next … talking underwear?)
