BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Elon Musk is officially Twitter’s new owner — at least according to Elon Musk — who says he hopes the platform will continue to be a digital town square for years to come. The Tesla/SpaceX boss explained his reasons for the $44 billion purchase Thursday, saying, “There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide in our society.” He claims the reason he bought the social media site is to preserve the opportunity for dialogue that traditional media doesn’t provide. Quote: “I didn’t do it because it would be easy. I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love.” Musk’s Twitter bio now reflects his new purchase as well, referring to him as the “Chief Twit.”

★ Matthew Perry has apologized for questioning in his new memoir why Keanu Reeves “walks among us.” In a statement issued on Wednesday, the “Friends” star said: “I’m actually a big fan of Keanu. I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead.” Perry suggests in “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing” that he harbors bitter feelings toward Reeves, but never provides a reason why. He writes: “Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?” He cites Reeves again while discussing the 1997 death of his pal Chris Farley, writing: “I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out. (Yet) Keanu Reeves walks among us.”

★ Prince Harry’s much-anticipated memoir officially has a title, a cover and a release date. Thursday, Penguin Random House revealed information about the upcoming book, confirming reports of its Jan. 10 release date. Titled “Spare”, the 416-page book will find Harry telling his story with “raw, unflinching honesty,” says the publisher, adding that the book is “full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.” The title is a reference to the old saying about the brutal nature of the royal system, which will one day see his brother William made king, and it is best to have two sons, “an heir and a spare.” Harry has often accused his family of emotionally neglecting him, and the title seems likely to prompt speculation the book will detail his perceived treatment at their hands.

★ Really? Another baby for Nick Cannon? “The Masked Singer” host will become a father for the 12th time. Alyssa Scott has announced that she’s pregnant with their second child. Her and Cannon’s son Zen died in 2021 at 5 months old after a battle with a rare form of brain cancer. Scott made the announcement of her pregnancy in an Instagram photo of her baby bump while holding her daughter, Zeela (from a previous relationship), in matching blue ensembles, seemingly hinting she’s having a boy. She captioned the pic: “With you by my side…” Entertainment Tonight says it has confirmed Cannon is the father. He has 10 other children with 5 other women, and another baby on the way.

The film opens Nov. 11. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/52chss9v
• Kanye West — Spotify CEO Daniel Ek says his anti-Semitic posts are “just awful”, but has no plans to pull his music from the streaming giant. Ek said it would only be an issue if Ye’s comments were broadcast on Spotify, such as in a podcast, or if his label requested the music be pulled.
• Avril Lavigne – has dropped out of the Saturday lineup of Las Vegas’ “When We Were Young” festival, and has been replaced by Death Cab for Cutie, due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Saturday’s show is technically the second day of WWWY, since organizers were forced to cancel last weekend’s opening day due to concerns over high winds.
• Green Day, Eddie Vedder, Weezer, Marcus Mumford, and The Black Crowes – have been lined up for Tempe, Arizona’s baseball-themed “Innings Festival”, set for Feb. 25-26, 2023, to coincide with MLB’s spring training. • Thomas Rhett – says his family really gets into Halloween. While he won’t reveal what his costume will be this year, he did say that wife Lauren Akins makes it her mission to ensure that their 4 daughters will be equally obsessed with the festive months as she is. Quote: “Halloween and Christmas and 4th of July are… I mean, she goes like a little bit overboard on everything…”
SHOOTING THE BULL
TODAY’S MOVIE OPENINGS:
• “Till: (PG-13, Drama): The true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett, who, in 1955, was brutally lynched while visiting cousins in Mississippi. (Danielle Deadwyler, Jalyn Hall, Whoopi Goldberg)

• “The Banshees of Inisherin” (R, Comedy-Drama, limited): On a remote island off Ireland, 2 lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them. (Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon)
COMPETITION DISPOSITION:
Does your child’s costume just HAVE to be the best on the block? If so, you’re just like the more than half of parents who admit they are competitive at Halloween – especially when it comes to fancy dress, baking and home décor. In a survey of 1,000 parents with children, 50% admitted they treat parenting like a competition, including sports day (34%), social media likes (26%) and bake sales (26%). As for Halloween, 54% feel the need to out-do others. How? By providing the best candy for trick or treaters (34%), or by hosting the best party (31%) and even creating the creepiest playlists (27%). 49% said they have become more competitive about Halloween since becoming a parent.
(In our house, the only competition revolves around who gets to the peanut butter cups first!)
(I cannot BELIEVE how petty some people can be. Except for that part about sports day. Then it’s GAME ON!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A Vancouver woman may have come up with the scariest Halloween display yet, Laryssa Gervan was inspired to do an inflation-themed house of horrors after thinking about what people are REALLY afraid of this year. Her experience in the film industry gave her the skills to assemble and rig the props for her “check-out counter from hell”. She used a Cricut machine to make the “Grave On Foods” sign, a pun on popular B.C. grocery store “Save On Foods”. The inflation installation also features 2 mannequins — one in chains pushing a cart, and the other on its knees carrying a bag of play money. One of the highlights of the display is a cash register showing the price ticking up and up, topping out at a terrifying $999.99 before glitching out and starting over. Last year, her display focused on COVID-19 vaccination fears, and in 2020, she set up a Halloween border wall inspired by Donald Trump. (In another sign of the times, her display is definitely the subject of “skyrocketing interest”!)
➢ An Iranian hermit who was unofficially dubbed the “world’s dirtiest man” after not showering for 60 years, has died at age 94. Amou Haji – not his real name, but an endearing nickname given to elderly people, was known for his grime-covered skin and matted hair. He abstained from washing because he believed soap and water would make him sick. He lived in isolation for most of his life in an open brick hut. In 2014, the Tehran Times reported that Haji also avoided fresh food, opting instead for rotted porcupine, and smoked a pipe of animal excrement. A few months ago, it was reported that “villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash.” It is unclear if the cleaning effort was successful. (The funny thing is that the entire meaning of “world’s dirtiest man” changes, if you just add the word “old” in there!)

DID YOU KNOW?
If you’re looking to survive a zombie apocalypse, your best bet is to flee to Florida. Inspired by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Zombie Preparedness guide (yes, it’s a thing!), researchers at Lawn Love analyzed 26 key factors that measure “zombie preparedness” across 200 US cities. Taking into account things like the number of local supermarkets and hunting supply stores, the number of people in poor health, and the number of basements or bunkers under local homes, Orlando, Florida was deemed the best city to be in to survive a zombie apocalypse. Tampa and Miami also finished in the top 10. The worst place to be? Sunrise Manor, Nevada. (Sunrise Manor has also been called the worst place to be WITHOUT a zombie apocalypse!)

BS CHRONOMETER 10.28.22
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Frankenstein Friday”, honoring Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein”, and the monster from her story. Frankenstein was first published anonymously in 1818, under its original title: “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus”. And, yes, there are also “Frankenstein Days” on Oct. 25, and on Shelley’s birthdate, Aug. 30. (“Freaky”, huh?)
• “International Animation Day”, first proclaimed in 2002 to celebrate the art of animation. (So, if you know an animator, send a .gif!)
• “Plush Animal Lover’s Day”, a day to celebrate your stuffed animal collection. ‘Plush’ sounds so much more humane, no?
• “Wild Foods Day”, a celebration of wild plants, fruits, and vegetables. Wild foods are free of preservatives and pesticides, and eating them is part of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Wild plants now often appear on menus in gourmet and raw food restaurants. (I wonder if tomorrow is “Roughage Day…”)
• “Bandanna Day”, a cancer fundraiser in Australia. It turns out some people spell it with a double-n near the end! LINK: https://www.bandannaday.org.au/
• “Statue of Liberty Dedication Day”, President Grover Cleveland dedicated it on this date in 1886. The 151-Ft. statue serves as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. A gift from the people of France, it sits on what is now known as Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
• “National Chocolate Day”, yes, there was also a “Chocolate Day” in July and an “International Chocolate Day in September…don’t fight it. Here are 5 things to know about chocolate:
➢ Switzerland is one of the top countries for chocolate consumption. The Swiss consume about 10 kg (22 lbs.) of chocolate, per person, per year.
➢ Most cocoa comes from West Africa.
➢ Cocoa beans were used as currency by the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Perhaps this is where they saying “Money grows on trees” came from.
➢ White chocolate originates from the cocoa (cacao) plant, but it is not ‘chocolate.’
➢ Allowing chocolate to melt in your mouth produces a similar reaction to that of a passionate kiss.
SATURDAY-
• “Hermit Day”, the perfect excuse to curl up with a good book and enjoy a day of peace and quiet.
• “Cat Day”, a day for cat fanatics to dote over their felines (As if they don’t the rest of the year…), and to raise public awareness of cat adoption.
• “Oatmeal Day”, a food celebration honoring the hot breakfast cereal that ‘sticks to your ribs’, as grandma used to say.
• “World Psoriasis Day”, to increase awareness of the life-long skin disorder. It’s estimated 125 million people worldwide suffer from the malady. LINK: https://ifpa-pso.com/world-psoriasis-day
• World Stroke Day”, when organizations around the world facilitate events emphasizing education, testing, and initiatives to improve the damaging effects of stroke. LINK: https://www.world-stroke.org/world-stroke-day-campaign
• “International Internet Day”, to commemorate the momentous day in history, which, to many, signifies the creation of the internet. This date in 1969, the first successful electronic message was sent. The letters ‘L’ and ‘O’ were transferred from one computer to another before the connection crashed. (The dude was typing “LOL”????)
SUNDAY-
• “Candy Corn Day”, celebrating the traditional Halloween candy that resembles corn kernels and can’t be resisted until you’ve finished off the entire 2-lb bag. About 9 billion pieces are manufactured each year. (What?? It’s not grown on a stalk like regular corn?)
• “Checklist Day”, to appreciate the value of lists, and the peace of mind they give by helping you stay organized. Too lazy to make your own? Here’s a website that does it for you …
LINK: http://checklists.com (We understand Santa Claus is a big proponent of making a list…and checking it twice!)
• “Create a Great Funeral Day”, whether you’re someone who likes to have things done your way, or if you simply don’t want to burden your loved ones with the task, pre-planning your funeral is a good idea. (Besides . . . doing it in advance is much more fun for you. Yup, THAT’S it . . . put the ‘fun’ back in ‘funerals’!)
• “Text Your Ex Day”, It’s possible that this event does not yet have the official UN seal of approval. Go ahead…give it a shot. What could possibly go wrong? (It’s always a good idea that your ex is aware they are your ex before observing this occasion…!)
• “Buy a Doughnut Day” … really, who buys just one? (The official dictionary spelling is “doughnut.” The simplified, Americanized spelling of “donut,” has been around since the late 19th century. It didn’t catch on, though, until late in the 20th century)
• “Sugar Addiction Awareness Day”, something to keep in mind on what is also ‘Candy Corn’ and ‘Buy a Doughnut Day’! And by Halloween night, ‘Sugar Addiction Awareness Day’ will be nothing but a faint, sugar crashed, foggy-brained memory…

✓ The word taxi is spelled the same in English, German, French, Swedish and Portuguese.
✓ The revenue generated from gambling is more than the combined revenue from movies, cruise ships, recorded music, theme parks, and spectator sports combined.
