BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Alan Kalter, the “voice” of CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” for most of its run, has died. He was 78. Kalter, nicknamed “Big Red” and “TV’s Uncle Jerry,” took over as Letterman’s announcer in 1995, and remained with “Late Show” until Letterman ended his tenure in 2015. Although the gig centered on announcing the guests at the top of each show and other introduction elements, Kalter soon became a pivotal part of “Late Show,” often in scripted segments in which he satirically flew off the handle and stormed off stage. He played himself as deviant and creepy, and often was the butt of jokes. He also did hundreds of voiceovers for radio and television commercials, and was the announcer for the game shows “To Tell the Truth,” “The $25,000 Pyramid,” “The Money Maze,” and “The $100,000 Question.”

★ Chadwick Boseman’s legacy at Howard University and his prospective impact on future generations continues to grow. Netflix has partnered with the university to establish a $5.4 million scholarship in the late actor’s name. The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will provide incoming students in the newly reestablished College of Fine Arts (which was named after Boseman in May) with a 4-year scholarship to cover the full cost of university tuition.

★ Billie Eilish has joined the cast of Disney’s live-to-film concert experience of Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. She’ll perform a rendition of ‘Sally’s Song’ in the show, which will feature a full orchestra led by acclaimed conductor John Mauceri. The 2-night event is set to will take place at Los Angeles’ Banc Of California Stadium on October 29 and 31.

★ Carole Baskin will be reluctantly tuning in to the forthcoming second season of “Tiger King”. The wildlife savior, who became a star thanks to Joe Exotic’s Netflix series, has lashed out at the Netflix show over her “villain edit”. Asked whether she’ll be watching the second season, Baskin answered: “I know I will have to (watch) because they told so many lies in Tiger King that I had to rebut – and I feel certain that they found that was a way to make a lot of money and they’ll probably do it again.” Season 2 debuts on Nov. 17.

• New Kids on the Block – will hit the road for an extensive arena tour in May 2022, and they’re bringing along Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Astley, and En Vogue. They have 55 US dates booked through July, plus a Toronto stop on June 22 at Scotiabank Arena.
• Christina Aguilera — performed at Disney World on Friday to kick off the parks’ 50th anniversary celebration, and the former Mouseketeer said it was “like coming home.”
• Rolling Stones — have released a cover of the Chi-Lites 1970 song ‘Troubles A’ Comin’. It’s one of 9 unreleased songs to appear on “Lost & Found”, the bonus disc featured on the 40th Anniversary reissue of the band’s “Tattoo You” album, out Oct. 22. LINK:  https://tinyurl.com/cecd9265
• Nirvana — Dave Grohl has some ideas to change the cover of the “Nevermind” album. The 1991 LP is a classic, but recently Spencer Elden, the child who appears in the artwork, sued over the nude image. Grohl quote: “I have many ideas of how we should alter that cover but we’ll see what happens…I’m sure we’ll come up with something good.”
• Luke Combs — heads to Wyoming to sharpen his skills as an outdoorsman on a new episode of “MeatEater”, a Netflix series hosted by hunting enthusiast and conservationist Steven Rinella. In a tweet last week, Combs confirmed his appearance on the show, and shared some snapshots from the trip. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/236mshc7
• Blake Shelton — is releasing a deluxe edition of his latest album “Body Language” on Dec. 3. It will feature 4 new songs, including collaborations with Brooks & Dunn and Hardy, and a love song written with longtime friend Craig Wiseman. • Dustin Lynch – He and Riley Green have released the tongue-in-cheek duet ‘Huntin Land’. The song describes a relationship with a girl who’s downright incompatible in just about every way – except for one, which becomes clear when Lynch sings: “Man, my buddies didn’t understand, Til I told ’em, ‘Y’all, her daddy’s got huntin’ land.'” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2dpu5kyv

SHOOTING THE BULL

FISHING SCAM:
Netflix is being sued by a South Korean broadband company over the traffic surge caused by the hot show of the moment, “Squid Game”. Yes, Netflix has produced some monster shows over the years, including “Stranger Things”, “Bridgerton”, “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Sex Education”, but it may have come up with its most popular show yet with Squid Game, a Korean dystopian survival series topping the streaming platform’s charts across the world. Which brings us to South Korea. Internet service provider SK Broadband has filed a lawsuit against Netflix after experiencing a drastic increase in traffic as a result of the show’s popularity. SK says Netflix should “reasonably” assist financially with the increased network traffic and maintenance work. Netflix says it will “review the claim”.
(Maybe the 2 companies could split the cost. You know, kind of a “squid pro quo”.)
(The way I see it, if the internet company survived the Kimmy K sex tape, it’ll survive “Squid Game”!)

SCIENTISTS SAY:
➢ Unsurprisingly, married couples often share the same interests and even lifestyle habits. Now, a new study says they often share the same medical history, too. Researchers from Tohoku University found that that married couples display a high degree of similarity when it comes to their body shapes, blood pressure, and even the diseases they develop — such as diabetes. The scientists discovered couples also had very similar blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides levels. (Well, the blood pressure, you can blame on the kids…)
➢ Motorists whose diets are loaded with sugar, processed meats, and junk food are more likely to be involved in a car accident, according to new research. Scientists say snacking on burgers, sausage rolls, and biscuits – or guzzling soft drinks — is linked to riskier behavior behind the wheel, too. The study of 800 Estonians adds to evidence that what you eat can predict how safely you drive. Those who drink energy drinks at least once a week were twice as likely to speed as those who don’t. And while foods that are high in sugar and fat may briefly increase alertness, it is believed they can cause a reduction in concentration levels and mood. (Especially if you drop your powdered jelly donut while driving. I HATE when that happens!)

SEAMEAT:
It wasn’t long ago that plant-based meat from companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods was the in-thing. But that’s so 2020. Get ready for (wait for it…) plant-based SEAFOOD! Several companies are already selling alternative seafood, with sales in the sector growing 23% from 2019 to 2020. The US National Defense Council says plant-based seafood could help alleviate the demand for fresh-caught fish, curbing overfishing that can decrease fish populations, reduce biodiversity in the ocean and harm habitats. But what is plant-based seafood made of? Many of them list ingredients like seaweed, peas or beans of some kind, including lentils, soy beans, fava beans and navy beans. Plant-based fish alternatives comes in forms including fish sticks, fish fillets, fish burgers, crab cakes and fish cakes.
(Yeah, but how does it taste? And don’t say “Like chicken”!)
(I just KNEW that stuff would be made from seaweed!)
(I heard it’s algae rage!)

THE TRAITS OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE TO 100 YEARS OLD:
☞ Positivity: It’s associated with higher levels of self-perceived health, which seems to protect people from depression and other afflictions. (Well, I AM good at ignoring health problems…)
☞ Feeling connected:  Experts say religion or spirituality has ties to longevity. They not only help with access to social supports and a sense of purpose, they are better “coping strategies” than turning to alcohol or indulging in “comfort foods.”
☞ Prioritizing plant-based nutrition:  Areas around the world with the most extended longevity all have distinct culture-based eating patterns, usually plant-based. (Fine. Put onions on my hot dog, then…)
☞ Enjoying the great outdoors:  When you’re outdoors, you’re being active. You’re also enjoying nature, and are more likely to interact with others. All this can promote happy feelings, which promotes health. (Unless you’re behind a lawn mower…)
☞ Remaining active:  Guidelines recommend combining 150-300 minutes weekly of moderate-intensity activity with more vigorous exercise to promote healthy aging. That means being able to continue to do the things you enjoy for as long as you want without pain.
☞ Retaining a sense of purpose:  Whether they care for great-grandchildren or partake in cultural crafts, the elderly in areas where people live the longest typically stay busy with productive activities. (Note: they don’t generally stay busy by flying hot-air balloons, wrestling crocodiles or changing light bulbs located over a stairway!)
☞ Good genes:  Our genetics contribute 20-30% to our longevity. If you have a parent who lived to 95+, you have better odds of a healthier (and probably longer) life. (BOTH my parents lived to 95…total!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Ouch! Bing’s top search word is “Google”, according to Google. As Google’s parent company, Alphabet, made its case to appeal a $5 billion fine handed down by the European Union, a spokesperson for the company made the astonishing claim, saying: “We have submitted evidence showing that the most common search query on Bing is by far Google.” Bing is a search engine owned and operated by Microsoft.

→ In Medieval times, it was believed that garlic worn as a necklace would stop your soul from leaving your body.
→ Spraying yourself with garlic oil will repel mosquitoes.
