BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE***★ Suzanne Somers, best known for her roles on “Three’s Company” and “Step by Step”, has died. She would have been 77 today. A statement from her family says she died peacefully at home early Sunday, and “She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years.” The statement also said “Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family (which) was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday.” A private family burial will take place this week, and a memorial will be held in November.

★ Jada Pinkett Smith, who has been public about living with alopecia, says she had the condition in common with late friend Tupac Shakur. She told People that the legendary rapper, who was killed in 1996, also had the autoimmune disease that causes unpredictable hair loss. She claims that Shakur whom she also referred to as her “soulmate”, kept the details of his alopecia a secret due to societal pressures at the time. Quote: “I don’t think Pac ever talked about his alopecia, but he also looked really good with a bald head.”

★ Ken Jeong is looking to get into daytime. “The Masked Singer” judge is developing a talk show, with a projected 2024 launch. He recorded a test show in New York on Friday. The show is being developed and produced under the SAG Network Code, which allows actors and hosts to work on certain projects, including daytime talk shows during the actors strikes. Jim Biederman, who produced “The Kids in the Hall”, is serving as showrunner, writer and director, and is exec producing alongside Jeong.

★ The Swifties have taken over the box office — as expected. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” earned $39 million on its opening day Friday, just shy of the $39.3 million October opening day record set by “Joker” in 2019. With that kind of start, Swift’s concert film has a chance to beat the October opening weekend record also held by “Joker” at $96.2 million. Some industry estimates have the film netting an opening weekend of about $103 million once all the numbers are in. 82% of Friday’s audience were women, and 63% in the 18-34 age group.

★ “Captain America” actor Chris Evans just broke a lot of hearts. He confirmed he’s married … and trotted out the hardware to prove it. The “Avengers” actor hit the stage Saturday during New York Comic Con — where he sat for a Q&A, and explicitly said he was hitched and enjoying the husband life. In the same breath, he also flashed his wedding band. He elaborated a bit on the ceremonies he and his wife, Alba Baptista, shared. The had one wedding on the east coast (reports are that it was at his Boston-area home), and another in Baptista’s native Portugal.

★ If you thought a “Seinfeld” reunion is coming — get out! Julia Louis-Dreyfus put a damper on the rumors sparked by Jerry Seinfeld’s recent cryptic comments. At a stand-up gig last week, Seinfeld told the crowd: “Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending.” But if a reunion is happening, Louis-Dreyfus, who starred as ‘Elaine Benes’, says she hasn’t heard about it. She told The Guardian: “I just saw [that news] …And I don’t know what the hell he’s talking about.” While she could, of course, be faking ignorance, Seinfeld himself has said in the past that a “Seinfeld” reunion would never happen.

★ Two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine says he will retire from acting, at age 90, following the release of his latest film. He said to BBC: “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now.” Caine stars in “The Great Escaper” opposite Glenda Jackson, who died in June, shortly after completing her part. He told an interviewer: “I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will beat this? The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

THEY DON’T CALL IT “JUNK” FOOD FOR NOTHING:
If you’re the type who just CAN’T put down that bag of potato chips until it’s gone, you’re not alone. Not only that, science is now telling us the problem isn’t you, it’s the junk food. In fact, after a series of studies, a University of Michigan professor says that ultra-processed foods, or UPFs, are just as addictive as nicotine, cocaine or heroin — and more than 1 in 10 of us are hooked. Prof. Ashley Gearhardt, who created the Yale Food Addiction Scale by applying the same criteria that experts use to diagnose substance addiction, says her analysis of 281 studies across 36 countries found that a staggering 14% of adults are hooked on UPFs. Examples of ultra-processed foods include sausage, ice cream, soft drinks, and sugary cereals. Even worse, eating these foods has been linked to cognitive decline, cancer, psychological distress and even early death. Why do we become addicted to junk food? Eating ultra-processed foods triggers a rush of dopamine followed by a sudden drop-off, resulting in an endless cycle of craving, getting a fix and crashing — similar to that of someone who is addicted to alcohol or drugs.
(Makes sense. But I’d like to request an exception for sausage – on compassionate grounds!)
(You do realize that all they’ve done by telling me this is make me want donuts…)

LEAVE THE LEAVES:
Here it is: Your annual excuse NOT to rake the leaves that are piling higher on your lawn by the day. The Nature Conservancy of Canada has a green-friendly response for those of us who’d like to avoid the back-breaking and callus-creating task of clearing the leaves: Just don’t do it. Why not? There are 3 major benefits to keeping the leaves in the yard during fall. First, it helps biodiversity, as there are many native insects and small critters such as frogs and toads that will hibernate under the leaves during the winter. As well, it is a food source for birds, such as robins, since they will often forage among the leaves to look for insects to eat. The other benefit is to the lawn itself. Leaves provide a natural mulch when they break down, which helps soil development. While large piles of leaves can impact the growth of grass and other plants come spring, a thin layer of leaves can help maintain the health of gardens and lawns.
(My neighbor will be so happy to hear that he doesn’t have to blow them into my yard this year!)
(Leaves provide a food source for birds? I didn’t even know they could cook!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ Chemical engineers are pioneering a process to equip ships with the onboard capacity to turn collected plastic garbage into fuel. The result has been named “blue diesel” and would save time, money, and emissions in both the trips necessary for ocean-cleaning vessels to reach the mainland to offload, and in running fuel use. As you may know, millions of tons of plastic enter oceans every year and accumulate where several currents meet. Scientists at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts say they have come up with “a specialized reactor that converts harvested waste plastic using an innovative chemical process…This compresses the plastic at high temperature and high pressure into “blue diesel”. (Can’t wait for them to use this on vehicles. Truckers will be stopping at 7-11 for 2 Big Gulps – one for themselves, and one for their rig!)
➢ A dog fittingly named “Cinderella” will get to live out her “happily ever after” with her new family after spending more than 3 years in a Los Angeles animal shelter. In total, the pit bull spent 1,139 days at the SPCA LA PD Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center in Long Beach. The organization said: “News of her adoption was a gift to the staff and volunteers.” Cinderella was moved to the facility from Long Beach Animal Care Services in August 2020. Since she arrived, she’s spent hundreds of hours in behavioral training as she waited for Prince Charming to take her away. She now lives with a family of 3 dogs and 4 cats.

THE BENEFITS OF A COLD SHOWER:
I KNOW – Monday mornings hit like a cold shower anyway. But literal cold showers are effective at relieving many symptoms and are said by some health care professionals to provide an improved sense of well-being. Here are some of the benefits…
☞ Increases endorphins: Taking a cold shower for up to 5 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week, was shown to help relieve symptoms of depression. The cold water sends electrical impulses to your brain, jolting your system to increase alertness, clarity, and energy levels. Endorphins, or “happy hormones”, are also released. (I know it sure makes you happy when you stop!)
☞ Improves metabolism: White fat is bad, but brown fat plays an important role in adult health. Healthy levels of brown fat also indicate that white fat will be at a healthy level. And brown fat is activated by exposure to cold temperature. This can result in increased metabolism and possible weight loss.
☞ Improved circulation: Regular cold showers can make the circulatory system more efficient. Some people also report that their skin looks better as a result of cold showers, probably thanks to better circulation. And data shows that cold water can promote healing after a sports injury, too, similar to the way ice can reduce inflammation.
☞ Helps fight off common illnesses: Our bodies are designed to become resistant to the elements we are exposed to. Leukocytes help fight infection in the body. The shock of cold water in the bloodstream stimulates leukocytes. This means that taking cold showers can help your resistance to common illnesses, like colds and the flu. And one study indicated that cold showers make the body more resistant to certain types of cancer. (I guess I’ll never know!)
(I tried it. I haven’t seen any health benefits yet — but I have become easier to peel!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Netflix has plans to open two permanent retail locations in 2025 – allowing fans to eat, shop, and drink, while enjoying the streamer’s offerings. Not a lot of details so far, but we do know that the “In Real Life” venues will be called “Netflix House” and will feature rotating installations, live shows, and a menu featuring both scripted and unscripted shows. Each “Netflix House” location will sell physical merchandise and offer dining and entertainment experiences, like the “Squid Game” obstacle course planned for both US spots. (And as Jimmy Fallon said about it: “The only rule at the Netflix restaurant is you can’t share your food. They’ll even have servers going up to tables going, ‘Are you still eating? 3, 2, 1…”)
