BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ “The Drew Barrymore Show” is returning, but it will be without its 3 head writers. The daytime talk show revealed yesterday it’ll be back on October 16. This comes after Barrymore originally planned to return on September 18 when writers were still striking — then reversed her decision after picketing and outcry from WGA members. However, the show will now be without 3 WGA members of its own – Chelsea White, Cristina Kinon and Liz Koe – who have decided not to return. Deadline reports that the show extended offers to the trio as soon as allowed, but they were declined. It is now interviewing new potential writers.

★ Royal biographer Gyles Brandreth said “The Crown” is “riddled with mistakes” and accuses the show of turning the royals “into a soap opera”. As Netflix’s hit historical drama prepares for its 6th and final season, the royal biographer appeared at Henley Literary Festival to promote the reissue of his 2022 biography “Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait”. There, he warned the audience against the many “inaccuracies” depicted in the series. According to Brandreth, who was well acquainted with the late monarch and Prince Philip, “The Crown is as truthful about the present royal family as Shakespeare’s play Richard III is about Richard III… but it’s not quite as well written.” (Newsflash, Brandreth: The royal family IS an ongoing soap opera!)

★ “Saturday Night Live” will return with a lot of recognizable faces plus one new one. The entire cast from the end of Season 48 are returning for Season 49 and the Lorne Michaels-created show has added fresh face Chloe Troast. Pete Davidson, who was set for a big return to his old stomping ground before the Season 48 was cut short due to the writers strike, will kick off the new season with rising rapper Ice Spice as musical guest. The following week will see Bad Bunny pull double-duty as host and musical guest.

★ The NFL is breaking down its coverage of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship. After the KC Chiefs player questioned if the league was “overdoing it” with its focus on Swift, the league said in a statement: “The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news has been a pop cultural moment we’ve leaned into in real time, as it’s an intersection of sport and entertainment, and we’ve seen an incredible amount of positivity around the sport.” Female viewership has increased for the league, and Kelce earned more than 900,000 new Instagram followers in the 2 weeks she attended games to support Kelce.

★ Kevin Spacey was rushed to a hospital in Uzbekistan after experiencing numbness in one of his arms and fearing a heart attack. The “American Beauty” star underwent an MRI after the health scare, which occurred during the Tashkent International Film Festival, but doctors gave him the all-clear. Spacey returned to the festival and appeared on stage that night, telling the crowd his health was “normal” and the experience “made me really take a moment and think about how fragile life is — for all of us.”

CATS AND DOGS:
⇒ Veterinary researchers have discovered that cats “glow” in the dark, according to a new study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science. Nightclub goers are familiar with the trippy sight of their white shirt or neon tiki drink seemingly aglow in the dark of the dance floor — an example of fluorescence under black lights. Scientists in Australia analyzed a museum’s collection of mammals to see how many glow in the dark with a UV light turned on. They found that 125 species had the fluorescent properties that allow them to glow in the dark under a UV light, including the domestic species of cat — no club lights required. (No kitten around?)
⇒ Research from the University of Texas say that, in general, cat lovers are smarter than dog lovers. Their research echoes the same sentiment shared by other experts: that cat lovers show more mental prowess than dog lovers. The Texas team characterized ‘the canine person’ as loyal, direct, kind, faithful, utilitarian, helpful, and a team player…while ‘the feline person’ was typically found to be graceful, subtle, independent, intelligent, thoughtful, and mysterious.” It noted that cat lovers are especially prone to neuroticism as well. (Neurotic? The cat lovers – or the cats themselves?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Police in Slovakia say a speed camera there picked up a very strange image. In the quiet village of Sterusy, officers were startled to see the image of a family dog behind the wheel of a speeding car, as picked up by the road’s camera footage. After posting the image in a funny Facebook post, the owner of the car was quickly found. The problem? The driver claimed that his brown hunting dog happened to leap across the seat into his lap when the he was driving along the road. The footage proved that to be a…tall tail. He was ultimately fined for the offense. (Not the first time a guy has “blamed the dog” …and definitely not the last!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/vpy9sx9v
➢ A woman has filed a lawsuit against Disney World in Florida, claiming she suffered an “injurious wedgie” while riding an attraction at the theme park’s Typhoon Lagoon water park in 2019. In the suit, Emma McGuinness says that her injuries occurred on Humunga Kowabunga, a slide that is approximately 214 feet above a pool. She and her husband are seeking $50,000 in damages. (****CAUTION*** $50-thousand? She’s just pulling that number out of her ass!)

PETTY REASONS PEOPLE STOPPED DATING SOMEONE:
(According to a recent Reddit thread…)
☞ “I briefly dated a young woman who was insanely out of my league. People stared when we went out. Anyway, her voice was like Minnie Mouse, and I just couldn’t take it. I still feel bad about that one.”
☞ “My cat said hello to her, and she didn’t say hi back.”
☞ “She ate her peas one at a time! You’ve never seen anything like it. It took her an hour to finish them…I’ve seen her eat corn niblets…she scooped them.”
☞ “He wore the same shirt on both of our dates. Get this — years later, I got into the elevator at work, and he was there. IN THE SAME SHIRT.”
☞ “If a woman has a horse in her dating profile, you will never be more important than that horse. It may be petty, but it’s backed up by personal experience.”
☞ “A female friend broke up with a guy because ‘his allergies were a sign of weakness.’ Yeah, I responded the same way you did.”
☞ “They audibly scraped their teeth on metal silverware with every bite they took.”
☞ “I have a friend who stopped dating someone because he found out they were lactose intolerant. His reasoning why was, ‘What if I taste a really great dessert, and I want to share the experience with her, and she can’t even taste it?'”
☞ “She said she ‘had to go tinkles’ on our blind date. Never contacted her again.”

DID YOU KNOW?
Taking your cell phone into the bathroom to spend some quality time on the toilet isn’t such a good idea, according to a Stanford- and Harvard-trained gastroenterologist. In a video posted to TikTok, Dr. Saurabh Sethi says that scrolling on social media while doing your business can have some serious health consequences. (and for that matter, ‘doing business’ on your phone while doing your business can, as well!). Sethi explained: “First, using your phone while doing number 2 can lead to prolonged sitting on the toilet, which can cause strain and pressure on your rectum and anus”. This can lead to issues such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures and rectal prolapse, he concluded. You probably don’t need any more details than that. But these aren’t the only reasons not to bring your phone to the bathroom with you. He also says it can be a breeding ground for bacteria. But if you must, “at least have a disinfectant wipe around to clean the phone after you’re done”, says the good doctor. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/uxuet7yw

BS CHRONOMETER 10.06.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Mad Hatter Day”, described as ‘April Fool’s Day’ without the pranks, it’s an opportunity to celebrate silliness. The date was chosen from illustrations depicting the ‘Mad Hatter’ character from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” wearing a hat with a slip of paper that reads: “In this style 10/6”.
• “World Smile Day”, observed annually on the 1st Friday in October, when we’re encouraged to do an act of kindness … help one person smile.  (I do this every time I leave a room…) LINK: http://www.worldsmileday.com
• “Plus Size Appreciation Day”, recognizing the gorgeous men and women who may be larger — but are also larger than life in so many ways. The day’s founder, Women Rock, Inc., says the day is for “boosting the confidence for many women and men around the world.”
• “German-American Day”, honoring the likes of Albert Einstein, Lou Gehrig, John Steinbeck, and Levi Strauss. In fact, German-Americans make up 17% of the US population (49 million). Prosit!
• “Physician Assistant Day”, honoring those nice people who order you to take off all your clothes and put the gown on. And make sure the opening is at the back!
• “Come and Take It Day”, a day to go out and take something that you’ve always wanted, or to defiantly say “come and take it” to someone who wants something from you that you don’t want to give up. (Seems to have worked well for Kevin McCarthy!)
• “Noodle Day”, Can you believe that noodles have been around for over 4,000 years? They are popular all over the world and range in shape from flat, to round, to twisted, to sheets, to tubes, and many more. They can be made from rice, buckwheat, wheat, with or without eggs, and even from zucchini.
• “Coaches Day”, Today, thank and honor a coach, either past or present, who made a positive impact on you or a loved one. If you are a coach, check in with those you work with, or those you have mentored.
• “World Cerebral Palsy Day”, when people come together to celebrate and support those living with CP, and help create a more accessible future. Cerebral Palsy affects more than 18 million people worldwide. LINK: https://worldcpday.org/
• “Garlic Lovers Day”, saluting the ‘stinking rose’ that has been cultivated as long as history has been recorded. A few stinky facts …
→ Over 5,000 years ago, Chinese herbalists used garlic to reduce blood pressure.
→ In Medieval times, it was believed that garlic worn as a necklace would stop your soul from leaving your body.
→ Spraying yourself with garlic oil will repel mosquitoes.
→ It’s said that if you rub a clove of garlic on your partner’s feet at night, you’ll taste it on his or her breath the next morning. (We wonder if the opposite is also true!)

SATURDAY-
• “Bathtub Day”, encouraging a luxurious long, hot bath to develop inner peace. Almost everyone nowadays takes showers, so here’s a chance to recall some of the luxury of days gone by. (And count how many times the kids come to the door…)
• “National Frappé Day”, honoring a versatile drink with numerous variables, so there are flavors to suit everyone. Frappes typically are blended drinks made with either coffee or espresso and topped with whipped cream. (So, today, ‘Don’t worry, be frappée’!)
• “Forgiveness & Happiness Day”, observe it by working to repair damaged relationships, by asking for forgiveness, by forgiving others, and by forgiving yourself.
• “National Inner Beauty Day”, to spread awareness and lend support to those subject to human trafficking. The day is observed to understand that any type of forced labor and sexual exploitation, and slavery — is punishable and morally wrong.
• “You Matter to Me Day”, created in 2010 by Linda Jew, who had a friend and his son pass away, and realized that she never told them, “You matter to me”. She began telling people she knew that they mattered, and decided to start a day centered around the phrase

SUNDAY-
• “Pierogi Day” (also spelled pyrogy, perogi, pirogi), honoring the traditional Eastern European dish consisting of boiled dumplings of unleavened dough stuffed with various ingredients. They’re best served while wearing a babushka. (And covered in sour cream…)
• “Touch Tag Day”, a salute to the schoolyard game that almost every kid has played in some version. Also known as ‘Touch’, ‘Tag’, ‘It’, ‘Chasey’, and ‘Catching’, it has been played by children for thousands of years, as far back as Ancient Egypt. (Best thing about it . . . the equipment is really cheap!)
• “Fluffernutter Day”, a sandwich consisting of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, or creme, that is usually served on white bread. Sometimes foods such as bacon or bananas are added.
• “World Octopus Day”, an annual celebration of the odd animal with 8 semi-autonomous arms, thousands of smart suckers, blue blood, 3 beating hearts, and eerily advanced intelligence.
(BS FUN FACT: The plural for octopus is ‘octopuses’. While Merriam-Webster points out that people also refer to ‘octopi’ and ‘octopodes’ in modern usage, it’s still considered incorrect.)

MONDAY-
• “Thanksgiving Day” in Canada, observed annually since 1879. Originally the date was changed year-to-year. In 1957, parliament decided it would be observed annually as a national holiday on the 2nd Monday in October.
• “Columbus Day” in America, commemorating Christopher Columbus’ October 12th, 1492 ‘discovery of the New World’ … which had already been discovered by Vikings, Siberians, Aboriginals, Aztecs, and many others, centuries before.
• “Leif Erikson Day” in Norway and Iceland, commemorating the Viking explorer’s discovery of North America (‘Vinland’, thought to be northern Newfoundland) circa 1000 AD … almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus.
• “Fire Prevention Day”, a highlight of the annual observance of “Fire Prevention Week”. Why today? It marks the anniversary of the ‘Great Chicago Fire of 1871’, the disaster that began a movement toward fire prevention as an adjunct to firefighting.
• “Beer and Pizza Day”, paying homage to one of the most iconic food and drink combinations on Earth. (without which, would we even HAVE bowling?)
• “National Sneakers Day”, also known as athletic shoes, tennis shoes, gym shoes, sport shoes, runners, or trainers, sneakers are the most democratic form of footwear owned by almost everybody. There is also a large culture dedicated to the appreciation and collection of athletic and casual footwear.
