BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Amid her son’s legal troubles, Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mother, Janice Small Combs, is speaking out in his defence, saying the charges against the music mogul have been blown out of proportion — despite the fact that Diddy has “made mistakes in the past.” In a statement shared by her attorney, Janice said: “It is heartbreaking to see my son judged not for the truth, but for a narrative created out of lies. To bear witness what seems to be like a public lynching of my son before he has had the opportunity to prove his innocence is…too unbearable to put into words.” She also said he “deserves to have his day in court…and to prove his innocence.” The statement comes as Diddy remains behind bars.

★ “Joker” and “Joker: Folie á Deux” director Todd Phillips has ruled out the possibility of doing either a third film or a solo ‘Harley Quinn’ film with Lady Gaga. Phillips helmed both DC movies with Joaquin Phoenix’s more down-to-Earth take on the legendary ‘Batman’ villain, but he has no intention of making any more. In an interview, he said: “I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films.” The critical response to the new Joker movie has been almost universally negative.

★ King Charles will reportedly “pause” his cancer treatment so he can take part in a tour of Australia and Samoa. The Monarch and Queen Camilla are due to fly Down Under next week to kick off the visit on October 18, and The Daily Mail reports he’ll have treatment right up until he flies out, but will take a short break while he’s away and pick it up again after he returns. The 75-year-old was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February after undergoing surgery for a prostate issue.
-Bang!
★ Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes are not in their reality TV era. Swift, who, of course, is dating KC Chief Travis Kelce — and her BFF – who is married to quarterback Patrick Mahomes — will not be part of filming for Bravo’s new reality show about the Super Bowl-winning football team’s wives and girlfriends. Page Six quoted a source as saying the 2 “are not part of the show at all and will not even be filmed.” People has reported that a pilot for the forthcoming reality show was filmed during the NFL offseason after the team won its second consecutive Super Bowl. While the cast has not been officially determined, it may include Mecole Hardman Jr.’s fiancée, Chariah Gordon, and Chris Jones’ longtime partner, Sheawna Weathersby.

★ The infamous house from the 1982 horror classic “Poltergeist” is being transformed into an Airbnb, available to rent by supernatural-obsessed fans. The home, built in 1979, is located in Simi Valley, California. It sold Friday for $1.28 million, and the new owner reportedly wants to turn the 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home into an Airbnb that will replicate the iconic movie’s set. But don’t get too excited just yet. TMZ says it won’t be Airbnb-ready for Halloween, because the owner “wants to make it perfect and not rush things.” (There’s always next year!)

SHOOTING THE BULL
FUELISH BEHAVIOR:
If your car’s check engine light is on, the problem might be you. Or more specifically, your habit of over-filling the gas tank. As car enthusiast and TikTok user @sweet_tea recently pointed out in a video, if you regularly keep putting gas into your vehicle after the pump has clicked off repeatedly, you risk ruining your purge valve, a device used to remove excess fuel vapor. That’ll run you about $500, Sweet Tea says. And Autotrader confirmed that tip in a separate post. Not only that, a car’s charcoal canister, which absorbs fuel vapor, can also get damaged – and a fix for that will also cost another $500. Need another reason not to keep pumping gas when the pump says “No”? Solenoids, used in starting a vehicle, can also be harmed — and repairs will cost about $400. The good news? These issues will generally only occur over time, if you overfill your tank repeatedly. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3h5w9b6p
(The bad news? You have no idea how many times the guy who owned the car before you did that!)
(Hold on. Now, he’s just making up car parts! Just like my mechanic…)

MARRIAGE MATERIAL:
A couple in Australia who misplaced their wedding video have had it returned after 57 years – thanks to Facebook. Terry Cheyne of Aberdeen, Scotland, was having his large collection of Super 8 films transferred to DVD this year, when he discovered footage of a wedding between 2 people he didn’t recognize. So, he posted an image from the film to a local Facebook group. Six months went by, and nothing. But then the pic was shared to a group for natives of Aberdeen’s Mastrick area and it came to the attention of Aileen Turnbull, who lives in Australia. She says she looked at it, turned to her husband and said: “There’s our wedding photograph.” The couple, who were married in 1967 in Scotland, later moved to Brisbane. They had only seen their wedding video once, before accidentally leaving it in a borrowed projector when it was returned to the owner. She messaged Terry, who turned out to be the nephew of the person with the projector all those years ago. Terry soon sent the Turnbulls, who are both 77, a digitized copy of their wedding video. Aileen said seeing the video after 57 years was “absolutely amazing – I still can’t believe it really.”
(This is such a beautiful story that I won’t even finish it with a sarcastic comment. But maybe this time, they’ll get around to watching it more than once!)
***Caution*** (57 years? That’s older than the Pam & Tommy wedding video!)

MATH – BY THE NUMBERS:
A new poll says that one-third of adults experience anxiety when they’re forced to – do math. The study of 3,000 adults in the UK found that almost a third (29%) actively try to avoid anything to do with numbers and data. And with recent inflationary pressures, and the increasing cost of living putting greater pressure on people’s math skills in order to make ends meet, 29% also said this affects their mental wellness. And why do some of us find working with numbers so difficult? More than half said they stopped studying math in school as soon as they were allowed to. And 66% said they have to agree that you don’t realize how important math skills are until you need them to navigate your daily life.
(66%! That’s like – almost half!)
(For me, it’s not doing math that causes anxiety. It’s when I have to help MY KIDS do math!)

HOW TO GAIN WEIGHT:
Admittedly, it’s not on the “to-do” list for many of us. But for some, either die to illness, genetics, or purely for aesthetic reasons, it’s needed, but it’s not easy. Here’s how, according to a dietician…
☞ Be in calorie surplus: We hear weight loss fanatics talking about “calorie deficits”. To lose weight, try to take in 300-500 more calories than the amount needed to maintain your weight, using an online calculator. LINK: https://tdeecalculator.net/
☞ Include more fat: Unfortunately, we’re not talking about fried foods, but healthy fats, like avocado, olive oil, peanut and almond butters. (Can I at least put BBQ sauce on them?)
☞ Swap your dairy: If you usually drink skim milk and eat non-fat Greek yogurt, try whole milk and whole milk yogurt instead. Cheese and full-fat cream are also good dairy choices.
☞ Snack more often: People struggle with a calorie surplus because they think they are eating more than they actually are, and can feel full between meals. Nuts, cheese, granola, and dried fruit are some snack ideas that can help.
☞ Eat more protein: It is imperative for muscle growth, maintenance, and overall development. Protein-rich foods include meats, seafood, eggs, tofu, beans, and more. (Just don’t try to put them all together in one sandwich…)
(Alternative plan: Get a job at Krispy Kreme. Trust me.)

DID YOU KNOW?
If you’re one of those unfortunate people who lost their sense of smell as a result of COVID-19, you’ll be happy to know that researchers at St Joseph’s Health Care London (Ontario) are trying to help. Loss of sense of smell and taste is a common symptom of COVID. It can also be accompanied by parosmia, a disorder that turns normal odors into a stench. One new treatment involves injecting a local anesthetic into a collection of nerves in the neck, thus temporarily blocking some signals resulting in a distorted sense of smell. It brought some relief to test subject Rebecca, who lost 30 pounds because many foods smelled bad to her. Quote: “Coffee was the worst. It smelled like hot garbage.”

BS CHRONOMETER 10.08.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Face Your Fears Day”, to give us the permission, the encouragement and the little nudge we need to step up to our fears and say “No more.” Whether your deepest fear is to fly, to encounter snakes or spiders, or to seek a better job, or a new romantic relationship, today is the day to overcome your trepidations. (Fine. Just don’t make me speak in public!)
• “Pierogi Day” (also spelled pyrogy, perogi, pirogi), honoring the traditional Eastern European dish consisting of boiled dumplings of unleavened dough stuffed with various ingredients. They’re best served while wearing a babushka. (And smothered in sour cream!)
• “Touch Tag Day”, a salute to the schoolyard game that almost every kid has played in some version. The game that’s variously known as ‘Touch’, ‘Tag’, ‘It’, ‘Chasey’, and ‘Catching’ has been played by children for thousands of years, going back as far as Ancient Egypt. (Best thing about it . . . the equipment is really cheap!)
• “World Octopus Day”, an annual celebration of the odd animal with 8 semi-autonomous arms, thousands of smart suckers, cold-adapted blue blood, 3 beating hearts, and eerily advanced intelligence.
(BS FUN FACT: The plural for octopus is ‘octopuses’. While Merriam-Webster points out that people also refer to ‘octopi’ and ‘octopodes’ in modern usage, it’s still considered incorrect.)
• “Fluffernutter Day”. A fluffernutter is a sandwich consisting of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, or creme, that is usually served on white bread. Sometimes foods such as bacon or bananas are added as well.
• “Own Business Day”. Business owners don’t just run their business – they live it. They are the economic backbones of our communities, creating jobs and serving as role models. Today, we celebrate them by promoting and giving them extra awareness. (And by not shopping on Amazon…)
• “Hero Day”, honoring the real-life heroes who inspire us to be the best person we can possibly be. Today, thank those who go above and beyond to care for those who need help. They may be an emergency worker, or a mentor, like a parent or a teacher, or someone from a completely different walk of life who turned out to be a hero to you. (For me, it’s the guy who invented the double-cheeseburger, but to each their own…!)
