BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Liam Payne’s Argentina hotel room has been raided by cops, who are on the hunt for “new intel” about the staffers working on the day of the One Direction singer’s death. Officials were searching for documents within the Casa Sur’s registration books as part of the raid, in addition to information stored in its computers, according to Us Weekly. In addition, the 4-star Buenos Aires hotel “must provide” more security camera footage from the lobby and courtyard on Oct. 16 — the day Payne plunged to his death, according to the report. The raid came a day after the singer’s father, Geoff Payne, said he was cooperating with officials investigating his son’s death.

★ Liam Neeson‘s run as an action movie star may come to an end next year. The Oscar nominee is teasing his retirement from the genre that reignited his acting career in 2008, with “Taken”. And now, even into his 70s, Neeson continues to perform his own fight scenes with some help from longtime stunt collaborator Mark Vanselow. But it can’t go on forever. He said to People: “I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage…I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.” While Neeson has not yet set a specific date for his last action movie role, he did say that it will likely be in 2025, “Maybe the end of next year.”
-Variety
★ It looks like Disney has found its ‘Prince Charming’. The Wrap reports that Chris Hemsworth is in talks for the new live-action film from “Wonka” and “Paddington” filmmaker Paul King. The movie, about the prince from “Cinderella” who goes on a quest to find her after she leaves a single glass slipper behind, is based on a script that King co-wrote. Hemsworth is a big part of the larger Disney family, having played ‘Thor’ in many MCU movies. No official comment from Disney yet.
-TheWrap
★ A 2-part documentary series about “The Jerry Springer Show” is coming to Netflix. Debuting on Jan. 7, “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action” will explore how the long-running tabloid talk show became one of the most outrageous TV hits of the 1990s. The official description says the “jaw-dropping” doc will feature “first-hand testimony and revelations from show insiders,” as well as interviews with producers and former guests, to raise “renewed questions about who was responsible” for the destruction the show caused, “and how far things should go in the name of entertainment.”
-Variety
★ Tom Cruise’s ‘mystery movie’ for Warner Bros is reportedly due to enter production in the UK soon, with principle photography beginning as soon as next month. Variety reports that the untitled movie, starring Cruise, is being directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. While the plot is currently unknown, Warner Bros. previously revealed Cruise would be leading a star-studded cast, which includes “Anatomy of a Fall” actress Sandra Hüller, “Breaking Bad” star Jesse Plemons, Emmy Award-winner John Goodman and “Your Honor” actor Michael Stuhlbarg. Cruise is currently filming the 8th “Mission: Impossible” movie, and is also working on the sequel to “Top Gun: Maverick”.

I WON’T DRINK TO THIS:
While there are many so-called hangover cures out there (my personal fave is brunch – without my mother-in-law!), according to new research, it seems that exercise might be the key to avoiding those horrible mornings. The study, published in the journal Addictive Behaviours, involved 1,700 undergrad students who experienced at least one hangover per month. Results showed a correlation between regular exercise and reduced hangover severity. The researchers say they believe that physical activity may help alleviate hangover symptoms in the following ways…
• Modulating pain response
• Leading to better quality sleep
• Improving metabolism, and
• Reducing inflammation
(Physical activity helps with hangovers? No WONDER I never figured this out on my own!)
(Exercise? For a hangover? This is a perfect example of the cure being worse than the disease!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD (Germany Edition):

➢ A new fire station in Germany, that was destroyed in a fire which caused about US$26 million in damage and destroyed equipment, did not have a fire alarm. Fire broke out early one morning last week at the Stadtallendorf fire station in Hesse and destroyed, among other things, the equipment hall and about a dozen emergency vehicles. Local officials told media that no fire alarm system was installed in the building because experts considered it unnecessary. No one was hurt. (…which is why it’s OK to laugh at these meatheads!)
➢ In a hilarious traffic violation that was seemingly custom-made to go viral, a driver in Germany was caught speeding — while wearing a ‘Cookie Monster’ costume. This character was clocked at 91kph in an 80 zone, and the traffic camera snapped the unforgettable moment at 9:08pm. Police say the masked “suspect” faces a 40 euro fine if caught. Online, commenters couldn’t help but laugh at the Muppet-inspired mishap, with one writing: “Did they use the Count to determine the speed?” (Is there also a fine for “driving while googly-eyed”?) BABY HANDLES:
Babycenter has released its USA ‘most-popular baby names’ list for 2024. And the top-10 for both boys and girls is very similar to last year’s list. Here they are…
BOYS: GIRLS:
1. Noah                   1. Olivia
2. Liam                   2. Amelia
3. Oliver                 3. Emma
4. Elijah                  4. Sophia
5. Mateo                 5. Charlotte
6. Lucas                  6. Isabella
7. Levi                     7. Ava
8. Ezra                    8. Mia
9. Asher                  9. Ellie
10. Leo                    10. Luna
…but the fun is in the details. Babycenter said that the name ‘Emrys’ made its debut on the boy’s list, at #954, while other boy names starting with E, such as ‘Emir’, ‘Enrique’, ‘Edgar’, and ‘Eliel’, shot up in the rankings. ‘Easton’ and ‘Everett’ re-entered the Top 100, at #92 and #93, respectively. For girls, new popular choices include ‘Evelyn’, ‘Brooklyn’, and ‘Madelyn’. Other “rising stars” include ‘Adalee’, ‘Avalynn’, ‘Lakelyn’, ‘Rosalee’ and ‘Maelynn’, all of which joined the top 1,000 girl names in the U.S. for the first time.

DID YOU KNOW?
Our favorite time to spend money while browsing social media is precisely 2:36pm on a Saturday. A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults who shop on social media, found that’s the time you’re most likely to pull the trigger on that thing you saw on a social platform. The poll determined that while Saturday is the top shopping day, with 42% of us busting out the online payment process, Friday is a close second (41%). Gen X was found to be more likely than any other generation to shop the “Sunday Scaries” away (24%), while Gen Z shops their way through the Monday blues (17%). (My wife was part of this survey. Her answer? “All of the above”!)

BS CHRONOMETER 10.25.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Frankenstein Friday”, honoring Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein”, and the monster from her story. Frankenstein was first published anonymously in 1818, under its original title: “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus”. And, yes, there are also “Frankenstein Days” on Oct. 25, and on Shelley’s birthdate, Aug. 30. (“Freaky”, huh?)
• “Bandanna Day”, a cancer fundraiser in Australia. As it turns out, some people spell it with a double-n near the end! LINK: https://www.bandannaday.org.au/
• “Punk for a Day Day”, so get on your faux-hawk, your stick-on tats, your imitation leather and strut your stuff! (And should I also forget how to play musical instruments?)
• “International Artists Day”, honoring the contribution artists make to society. Today, visit a gallery, participate in something creative, or buy that painting that you’ve been admiring.
• “Cartoonists Against Crime Day”, honoring cartoonists, graphic artists, and illustrators, who promote crime prevention through their works. (Stop varmint … or I’ll draw!)
• “Chucky the Notorious Killer Doll Day”, celebrating the murderous, knife-wielding doll brought to life in the horror films: “Child’s Play” (1988); “Child’s Play 2″ (1990); “Child’s Play 3″ (1991); “Bride of Chucky” (1998); “Seed of Chucky” (2004); “Curse of Chucky” (2013); “Cult of Chucky” (2017), and “Child’s Play” (2019), plus the TV series “Chucky” (2021-24)
• “Greasy Foods Day”. From pizza and nachos to burgers and French fries, it’s nearly impossible to ignore this guilty pleasure. (Especially if it’s someone else’s!)
• “World Pasta Day”, honoring one of Italy’s greatest gifts to the world. It’s estimated there are around 350 different types of pasta . . . and about 4 times that many names for them.

SATURDAY:
• “Pumpkin Day”, celebrating the orange member of the squash family best known for being carved into jack-o-lanterns or made into pie filling. Did you know that pumpkins are 90% water? At one time, they were recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites. (Not saying it worked, just that it was recommended…)
• “Make a Difference Day”, a celebration of people helping people and neighbors helping neighbors on the 4th Saturday of October. It’s the 34th annual. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4e7hds76
• “Mincemeat Day”. Odds are you either love it or you can’t stand the stuff. Mincemeat is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits, spices, and sometimes beef suet. Originally, it always contained meat; many modern recipes use vegetable shortening in its place.
• “Horseless Carriage Day”. In the early days of automobiles, it was common that carriages were pulled by animals, typically horses, but automobiles were not. More recently, the phrase has been compared to “Retronyms” — terms like ‘cordless phone’ and ‘wireless internet’, when a new technology is described by what it does not have, compared to older technology. Other examples include ‘acoustic guitar’, ‘natural flavor”, and ‘black-and-white TV’.
• “Mule Day”, celebrating these unique hybrid animals. Mules are the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse and are more common than hinnies, the offspring of a female donkey and a male horse. Because donkeys and horses are different species with a different number of chromosomes, their offspring are nearly always sterile. (And stubborn!)
• “Pit Bull Awareness Day”, begun in 2007 as a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners. LINK: https://love-a-bull.org/news-events/npad/
• “Worldwide Howl at the Moon Night”, an annual pre-Halloween tradition. A wolf howl can carry up to 10 miles in areas where there are no trees. Owoooooo!

SUNDAY:
• “Boxer Shorts Day”, a salute to their invention on this date in 1901. (I would have a “boxer shorts” joke here, but I couldn’t find any “clean ones”…)
• “Black Cat Day”, to raise awareness about low adoption rates for black cats. In spite of the fact that black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck, in many historical settings and cultures, they were actually related to positive things. Today, we salute them. (Something that they will acknowledge by remaining completely aloof…)
• “Cranky Co-Workers Day”, in honor of all the complaining and just plain cranky people you work with and have to endure all year. This is the day to let them go with it, and enjoy their misery. (Is that why everyone is being so nice to me today?)
• “Mother-in-Law Day”. There’s a common assumption that they are unappreciated, joked about, and generally maligned. That might be the case, but most of the time they aren’t honored as they deserve. Today, we honor mothers-in-law “for their contributions to the success of families and for their good humor in enduring bad jokes.” (Got any good ones?)
• “Potato Day”, one of several ‘food holidays’ honoring the humble spud. This root vegetable became one of the New World’s most important discoveries. What’s the best way to cook ’em? Fries? Mashed? Baked? Au Gratin w/Gruyere & Creme Fraiche?
• “American Beer Day”. Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the United States, where about 9,000 breweries produce more than 6.4 billion gallons annually, worth over $100 million.
• “World Occupational Therapy Day”, celebrating Occupational Therapists (OTs), who enhance children and adults’ abilities to engage in daily roles and activities.
• “Navy Day”, paying tribute to all US men and women who serve as sailors. October 27, 1775 is considered by many to be the birthday of the US Navy. Officially, this celebration has been replaced by Armed Forces Day in May.
• “World Day for Audiovisual Heritage”, to raise awareness of the significance and preservation risks of recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programs). LINK: https://www.unesco.org/en/days/audiovisual-heritage
