BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “The Crown” is putting one of Princess Diana’s most infamous moments front and center. The trailer for season 5 of the Netflix drama, released yesterday, gives a peek at Diana’s 1995 interview on the BBC documentary series “Panorama”, in which she discussed the dissolution of her marriage with then-Prince Charles. In her iconic black blazer and white t-shirt, Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, tells journalist Martin Bashir, played by Prasanna Puwanarajah, “I won’t go quietly. I’ll battle ’til the end.” Elsewhere in the trailer, Charles (Dominic West) and his mother Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) argue about the state of the family, as Charles contends, “For years I’ve called for a more modern monarchy that reflects the world outside.” But as Charles is seen waving to girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles from a Buckingham Palace window, the Queen says, “I don’t think it’s my behavior that’s threatening its survival.” Season 5 of The Crown drops Nov. 9. ★ “That 70s Show” star Danny Masterson’s rape trial recently began in LA, and it’s now reported that Lisa Marie Presley could be called to testify. Presley is on the prosecution’s witness list, not necessarily due to witnessing any alleged crimes, but as more of a character witness regarding the Church of Scientology. Masterson is still a member of the controversial organization, which Presley left in 2014. Other names on the prosecution’s list include Carmen Llywelyn — who was married to “My Name Is Earl” star Jason Lee — and actress Brie Shaffer, who once worked as Masterson’s personal assistant. Llywelyn has previously stated she still has nightmares about her experiences with Scientology.

★ If you’ve ever wondered what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex like to do for fun (and who hasn’t?), she has answers for you. In a video that accompanied her ‘Variety Power of Women’ cover, Megan Markle talked about the entertainment she and her family turn to for amusement. The vid begins with the words: “Hi, I’m Meghan, and I play a mean game of Scrabble!” She goes on to say that she’s “very good at Jeopardy”, loves to cook and makes “a really solid Bolognese sauce.” She says her favorite rom-com of all time is “When Harry Met Sally”, but “put Julia Roberts in anything, and I’m going to be a fan of those too”. When asked what she’s been watching lately with Prince Harry, she says that once the kids are in bed, and she has “played a little Wordle”, they occasionally turn on the TV, and “do endless searching until you get tired of searching, you don’t watch anything!” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mvz8n36z

★ 96-year-old Dick Van Dyke was spotted last week handing out money to homeless people looking for work at the Malibu Community Labor Exchange. The “Mary Poppins” star is said to be a big fan of the nonprofit and frequently returns there to help those who are job hunting. Dressed in a long-sleeved white shirt, gray sweatpants and black slip-on shoes, Van Dyke was handing out $5 bills and chatting with those who came to seek help. He was heard saying: “Whenever I have some 5s, I come by.” A staffmember at the center said the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” star first started coming to the exchange during the height of the pandemic in May 2021.

QUIT YOUR DAY JOB:
Forget “quiet-quitting” – these people are “quit-quitting”. A recent study from Lever found that 65% of Gen Zers (ages up to 24) plan to leave their job by the end of the year, and 40% of workers of any age say they’ll quit in the coming months. Employees from all generations have noted burnout, a lack of advancement opportunities and flexibility, and the absence of child care as reasons for resigning. Gen Z aren’t the only ones who want better, but they are the generation that is most likely to ask for it. According to the Lever report, they have different principles. Feeling that their job is doing something positive is critical for younger workers. The survey found that 42% would rather be at a company that gives them a sense of purpose than one that pays more, while only 40% of millennials and 32% of Gen Xers said the same. For those thinking about leaving a job, Elizabeth Lintelman, director of career services at American Public Education Inc., advises you weigh the decision carefully. She said: “If you’re just leaving because you think the grass is greener on the other side without doing due diligence and research, you’re gonna find yourself in the same position months from now.”
(She’s right…and if you’re going to be in the same position in a few months anyway, you might as well quit and get a few weeks off!)
(Yes, with some of the Gen Zers we’ve hired around here, lack of child care really turned out to be a problem. You can take that any way you like!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Most people would rather forget the heights of the pandemic — but this mom has immortalized it with her baby’s name. Jodi Cross, of Bedfordshire, England, found out she was pregnant with her first daughter during the second coronavirus lockdown in 2021 — after a year spent trying to start a family. She and her husband Rob chose to name their newborn, who arrived Nov. 28, 2021, ‘Lockie’. Yup, short for ‘Lockdown’, because they’re happy to remember that time in their lives. (I’m just gonna trust that her middle name isn’t ‘Nessa’!)
➢ A group of restaurant employees dressed as Power Rangers were real-life superheroes last Friday. Staff at NōKA Ramen in Oakland CA, where they serve a cocktail called “The Noka Rangers,” came to a woman’s rescue after she rushed into the eatery trying to escape from a man. A Twitter thread spelled out the story, saying: “I’m at a ramen shop owned by Thai people in Oakland dressed as power rangers, when a woman comes rushing in saying she wasn’t safe — and a man came running in after her and puts her in a chokehold…the black power ranger (the manager with a kickass bob) and the yellow ranger, told the man to leave,” the thread went on. “He swung at them. This is when all rangers yelled, ‘Huey!’ (a Thai expression meaning ‘WTF’). We’re trying to call the cops. Patrons are shaking & crying. The pink power ranger (hostess) tells us our food is free. The man…starts picking up (things) to throw at the windows. I, for some reason, start wolfing down my ramen. Next, the Yellow Ranger grabbed the man by the collar and dragged him out of the restaurant…More swings are swung, more power rangers pile onto the man at the door…I tell the hostess we’re paying her for our meal & double the tip. The Black Power Ranger manager explains that they are “beta testing these costumes, but we wore the right outfit tonight.” NōKA Ramen posted a snap of their Power Rangers, with the caption: “Our NōKA Rangers were real life heroes last night…Like our heroic namesakes, it’s not just the powers and costumes that give us strength. It’s who and what we are inside that empowers us.” (I would have a Power Rangers joke here, but it seems ‘Super Megaforced’!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/88hnkzd8

DID YOU KNOW?
Do women have better memories than men? Psychology textbooks and science books have made repeated claims that women remember more words than men, but finally, we have data confirming it. Researchers at the University of Bergen found that “the female advantage” when it comes to vocabulary and its use “is consistent across time and life span, but it is also relatively small.” (Huh?)

BS CHRONOMETER 10.21.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Back to the Future Day”, This is the date that ‘Marty McFly’ and ‘Doc Brown’ travelled to the future (from 1985 to 2015) in their DeLorean time machine, in Stephen Spielberg’s “Back To The Future: Part II.”
• “International Day of the Nacho”, celebrating the popular snack food that originated in Mexico. Created in 1943 by Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Anaya at the “Victory Club” restaurant in Piedras Negras, original nachos consisted of fried tortilla chips covered with melted cheese and jalapeño peppers.
• “Babbling Day”, a day of tolerance for those who run off at the mouth. (And yet, despite the look on my face, they’re still talking…)
• “Garbanzo Bean Day”, celebrating the legume also known as the chickpea. They can be eaten cold in salads or cooked in stews. They’re also the basis of the popular dip hummus.
• “Pumpkin Cheesecake Day”, a seasonal dish traditionally made with a graham cracker crust and a pumpkin purée cheesecake filling.
• “Reptile Awareness Day”, to raise awareness that habitat-loss and the threat of extinction are significant concerns in the world of reptilian life. (And hopefully, we can come up with a way to provide some gator-aid…)
• “Mammography Day”, observed on the 3rd Friday in October, “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. On this day, or sometime this month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment.

SATURDAY-
• “INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY”. The annual celebration of one of the more useful keys on the keyboard (Unlike ‘Scroll Lock’). Today, you’re encouraged to make use of the CAPS LOCK key on your keyboard or keypad. (But remember, the day is not called “ALL CAPS ALL DAY” day…)
• “International Stuttering Awareness Day”, originated in 1998 to raise public awareness of the millions who suffer from the speech disorder. LINK: http://www.stutteringhelp.org
• “Nut Day”. Ask anyone to name a nut, and most will say ‘peanut’, which isn’t a nut at all, but a legume. Definition of a nut: “A hard, dry, indehiscent fruit formed from 2 or more carpels but containing only 1 seed.” It’s one of nature’s most perfect foods. (BTW, ‘indehiscent’ means “not splitting open to release the seeds when ripe”)
• “Smart is Cool Day”, a day to celebrate those who are often labeled ‘egghead’ or ‘smarty-pants’. If there’s ever a time to show off your IQ test results, this is probably it.
• “Clean Up the Earth Day”, exactly 6 months after Earth Day, this is a day to reflect on the progress that has been made to make a cleaner world in the past half-year, and a day to redouble efforts to make the world a cleaner place in the future.
• “National Color Day”,  to learn how colors can affect both body and mind, and to encourage us to learn about how colors can influence mood, emotions, productivity, and behavior. (Sounds pretty black and white to me…)
• “Eat a Pretzel Day”, Soft or hard, twisted into a knot or straight, large or small, salted or plain, served with mustard or cheese—there are many types of pretzels and ways to eat them. (And eat them we shall!)

SUNDAY-
• “Mother-in-Law Day”, There’s a common assumption that they are unappreciated, joked about, and generally maligned. That might not be the case, but most of the time they aren’t honored as they deserve. Today, we honor mothers-in-law “for their contributions to the success of families and for their good humor in enduring bad jokes.” (What’s your best one? Whoops – there I go again…)
• “Canning Day”, honoring the birth of French chef/chemist Nicolas Appert, who came up with the concept of sealing perishable food in jars. For this, he is known as “the father of canning”, but he also came up with many other inventions … including the bouillon cube.
• “TV Talk Show Host Day”, celebrating those ‘gifted with the personality and intellect to bring out the best in their guests’. It’s an annual observance on the birth anniversary of iconic talk show host Johnny Carson in 1925. (Who’s today’s best?)
• “Croc Day”, They’re everywhere, from college campuses to fashion runways, on celebrity feet and in the garden. And why not? They’re versatile, vibrant, and most of all, comfortable. (And NEVER the butt of any jokes…)
• “Used Car Dealership Day”, marking the opening of the world’s first used car dealership on this day in London, England in 1897. (“What do I have to do to put you in this car today?”)
• “Slap Your Irritating Co-Worker Day”, the one day each year when those who have an irritating co-worker don’t have to hold back, and have an excuse to slap the person they just can’t stand. (We’re kidding! Honest! HR told us we are!)
• “Boston Cream Pie Day”, it’s is not actually a pie, but a cake, although it is served in wedges like a pie. It is made of 2 round layers of sponge cake or white cake, a thick vanilla custard filling, and a chocolate glaze or icing. (‘Scuse me while I wipe up that bit of drool there…)
