BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE*** ★ Emmy-winning actor Leslie Jordan, best known for his roles in “Will & Grace,” “American Horror Story” and “Hearts Afire,” has died. He was 67. Jordan was driving in Hollywood Monday morning and crashed into the side of a building, after suffering a suspected medical emergency. Jordan was a veteran actor whose credits also included “The Help,” “The Cool Kids” and “Call Me Kat,” which is currently airing its third season on Fox. In 2006, he won the Emmy Award for guest actor in a comedy series for his work on “Will & Grace,” on which he played Karen’s sexually ambiguous, socialite frenemy ‘Beverly Leslie’. In 2020, Jordan became a social media phenomenon, gaining millions of Instagram followers due to his humorous videos posted throughout the pandemic.

★ A new “Star Wars” movie is in the works at Lucasfilm, courtesy of writer Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, according to reports. At this point, no script has been written yet, but Lindelof is reported to be co-writing the project. Lindelof is best known as the co-creator of “Lost,” and has experience in space — just not the galaxy far, far away. He produced J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot “Star Trek” and co-wrote the sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Obaid-Chinoy is already part of the Disney family, having directed several episodes of “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+. No official comment from Lucasfilm yet.

★ The “House of the Dragon” bosses are promising the second season will deliver more of the thrills and spills familiar to the millions of Thrones fans tuning in, along with more humor along the lines of the original series. Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal said that producers deliberately slowed down the narrative for the first season, to ensure viewers were invested in the new characters. Quote: “We will get to the spectacle. But you have to understand these people’s complexities before they’re thrown into war.” Condal promises there will be more lighthearted moments too in the next season, when the writers introduce “natural pathways into moments of levity” in the drama.

★ Tim Burton says he’s done with Disney. The filmmaker shared his thoughts during an interview with Deadline, saying that he doesn’t plan to work with the company in the future after directing the 2019 “Dumbo” remake. Dumbo included the star-studded cast of Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Eva Green, and Michael Keaton. Burton said that he “started out” with Disney, but was “hired and fired like several times throughout my career there”, and that’s why he believes his “days with Disney are done, I realized that I was Dumbo, that I was working in this horrible big circus and I needed to escape.” The “Beetlejuice” director also said that Disney is currently focused on Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars content, saying the company has “gotten to be very homogenized” with “less room for different types of things.” Burton also said that he’d never work on a Marvel film, because he “can only deal with one universe, l can’t deal with a multi-universe.”

★ Another person close to the royal family has added their voice to those criticizing “The Crown”, ahead of the 5th season’s arrival next month on Netflix. The Times quotes an unnamed female friend of the royal family, who attended the Queen’s private committal service at Windsor last month, as slamming the streamer’s editorial decisions, saying they are “vilifying the royal family. It is vicious. It’s as if they’re trying to destroy the royal family.” Of Prince Harry’s current big-budget partnership with Netflix, she added: “If I had my family being vilified like that, I wouldn’t take a penny [from Netflix].” This follows a number of others speaking out in the lead-up to the new series, which will cover a number of events in the mid-1990s, including the marriage breakup of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The streamer has included a disclaimer to The Crown’s season 5 trailer, stating the show is “inspired by real events”, but is a “fictional dramatization”.

SHOOTING THE BULL
DOWNGRADED:
A new study says that girls routinely get higher grades than boys. And this bias against boys could mean the difference between passing and failing in some subjects, and keep them from begin accepted into college or getting certain jobs. The results, published in the British Journal of Sociology of Education, show that in standardized tests, which are marked anonymously, girls typically outperformed boys in humanities, languages and reading skills, while boys did better in maths. But when grades were awarded by teachers, girls did better than boys in all subjects. The authors of the study feel that teachers unconsciously reward students who exhibit traditional female behavior, such as quietness and neatness, because those students make teaching easier. They also suggest that inflated grades in maths are a way of trying to encourage girls, who are sometimes seen as weaker in this subject.
(Maybe they should think about teaching boys to shut up, once in a while!)
(Well, at least it’s nice to know that when I flunked all those classes, it wasn’t anything personal!)

THE WEDDING IS ‘OUTBACK’:
The family of late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin is opening its iconic Australia Zoo grounds for couples wishing to pop the question or get married. Bindi Irwin, herself a TV personality and conservationist, and her husband Chandler were hitched at the Sunshine Coast venue in March 2020. Her parents Steve and Terri Irwin actually met at the zoo and also married there in 1992. The website for the facility, known for its lush grounds and exotic scenery, says: “Whether you are looking for a small, intimate experience or a larger scale event, Australia Zoo is the perfect location for your wedding celebrations.” Couples can choose from a number of packages to plan their big day to perfection…
• “The Enchanting Elopement” package is available for up to 40 guests and is also suitable for vow renewals.
• “The Closest Thing To Heaven” ceremony package gives brides the chance to walk down the aisle with kangaroos jumping past and exchange vows underneath gum trees.
• “The Serengeti Safari” ceremony package gives access to the African savanna plains, where white rhinoceros, giraffes, zebras, and meerkats roam freely.
• And for those who are yet to pop the question, there are special packages available to create a unique proposal experience at the zoo.
All packages include a personal wedding planner to help curate the event.
(I thought that’s what a mother-in-law does!)
(My wedding wasn’t actually AT a zoo – but it came pretty close to being one!)

AT YOUR DISPOSAL:
More than 5 billion phones will be thrown away in 2022, more than enough to stretch all the way around the equator, according to a new report from the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum. If stacked flat on top of each other, the phones would make a tower over 30,000 miles (48,280km) tall — 120 times higher than the orbit of the International Space Station and reaching an eighth of the way to the Moon. And it’s no wonder. A survey across 6 countries found that the average household owns 74 electrical products, including phones, tablets, laptops, electric tools, hair dryers, and toasters. Of these 74, on average 13 were being hoarded, 9 were left unused, and 4 of them were broken.
(…and no one can ever find the one that they’re looking for!)
(Only 4 were broken? Does no one have kids?)

DID YOU KNOW?
A team of Japanese researchers has successfully grown mature hair follicles in a lab, a big advancement in the battle against hair loss. Scientists from Yokohama National University generated hair follicles in petri dishes using embryonic skin cells from mice cultured in a special type of gel. In the lab, the hair shafts grew to 3 millimeters over the course of 23 days. (So now we have ‘near beer’, ‘meatless meat’, and ‘prepared hair’?)
