Ahhh, Some BS to Look Forward to In the Morning!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
(***UPDATE***) ★ Angela Lansbury, the London-born actress whose career spanned 8 decades and included hits in film (“The Manchurian Candidate”), TV (“Murder, She Wrote”) and theater (“Sweeney Todd”), has died at age 96. Her family announced she died early Tuesday “peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles.” One of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Lansbury first rose to fame by nabbing Academy Award nominations for her first films roles, in 1944’s “Gaslight” and 1945’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” A private family ceremony will be held at a date to be determined. Angela Lansbury would have turned 97 on Sunday.

★ Kim Kardashian is opening her wallet to pay for increased security at her kids’ private school — because Kanye West has blasted the name of the school to the world, creating a heightened security risk. Ye has been trying to get their 4 kids to enroll at his Donda Academy, and Instagrammed the name of the school where the kids are currently enrolled, and that means any random person now knows exactly where the school is located. In addition, West made a lot of people angry over the last week, wearing his “White Lives Matter” shirt, and making an incendiary comment about school shootings. Sources with direct knowledge say the school recently hired additional security as a precaution, and Kardashian is footing the bill.

★ Conan O’Brien can break out the bubbly — because he just made a fortune on his oceanfront home. He had listed the property in Carpinteria CA, just south of Santa Barbara, for $16.6 million in July. The 2,400 square foot pad is just steps from the sand, and underwent an extensive remodel after he and his wife Liza bought it in 2015…for a comparatively paltry $7.9 million. The house has panoramic ocean, island and coastline views, a large deck with a built-in BBQ and private stairs down to the beach. The main house has 2 bedrooms, a gym and a detached, 2-bedroom guest house with a wraparound deck.

★ On “Good Morning America”, Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik spoke about the pressures of stepping up to the podium to share hosting duties in the wake of Alex Trebek’s passing. The iconic game show has aired for 39 seasons, but this will be the first full season without its longtime host. Jennings has led the charge since September and will continue until January, when Bialik will take over through the end of the season. The former “Jeopardy!” champ said that hosting is harder than being a contestant, because “you basically have to do everything the contestants do, plus manage the game for them, plus manage the game for the home viewer.” For Bialik, the hardest part of hosting the show is learning to tone down her excitement “and not make faces” when contestants get the answer right.

★ Jamie Lee Curtis’ character might’ve been offended by being called old in the first “Freaky Friday” but now? She wants to be “the old grandma who switches places” in a sequel. She first got the hopes of fans up last week, when she said she’d “Absolutely” do another Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan. Then, while guesting on “The View” Monday, Curtis revealed that she’s trying to make it happen. When host Sara Haines gave her the floor “to pitch Disney” if she wanted to, Curtis admitted she already has. Quote: “I’ve already written to my friends at Disney…I’m in their new ‘Haunted Mansion’ movie, so I’m back in (the family).”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Taylor Swift – Her upcoming song ‘Lavender Haze’ is about how she and boyfriend Joe Alwyn tackle negativity from the outside world. Quote: “I happened upon the phrase “Lavender Haze” when I was watching Mad Men…it’s a common phrase used in the ’50s where they would describe being in love…when you’re in the lavender haze, you’ll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud…we’ve had to dodge weird rumours, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it.” LINK: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjZfqKnrKHk/
• Megan Thee Stallion — headlined Saturday at San Diego’s TwitchCon and, keeping with the theme of the gamer-friendly livestream service’s event, twerked with ‘Master Chief’ from “Halo”. The bizarre moment occurred during a performance of ‘Freak Nasty’, when she was joined onstage by the video game character. She’ll also serve as both host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” Oct. 15.
• Coolio – His hit ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ has returned to the charts following his death Sept. 28. The song re-entered America’s Billboard Hot R B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at #16, and Hot Rap Songs chart at #11.
• Blink-182 — surprised fans by announcing in a hilarious (but definitely not-family friendly) video that they are reuniting for a 2023 world tour and will drop the new song ‘Edging’ on Friday. Travis Barker, Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge will be coming together for the first time in nearly 10 years to perform in Latin America, North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. A new album is also on the way. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc6j95e8
• Queens of the Stone Age — A new album from them has seemingly been confirmed by Eagles Of Death Metal’s Jesse Hughes. Eagles Of Death Metal were founded by Hughes and Queens Of The Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme, and in an Instagram livestream, Hughes indicated that the group “just did” a new album. The band has recently been revealing tour plans for 2023.
• HARDY – His second studio album “the mockingbird & THE CROW” will drop Jan. 20. On social media, he gave fans a health update following his bus crash, saying he’s “feeling much better, still a little bit banged up”, and announced 3 new songs: ‘here lies country music’, ‘the mockingbird & THE CROW’ and ‘TRUCK BED’. All are on YouTube. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3yn8pj44
• Lainey Wilson — will be honored as Breakout Artist of the Year as part of the 2022 CMT Artists of the Year ceremony this Friday in Nashville. She’ll be recognized for her success as a new artist, including back-to-back #1 hits, powerhouse duets and a role in the new season of “Yellowstone”.
• Keith Urban — paid tribute to Loretta Lynn at his Nashville concert Friday night. The 2 had a friendship dating back to the 2005 CMT Awards when Urban went as her date at her request. Urban honored her with performances of ‘Blue Eyed Kentucky Girl’ and ‘You’re Lookin’ at Country’, as pictures of her were displayed on the large screens. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2np33pce

SHOOTING THE BULL

SAY, ABOUT PAY:
One of the biggest complaints among job hunters these days, according to a poll, is a lack of information on salaries being offered. Among those who have sought employment in the past 5 years, an employer’s failure to disclose pay levels followed only being turned down due to “no experience” and the interview process being too long as most-mentioned complaints. And yes, maybe companies should be more forthright about what they are paying their employees. The same study found that 55% of workers say they’d be OK with their colleagues knowing what they earn. 31% said they’re neutral on the idea, with just 9% unhappy about that idea. 73% agree that greater transparency over salaries would make workplaces fairer.
(I’m fine with telling co-workers how much I make. Just, please don’t tell the government!)
(Why not share salary info? I’m always up for a good laugh!)

TRENDENCIES:
☞ “Quiet quitting” was the big buzzword a month or 2 back, but the new thing to do is to “let it rot”. Sounds nice. What is it? Let it rot, or “bai lan” in Mandarin, is the latest work trend from China that’s appealing to disgruntled employees worldwide. It is described as the mindset of “leaning into self-indulgence and away from life expectations that seem neither meaningful nor attainable”. In work terms, ‘let it rot’ is like quiet quitting’s more destructive brother. Rather than encouraging employees to complete the basic requirements of their job description – and nothing extra – in a bid to insert boundaries, ‘let it rot’ is about tapping out altogether. It is believed to come from the bai lan basketball tactic, when a losing team stops trying to win in order to more rapidly bring a game to its end. (They may THINK it’s the latest work trend, but [***afternoon guy***] has been doing it for years !)
☞ And how about the latest dating trend? You’ve heard of “cuffing season”, the time of year where singles couple up with short-term partners for cosiness and comfort to get them through the cold and lonely winter months. Now comes “winter coating”. That’s when people hit up those they’ve dated, hooked up with, or even been in a full-blown relationship with, to convert them into a seasonal partner for the winter. Just as we brush off our winter coats and shove them to the back of the closet at the first sight of sun, ex-lovers can be company, then cast off as soon as spring kicks in. The experts at the dating site “Inner Circle” say that winter coating is set to rise this year as singles look for old flames who can share the increased costs of living. (They’ll be reminded soon enough why these people are “ex” lovers!)

FAST FOOD INDEED:
What fast food restaurants have the best drive-thrus? According to a recent study carried out in the US, Taco Bell led the pack in terms of speed, with an average time of 221 seconds, followed by Dunkin’ Donuts, KFC and Arby’s. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. When you factor in the time that cars spend waiting in line, Chick-fil-A is the clear leader, with an average of about 107 seconds. McDonald’s came in second at 118 seconds, followed by Taco Bell and Arby’s. The annual Drive-Thru Report, produced by QSR and Intouch Insight found that in spite of a shortage of workers, drive-thrus have gotten nearly 10 seconds faster compared to last year.
(That doesn’t help when I get home and I’ve got no ketchup – or French fries!)
(So, Taco Bell is fastest to hand over your order? It’s funny, because Taco Bell is also the fastest to…well…YOU know!)

BEST HALLOWEEN CANDY:
According to rankings by 10 of the leading “expert” websites, these Halloween candies are rated the highest…
1. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups:  The taste that truly exemplifies the holiday. (And it’s the one Dads should be most concerned with “checking” before the kids sample their haul…!)
2. Twix:  It’s a cookie, it’s a chocolate, it’s a caramel…they are everything one could possibly want in one candy. (Except peanut butter…)
3. Sour Patch Kids:  First they’re sour, then they’re sweet…and they have long been one of the best fruit-flavored sugary sweets for good reason.
4. Snickers:  Like Twix, but different – this 3-layered chocolate delicacy is the heartiest of all chocolate bars, featuring nougat, caramel, nuts, and chocolate. (Every food group covered!)
5. Starbursts:  Yes, they made the list, but it should be noted that experts are choosy with their flavors. Orange is out of the question, and pink is considered the holy grail.

DID YOU KNOW?
A new feature on the iPhone 14 alerts police to car crashes — or at least that’s what it’s supposed to do. Police in Ohio were called to the Kings Island amusement park 6 times last month when the new safety feature automatically alerted authorities after mistaking the quick and jerky movements of a roller coaster for a car accident. The iPhone 14’s new crash detection feature is made to be on alert for signs of a crash, including rapid deceleration or a sudden stop, automatically dialling 911 and sharing the location of the device if the user doesn’t shut off an alarm within 10 seconds. The feature has also set off false alarms at Kings Island and Six Flags Great America near Chicago.

• “Farmers Day”, honoring all current farmers and those throughout history. Today, we recognize all that they have done to improve our lives. (And when was the last great country song about farmers?)
• “Gumbo Day”, a day to indulge in some good old Louisiana-style cooking. Gumbo is a rich stew usually filled with meat, shellfish, celery, peppers, and onions, served over a bed of rice.
• “World Arthritis Day”, to raise awareness of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs), and to encourage people with RMDs to seize every opportunity to improve their quality of life.
• “Emergency Nurses Day”, a part of “Emergency Nurses Week”. Today, we say thank you to them for their hard work, dedication, service, and commitment.
• “Arthritis Day”, to raise awareness of the existence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, often referred to as RMDs. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/7unp2xm8
• “International Moment of Frustration Scream Day” when we’re encouraged to go outside at 12 noon and bellow for 30 seconds to vent our frustrations. (That way when they’ve locked you up, you’ll feel completely cleansed.)
• “Pulled Pork Day”, although it can certainly be made in a slow cooker, the traditional way to do pulled pork is to slow-smoke it over wood. Today, we celebrate this classic Texas-style dish. (Fun fact: In 2016, Florida-based restaurant chain Sonny’s BBQ set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Serving of Pulled Pork” — a hefty 2,012 pounds/913kg)
• “Own Business Day”, business owners don’t just run their business – they live it. They are the economic backbones of our communities, creating jobs and serving as role models. Today, we celebrate them by promoting and giving them extra awareness. (And by not shopping on Amazon…)
