BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
(***UPDATE***) ★ Loretta Lynn, the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” whose gutsy lyrics and twangy, down-home vocals made her a queen of country music for 7 decades, has died at 90. Her family said in a statement that she died Tuesday at her home in Tennessee. As a songwriter, she crafted a persona of a defiantly tough woman, a contrast to the stereotypical image of most female country singers. The Country Music Hall of Famer wrote fearlessly about sex and love, cheating husbands, divorce and birth control. Her biggest hits included ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’, ‘You Ain’t Woman Enough’, ‘The Pill’ and ‘Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)’. She was known for appearing in floor-length, wide gowns with elaborate embroidery or rhinestones, many created by her longtime personal assistant and designer Tim Cobb. A memorial will be announced later.

★ While Will Smith has been mostly been staying out of the limelight since he smacked presenter Chris Rock at the ceremony earlier this year, he has a new project in the works that’s already creating buzz. Smith’s first post-Oscars film, “Emancipation,” had a special screening hosted by the NAACP during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference on Oct. 1. The drama stars Smith as a runway slave named ‘Peter’ who found asylum in Louisiana and winds up joining the Union Army. The film earned early praise at the event. Smith, who made an appearance at the conference, called it, “A film about freedom. This is a film about resilience. This is a film about faith.” Emancipation hits theaters Dec. 2.

★ There’s another exciting new trailer for Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, ahead of its Nov. 11 release date. The longer preview gives a better look at the mysterious new ‘Black Panther’, who appears to be a woman in a brand-new suit. Could it be ‘Shuri’, ‘Nakia’, ‘Okoye’, or someone else taking up the mantle? There are also extended looks at ‘Namor’ and his underwater kingdom of Atlantis. And ‘M’Baku’ reveals that the Atlanteans call Namor “the feather serpent god,” and that killing him would “risk eternal war.” There’s also a brief shot of the new hero ‘Ironheart’ flying in her makeshift ‘Iron Man’-inspired armor. ★ King Charles is poking fun at his “bursting pen” incident. On Monday, during Charles’ first public engagement with Camilla, the queen consort, he joked about how unpredictable pens can be while signing a visitor’s book at a meeting in Scotland. In video footage, Charles is seen signing the book before he hands his wife the pen, and says with a subtle laugh: “These things are so temperamental.” The king’s remark follows the mishap he had a few days after he acceded the throne, when during a ceremony, he had an unfortunate experience with a leaky pen after the “bloody thing” (as he called it) got ink on his hands. The clip quickly went viral.

★ Seth Rogen has an unusual smoking buddy in mind. Speaking at the 10th annual Hilarity for Charity carnival, the comedian shared that Barbra Streisand is at the top of his list of celebs he’d like to share a joint with. According to Rogen: “She told me she smoked weed with Peter Sellers. Which is amazing. Truly remarkable.” Rogen said that Babs has “the coolest story of someone smoking weed”, because he doesn’t “know anyone who’s smoked weed with anyone cooler than Peter Sellers.” Rogen and Streisand were co-stars in the 2012 film “Guilt Trip”, but according to the legendary singer, she’s unlikely to light one up any time soon. In an interview last year, she said she tried it once, and didn’t like the way it made her feel, so she never did it again.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Lizzo – has been invited to take a private tour of James Madison’s historical Montpelier estate in Virginia, after making history by playing the 4th US President’s crystal flute last week at a DC show. There’s some hope she might play the flute again during a visit to the founding father’s home.
• Ed Sheeran – has announced dates for his first stateside swing in almost 5 years. The string of 21 stadium shows, called “The Mathematics Tour,” is set to kick off on May 6 in Arlington TX. He released a tour teaser in which he is sitting in math class. LINK:  https://tinyurl.com/mr2e2kt5
• U2 – Bono will release his memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” on Nov. 1.  He’ll also head out on a book tour, promising “an evening of words, music & some mischief”, hitting 14 cities in North America and Europe. The book draws its title from its 40 chapters, each of which is named after a U2 song. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/76p8w9fx
• Ringo Starr – The 82-year-old has been forced to cancel several shows after testing positive for COVID-19. He fell ill over the weekend and cancelled 2 shows, but now a spokesperson says he had headed home to recuperate and the tour is “on hold”. Affected are concerts in Winnipeg MB, Saskatoon SK, Lethbridge AB, and Abbotsford and Penticton BC.
• Lindsey Buckingham – His European tour is ending early, due to “ongoing health issues,” according to a statement on his socials. The 73-year-old was midway through a run of rescheduled UK shows, which were originally set to take place earlier in the year, but were postponed when he contracted COVID-19. No word on what health issue is behind the latest postponement.
• Carrie Underwood – Since her collab with Jason Aldean on ‘If I Didn’t Love You’ went #1 and won several awards, she says she receives invitations to duet with others “every week”. But she says the collab “has to make sense” musically. Quote: “Sometimes I don’t get why they would ask me. I don’t make any sense with that person. But it’s all good. I feel like it’s a compliment.”
• Lauren Alaina – for just the second time in Grand Ole Opry history, a dog stepped into the hallowed circle, and she helped. Bush’s Beans spokes-dog Duke took the stage in celebration of a new partnership between the Opry and Bush’s Beans. Alaina introduced Duke, known for his one-liner “Roll that beautiful bean footage.” The last time a dog made an Opry debut was in 2006 when Lassie graced the stage.
• Parker McCollum — will once again perform at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2023, but this time, he’ll kick off the festivities. The Texas native will close out the Opening Day celebration on Feb. 28. He made his RodeoHouston debut March 12, when he took the stage in front of more than 70,000 fans at NRG Stadium. SHOOTING THE BULL

FLOWER CITY:
An incredible flower-shaped sustainable city is being built, which is being called “the most walkable on earth”. Plans are for the city, called “XZERO”, to be the world’s largest net-zero community, allowing 100,000 Kuwaiti residents to live in balance with nature. Construction is set to start in 2024 on the city, which will provide food and energy security while promoting a green “circular” economy in an eco-friendly destination for living, working and visiting. Designed in a flower-shaped pattern, which limits vehicular access, XZERO maximizes landscape ratio, to create a very walkable city. The central area is surrounded by “hubs”, dedicated to education, entertainment and medical facilities. More than 65% of the land area consists of open spaces, such as sports fields, courtyards, permeable pavements, and landscape areas. UAE-based designer URB says these areas will promote social activities, biodiversity and microclimate optimization which will also mitigate the effects of rising temperatures and urban heat islands.
(But before you give too many props to UAE designers, remember, they’re the ones who also came up with the idea of an indoor ski hill…in a mall…in the middle of the desert!)
(Big whoop. I’d say 65% THIS area is made of open spaces too. The problem: There used to be factories there!)

ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE:
The old saying is that “it starts from the top”. And that’s apparently absolutely correct, when it comes to creating a toxic workplace. Horrible bosses can create horrible staff, according to a new study. Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK studied 323 employees, and reported that 68% of workers who experienced hostile behavior from a senior member of staff then witnessed interpersonal aggression within the general workforce. Horrible bosses were also linked to employees facing emotional exhaustion and job insecurity. Study authors point to a “reciprocal relationship” between bosses and junior staff, where bullied employees feel the only way to get ahead is to abuse others. A toxic atmosphere of heightened competition is created as a result. Inappropriate language, sexual harassment, outbursts, humiliation and misuse of power were all examples of hostile behavior.
(And that’s just at the staff Christmas party!)
(I know what they’re talking about – and I’m self-employed!)

AUTUMN OF MY DISCONTENT:
THIS is the perfect time of year to get your priorities in order and set yourself up for a successful 2023, according to a survey. The OnePoll survey of 2,000 Americans ages 25-54 found that parents see fall as a time to get back into routine (73%), and to fulfill priorities like “getting my schedule organized,” “getting the kids settled in school” or “winterizing my home or cars.” Nearly two-thirds of respondents see fall as a time to readjust their priorities for the coming year (64%). Good thing, too, because only 20% say they are on top of routine doctor visits, and nearly half (47%) said that being busy means they often out off their personal health care – especially parents (50%).
(You heard that right – we prioritize looking after the car more than looking after ourselves!)
(I do like the part about “readjusting priorities” now, so I don’t have to be bothered with those irritating New Year’s resolutions in a couple months!)

REDUCE YOUR GROCERY BILL WITHOUT SACRIFICING NUTRITION:
Soaring grocery prices mean people everywhere are looking for ways to save money. Here are some strategies to save on your grocery bill…
☞ Buy seasonal products: These days, that could mean cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, parsnips, winter squash, beets, apples and pears. (And apple pie, of course!)
☞ Buy frozen:  Frozen options of fresh, off-season produce can be significantly cheaper than imported vegetables and fruit.
☞ Trade meat for beans:  Beans and lentils are significantly cheaper than meat, poultry and fish. They’re also incredibly nutritious. You can also add tofu to your weekly menu.
☞ Replace salmon with sardines:  If you rely on salmon for omega-3s, try canned sardines. By weight, sardines are half the price of canned or fresh salmon. Eat sardines on whole grain crackers, serve them on a bed of veggies, sauté them in olive oil and garlic, or add them to pasta.
☞ Add sunflower seeds:  They’re way cheaper than nuts and pumpkin seeds, and are an excellent source of vitamin E, an antioxidant needed for healthy immune and brain function.
☞ Reduce food waste:  Create a weekly meal plan, so you only buy what you need (This can also help you save money by breaking the habit of eating out). Freeze leftovers, and use vegetable peels and scraps to make stocks and broths. (Our way of making sure no food is thrown out: Get teenagers!)
(Also, don’t let your chocolate-loving wife come along to shop any time near Halloween!)

DID YOU KNOW?
The world’s largest bobblehead has been unveiled at a store in Pennsylvania. Bargain retailer Ollie’s says it broke the world record with a 16.5 foot (5m), 600-pound (272kg) fully-functioning bobblehead replica of its mustachioed mascot, ‘Ollie’. Crafting the huge Ollie bobblehead took 4 months and required over 10½ gallons (40 liters) of paint. The bobblehead was revealed at the company’s flagship store in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as part of the company’s 40th birthday celebration.
