BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ John Stamos says that his alcoholism got so bad that he actually doesn’t remember being on set to film his role in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” He appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” to promote his new memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” saying he forgot he even booked a part in the film — and was reminded the day after his arrest for driving under the influence that he had to go to Toronto for filming. In previous interviews, Stamos has said his 2015 DUI arrest convinved him it was time to get sober. But it didn’t happen instantly. He told Stern that after he got home from jail, he “drank another bottle of wine by myself.” He entered rehab after completing shooting on the movie, and says he has “not had a drink since — 8 years ago.”
-Variety
★ Josh Peck almost went from saying, “I ain’t calling you a truther,” to, “Hold on tight, spider monkey.” It turns out that the “Drake & Josh” star auditioned to play the iconic role of ‘Edward Cullen’ in the “Twilight” franchise. And though the role would ultimately go to Robert Pattinson, Peck supposedly came close. On his podcast, the actor said to guest Taylor Lautner: “It’s like 2006? 7? They’re like, ‘Audition for this movie, Twilight, it’s based on a book it’s going to be great.’ So I send in my tape, for Edward. A month later…my manager…goes, ‘It’s down to you and 3 guys, you’re close.'” The Nickelodeon alum continued, laughing: “I’m like, ‘Really?’ I hadn’t even had a tummy tuck yet, I’m like, ‘There’s no way. He’s got to be so shirtless, it’s not going to happen.’ Spoiler alert—didn’t get it.”
-E!
★ Kevin Costner reunited with his band Modern West for 2 sold-out two shows in Jackson WY. The recently divorced actor celebrated the shows on social media, writing: “The band and I had a truly incredible couple of nights playing at @milliondollarcowboybar. I always love to be in Jackson Hole, where the hospitality is as legendary as this honky tonk’s saddled barstools.” Video shows Costner in a cowboy hat, smiling and singing with his band in a couple of different venues. The reunion comes just over a month after the former “Yellowstone” actor settled his divorce from ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.
-Messenger
★ Meg Ryan has revealed why she took a break from Hollywood ahead of her highly-anticipated return in “What Happens Later”. She told People: “I felt like there’s just so many other parts of my experience as a human being I wanted to develop.” Ryan said that it’s nice to be able to think of acting “as a job and not a lifestyle. And that is a great way of navigating it for me.” She took an 8-year hiatus from acting following 2015’s “Ithaca”, before announcing her return last year for her latest film, which she will also direct.

★ There was “never” a moment in which “The Crown” was going to show the car crash that led to Princess Diana’s tragic death. In a new interview, showrunner and executive producer Peter Morgan said: “Oh, God, we were never going to show the crash. Never.” In fact, he admitted that he “dreaded writing Princess Diana into the series, and even considered avoiding her entirely.” The last season of “The Crown,” covering the years 1997-2005, will be split into 2 parts. The first half drops Nov. 16.

★ Disney Branded Television has set the premiere dates for its 3 upcoming “Doctor Who” 60th anniversary specials. “The Star Beast,” “Wild Blue Yonder” and “The Giggle,” will debut globally on Disney+ everywhere except in the UK and Ireland, on Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. The projects will see David Tennant and Catherine Tate reunite for another adventure as the 14th Doctor and ‘Donna Temple-Noble’, coming face-to-face with a new adversary known as the ‘Toymaker’, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

SLIPPERY WHEN WET…REALLY, REALLY SLIPPERY:
Scientists have created the most water-repellent surface in the world – and they say it could get you out of some household tasks and revolutionize industry. Finnish researchers developed a mechanism to make water droplets slip off surfaces with unprecedented efficacy. We won’t go too deeply into the science here (you’re welcome), but the team from Aalto University say they took a deep dive into the slipperiness of water molecules, ultimately resulting in the creation of the world’s “slipperiest liquid surface.” What does that mean to you and I? Well, the tech could one day be used to get you out of a lot of household chores, through the creation of self-cleaning surfaces. In addition, it has great potential to be used for de-icing and anti-fogging of various materials.
(You had me at self-cleaning!)
(So, I could use it to de-fog my glasses, so I can see them slipping right off my nose?!?!)

SHEDDING NEW LIGHT ON BLACK CATS:
Today is recognized as “Black Cat Day”. But don’t bother worrying if one crosses your path – chances are, it’ll bring you GOOD luck…at least according to cat lovers. In a survey of 2,000 American cat owners, only 21% said they believe that black cats bring bad luck, while nearly twice as many (41%) associate them with good fortune. At least one black cat stereotype does hold true, though: black cats love to talk. Half of black cat caretakers describe theirs as “extremely vocal” (48%), compared to only one third (36%) of other cat owners. And people with black cats consider them just as “affectionate” (63%) as the average cat. The OnePoll survey also found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, those with a black cat are more likely than other cat owners to list Halloween as a favorite holiday (25% vs 21%) – although Christmas and Thanksgiving still took first and second place.
(Probably because their cat told them to say that!)
(I guess they didn’t ask this question, but speaking from experience, black cats are also 85% more likely to be tripped on during a human’s trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night!)

HOW YOUR FAV HALLOWEEN TREATS GOT THEIR NAMES:
➠ 3 Musketeers:  In 1932, the 3 Musketeers bar was originally 3 smaller pieces, with individual chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry mini-bars. As a result, it was given the name of the Alexandre Dumas novel. In 1945, it became a single, chocolate nougat candy bar.
➠ Milk Duds:  Intended to be balls of caramel covered in chocolate, in 1928, Hoffman and Company of Chicago struggled to create perfectly-shaped spheres. They eventually stopped trying, and the treats were given the name Milk Duds for the milk in the chocolate and caramel — and for the “dud” of their irregular appearance.
➠ Snickers:  When introduced around 1930, it was named for one of Frank Mars’ family horses. When Mars looked to export the Snickers bar to the UK, they learned the word “snickers” rhymed too easily with “knickers” – slang for underwear, so it was marketed as the “Marathon” bar – until 1990.
➠ Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups:  Harry Reese, a farmer and employee of Hershey, began selling his own chocolate and peanut butter treats (made in his basement) in 1928. He called his candies Penny Cups, and sold them for 1 cent. The name changed, presumably, when the price did.
➠ Tootsie Rolls:  Leo Hirshfield named his pseudo-chocolate candies after his daughter, Clara, nicknamed “Tootsie.” Hirshfield had a candy shop in Brooklyn, first making his hand-rolled chewy candies in 1896, with the idea of creating a form of chocolate that didn’t melt.
➠ Jolly Ranchers:  Created in 1949, they were first sold by the Jolly Rancher Company near Denver. The name symbolized friendliness and the spirit of the American West. Because they could be sold all year, Jolly Rancher hard candies became the focus of the company by the early 1950s.
➠ Starburst:  Starburst candies were first made in 1960 in the UK, and were known as Opal Fruits. Introduced in the US in 1967, they were renamed “Starburst” to reflect their juiciness and burst-like flavor. They became Starburst in the UK during the 1990s.
➠ Butterfinger:  Created by the Curtis Candy Company in 1926, the candy bar was named by the winner of a contest. With its peanut butter innards and chocolate coating, it is said to have been named after Nikola “Butterfingers” Jovanovic, a self-identified klutz. The term was used to describe someone who was clumsy. (***See “Least Popular Halloween Treats”, below***)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A man accessing his safety deposit box at a New York business ended up locked in a vault for more than 10 hours. The New York Fire Department said the man was in the vault in the basement of World Diamond Tower when employees, unaware of his presence, closed the door. Firefighters were called to the scene and were able to communicate with the man via security cams and phone. They determined the vault was on a timer lock and couldn’t be opened by employees. Firefighters attempted to cut through a concrete wall, but stopped because they feared putting the man at risk of injury. So, they decided to wait for the timer to automatically open the lock at 6:15am. The newly-freed man was examined at the scene, before being sent home. (…where he discovered that his wife had locked him out!)
➢ Washington State Police say a driver was pulled over in the high-occupancy lanes of a highway – and his passenger turned out to be a dummy. A creepy clown dummy, actually. The driver was in the HOV lanes on Interstate 405 in Renton when a trooper noticed the unusual-looking passenger. Once stopped, the cop was able to confirm the passenger was indeed a Halloween dummy, and not a real-life creepy clown. The driver was assessed a fine for improper use of HOV lanes. Washington State Patrol wrote on Facebook: “Love the Halloween vibe, but still doesn’t count”. (The cop KNEW there was something funny about that passenger!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4tfhepas

DID YOU KNOW?
Apple iPods are making a comeback — as the discontinued models are being sold on Urban Outfitters as ‘vintage’ — much to the horror of millennials. From classic to mini, different types of the MP3 player are available to purchase on the fashion website, tapping into the Y2K trends that Gen Z is loving these days. Some of the models for sale include iPod Color (4th generation), iPod (4th generation), and iPod Classic (5th generation). But nostalgia has a price. A sky-blue Apple iPod Mini (1st Generation) costs $199. Back in 2004 it sold for $249 – new.

BS CHRONOMETER 10.27.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Frankenstein Friday”, honoring Mary Shelley, the author of “Frankenstein”, and the monster from her story. Frankenstein was first published anonymously in 1818, under its original title: “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus”. And, yes, there are also “Frankenstein Days” on Oct. 25, and on Shelley’s birthdate, Aug. 30. (“Freaky”, huh?)
• “Boxer Shorts Day”, a salute to their invention on this date in 1901. (I’d normally have a “boxer shorts” joke here, but I couldn’t find any “clean ones”…)
• “Bandanna Day”, a cancer fundraiser in Australia. As it turns out, some people spell it with a double-n near the end! LINK: https://www.bandannaday.org.au/
• “Black Cat Day”, to raise awareness about low adoption rates for black cats. In spite of the fact that black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck, in many historical settings and cultures, they were actually related to positive things. Today, we salute them. (Something that they will acknowledge by remaining completely aloof…)
• “Cranky Co-Workers Day”, in honor of all the complaining and just plain cranky people you work with and have to endure all year. This is the day to let them go with it, and enjoy their misery. (Is that why everyone is being so nice to me today?)
• “Potato Day”, one of several ‘food holidays’ honoring the humble spud. This root vegetable became one of the New World’s most important discoveries. What’s the best way to cook ’em? Fries? Mashed? Baked? Au Gratin w/Gruyere & Creme Fraiche?
• “American Beer Day”, beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the United States, where about 9,000 breweries produce more than 6.4 billion gallons annually, worth over $100 million.
• “World Occupational Therapy Day”, celebrating Occupational Therapists (OTs), who enhance children and adults’ abilities to engage in daily roles and activities.
• “Navy Day”, paying tribute to all US men and women who serve as sailors. October 27, 1775 is considered by many to be the birthday of the US Navy. Officially, this celebration has been replaced by Armed Forces Day in May.
• “World Day for Audiovisual Heritage”, to raise awareness of the significance and preservation risks of recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programs). LINK: https://www.unesco.org/en/days/audiovisual-heritage

SATURDAY-
• “International Animation Day”, first proclaimed in 2002 to celebrate the art of animation. (So, if you know an animator, send a .gif!)
• “Plush Animal Lover’s Day”, a day to celebrate your stuffed animal collection. ‘Plush’ sounds so much more humane, no?
• “Wild Foods Day”, a celebration of wild plants, fruits, and vegetables. Wild foods are free of preservatives and pesticides, and eating them is part of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Wild plants now often appear on menus in gourmet and raw food restaurants. (I wonder if tomorrow is “Roughage Day…”)
• “Statue of Liberty Dedication Day”, President Grover Cleveland dedicated it on this date in 1886. The 151-Ft. statue serves as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. A gift from the people of France, it sits on what is now known as Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
• “National Chocolate Day”, yes, there was also a “Chocolate Day” in July and an “International Chocolate Day in September…don’t fight it. Here are 5 things to know about chocolate:
➢ Switzerland is one of the top countries for chocolate consumption. The Swiss consume about 10kg (22lbs.) of chocolate, per person, per year.
➢ Most cocoa comes from West Africa.
➢ Cocoa beans were used as currency by the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Perhaps this is where they saying “Money grows on trees” came from.
➢ White chocolate originates from the cocoa (cacao) plant, but it is not ‘chocolate.’
➢ Allowing chocolate to melt in your mouth produces a similar reaction to that of a passionate kiss.

SUNDAY-
• “Hermit Day”, the perfect excuse to curl up with a good book and enjoy a day of peace and quiet.
• “Cat Day” in the US, a day for cat fanatics to dote over their felines (As if they don’t the rest of the year…), and to raise public awareness of cat adoption.
• “Oatmeal Day”, a food celebration honoring the hot breakfast cereal that ‘sticks to your ribs’, as grandma used to say.
• “World Psoriasis Day”, to increase awareness of the life-long skin disorder. It’s estimated 125 million people worldwide suffer from the malady. LINK: https://ifpa-pso.com/world-psoriasis-day
• World Stroke Day”, when organizations around the world facilitate events emphasizing education, testing, and initiatives to improve the damaging effects of stroke. LINK: https://www.world-stroke.org/world-stroke-day-campaign
• “International Internet Day”, to commemorate the momentous day in history, which, to many, signifies the creation of the internet. This date in 1969, the first successful electronic message was sent. The letters ‘L’ and ‘O’ were transferred from one computer to another — before the connection crashed. (The dude was typing “LOL”????)
