BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ FX’s “Shōgun” scored 25 Emmy nominations yesterday, the most for any program for the 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. FX’s “The Bear” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” followed close behind with 23 and 21,  respectively. “True Detective: Night Country” picked up 19 nods, and “The Crown” earned 18. Shōgun earned nods in major categories such as Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Anna Sawai and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Hiroyuki Sanada. “The Bear” was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edebiri. The Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sept. 15.

★ The “Scandoval” fallout is still going strong. More than a year after Ariana Madix broke up with Tom Sandoval over his affair with Rachel “Raquel” Leviss, he is suing Madix. Sandoval accused his ex-girlfriend of “obtaining access” to explicit videos of Leviss on his phone without “authorization or permission,” Us Weekly reported. He alleges that the “Dancing With the Stars” alum made “copies” of the footage and “distributed” them to “Leviss and third parties,” in 2023. At the time, Madix had discovered Sandoval’s months-long affair with Leviss, after seeing an intimate Facetime video on his phone, which Leviss claimed he filmed without her consent.

★ Ryan Seacrest is giving “Wheel of Fortune” fans a behind-the-scenes look at his first day of filming. Taking over for the beloved Pat Sajak after 4 decades as host, in his video, Seacrest admitted he was “spinning with excitement”, and his heart was pounding. Between introducing himself to his new co-workers and getting familiar with the set, Seacrest’s enthusiasm was palpable. Seeing the iconic wheel inside the studio, he joked it is “smaller than you think,” — same as some people may find him. The new host closed out the video of his first day on set with a joyful skip through the lot. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mpk3bdsr

★ The “Rust” scene that was being rehearsed when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on set has been completely removed from the finished film. Alec Baldwin stars in the Western drama, which was being filmed in New Mexico in 2021, when a prop gun containing live rounds held by Baldwin discharged, hitting director Joel Souza and Hutchins. “People” quotes an insider as saying that the finished version of Rust does not contain that scene, after the script underwent rewrites when it later resumed filming. Cameras were not rolling when the actual shooting occurred.

★ “Flip or Flop” star Christina Hall’s husband Josh has filed for divorce after nearly 3 years of marriage. According to the filing, her husband filed for a dissolution of marriage due to “irreconcilable differences”, listing their date of separation as July 8. The document also states that Josh is requesting spousal support from Christina, who currently hosts “Christina in the Country”. The pair officially tied the knot on Oct. 6, 2021.

★ “Nutcrackers”, David Gordon Green’s new comedy starring Ben Stiller, will open the 2024 Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 5. Stiller’s first starring role since the Netflix family drama “The Meyerowitz Stories” in 2017 will have its world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall, which is filled with ordinary moviegoers (not just industry people, as in Cannes and Venice). It has also been announced that “The Deb”, Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut, will close the TIFF on Sept. 15.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Kendrick Lamar – ‘Not Like Us’ is back at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It reappeared at #1 after Lamar recently performed the song 6 times at a concert in his native LA, where a team of musicians — including Dr. Dre, YG, Tyler the Creator, Schoolboy Q and more — showed up to support the cause. The Drake-diss track originally debuted at #1 in May.
• Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Billie Eilish – are enjoying the best album sales of any artists so far this year in the US, according to Luminate‘s midyear music report. “The Tortured Poets Department” leads the pack, followed by Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard,” Bey’s “Cowboy Carter,” Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” and Swift’s “Lover.” Benson Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’ is the biggest song of the year so far.
• Prince – His planned Netflix biopic is on hold because his estate has a problem with its 9-hour length, according to a report. The 2018 deal for the doc called for a 6-hour series, but director Ezra Edelman’s final cut currently runs 3 hours longer, which the estate says violates their agreement.
• Led Zeppelin – Previously unseen live footage of the band playing live in 1973 has emerged on YouTube. A 3-minute montage from a show in Austria can been seen on the LedZepFilm channel. The footage is assembled from short clips, so the music is fragmented, but Robert Plant is clearly in a playful mood, telling the audience that Vienna “has good groupies”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mppxbpzn
• Eric Clapton – His 2015 DVD “Slowhand at 70-Live At The Royal Albert Hall” will be released Sept. 13 on 4K Ultra High Definition. It was recorded on May 21, 2015, and features performances of classics like ‘Layla’, ‘Wonderful Tonight’, and more, and a bonus performance of ‘Little Queen of Spades.’
• Bruce Springsteen – is on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the first time in his career, and he has Zach Bryan to thank for it. He’s featured on Bryan’s hit ‘Sandpaper’, which debuted at #26. And not only is it The Boss’ first country hit, it also put him back on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in 15 years, landing at #71. ‘Working on a Dream’ peaked at #95 in 2009.
• Ingrid Andress — says she was intoxicated during her rocky performance of the US National Anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby on Monday – and she’s getting help. A statement says: “I’m not gonna (BS) y’all, I was drunk last night. I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need…I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition.” Her off-key performance went viral, with some calling it the worst anthem performance of all time. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mr2bzfp5
• Brett Young – Tomorrow, he’s dropping the new single ‘Goodnight Into Good Morning’. He posted a teaser clip on X, and quoted the song’s lyric, writing: “‘Tonight is feeling like the kinda night that turns GOODNIGHT INTO GOOD MORNING’. New song out FRIDAY!” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4kywud9j
• Reba McEntire – will host this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards – for the 18th time. The 2025 ACM Awards 60th anniversary ceremony is set for May 8, from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco TX — the Dallas Cowboys’ world HQ. Reba’s new NBC comedy “Happy’s Place” premieres October 18.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SNEAKER PREVIEW:
A Kenyan distance-runner will make history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by competing in spray-on sneakers. Two-time medalist Hellen Obiri will be wearing a new type of running shoe from sportswear company On. The “Cloudboom Strike LS” (LightSpray) model’s technology works by placing a foot form on the arm of a robot as the shoe’s entire upper part is sprayed on in just 3 minutes, the company says. The sprayer rotates the shoe, applying a material with the characteristics of both plastic and rubber, which lands as a single string that bonds to the outsole without any glue. It is then sprayed with color, and cures in 3 minutes, and the shoes are ready to run. The material used is so form-fitting that athletes often opt to wear the shoes without socks. The first time Obiri used them in competition – at the Boston Marathon in April – she won. LINK: https://youtu.be/X4k23UClZvE
(No word yet on how to take them off!)
(Impressive? You bet. But let’s face it: There hasn’t been an Olympics yet where a Kenyan distance-runner DIDN’T make history in one way or another!)

HAIR DESPAIR:
Who knew? Scientists are saying that if you use shaving or waxing techniques to remove hair, it could lead to a decline in your sense of touch later in life. As you know, older adults can experience a decline in hearing and vision. But a new study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that humans only experience a decline in touch sensitivity in hairless skin – and a person’s (a-hem!) hairier regions remain as sensitive to touch as they were decades ago. For instance, they found that the sense of touch does decline in the hands as we age, but not on our hairy arms and cheeks. The human cheek is reported to be especially sensitive to touch. And, as the scientists pointed out, touch is very important to humans, as social creatures, which is why something as simple as a hug or a caress of the cheek can cause the brain to release mood-boosting oxytocin.
(I’m sad to hear this. I’ve been using a technique to slowly remove hair for the last 10 years. The shower!)
(I’m sorry, I heard the words “hairy cheeks” and my mind totally went down the wrong pathway there. What was I saying?)

NEW FOOD NEWS:
❑ “No-shows” are a huge problem for restaurants these days, with as many as 1 in 5 diners in big cities failing to show up for their reservations. This can have a big financial effect on an already struggling industry. But a new study by Mandoe Media shows that 95% of top restaurants are fighting back by charging fees for missed reservations — and sometimes they cost as much as dinner would have. A Michelin-star spot in Toronto charges $350 per person — the cost of an 8-course dinner. While this is nothing new for Michelin-starred restaurants, independent spots are starting to do the same. When one Brooklyn NY eatery started charging $20 per person for missed reservations, no-shows dropped by 90%. (I’d rather be charged for missing a dental appointment. That way, I still get to eat – and I don’t have to go to the dentist!)
❑ The people Down Under love their coffee so much that Doritos Australia has introduced a coffee flavor to their famous line of chips. “Doritos Coffee” was supposedly created to help Aussies get over the “3pm slump”. (That’s the time coffee shops in the country typically close their doors.) 300 bags of limited-edition Doritos Coffee chips will be given away to fans. An online reviewer who managed to get his hands on a bag came away impressed. (What will they think of next? Pineapple pizza?) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5xp57w4m

“TOXIC” TRAITS:
A recent social media trend is for people to share their so-called “toxic traits” online. And while the seriousness of some of these people’s afflictions can be questioned, their sense of humor definitely cannot. Here are some of the best self-described ‘toxic traits’ . . .
☞ “My toxic trait is I always have to eat EXACTLY what I have a taste for.” – Sisi
☞ “my toxic trait is thinking i could be a surgeon after watching nine seasons of grey’s anatomy” – anna
☞ “My toxic trait is that if I came across a bear in the wilderness I think it would really appreciate little head scratches” – Ron Iver
☞ “my toxic trait is that if they opened Jurassic park I would still totally go” – ely kreimendahl
☞  “My toxic trait is texting my husband from a different room then walking over to ask if he read my text yet” – emmy-pooh
☞ “My toxic trait is I don’t ever return or exchange clothes that don’t fit, I’m just going to have the wrong size sitting in my closet for all eternity” – General Lee Dope
☞ “my toxic trait is assuming every annoying person is a virgo” — bri
☞ “my toxic trait is thinking i’m one little treat away from all my problems being solved” — Adam
☞ “my toxic trait is i think i can cut my own hair” – Kemi Marie

DID YOU KNOW?
People have been using words like “whatchamacallit”, “gizmo” and “thingamajig” in place of words they can’t think of for eons. The Oxford English Dictionary has its own category for these terms, labeled “thing or person whose name is forgotten or unknown”. It includes 64 entries – some going back as far as the early middle English period (1100–1300). But not all of them are still used today. The last known use for the word “whiblin” was in 1652, for example, and “jiggumbob” is officially deemed obsolete. Others, like “gizmo” and “doodah” are still in common use, and you can even buy “Whatchamacallits” and “Whozeewhatzits” – they are chocolate bars made by Hershey’s. (Says who? “What’s-his-name”?)

• “Insurance Nerd Day, celebrating everyone employed in this industry, and to help attract young people to the business, by dispelling the myth that insurance work is a “boring” career path. (Sorry, you lost me for a minute there…what were you saying?)
• “Sour Candy Day”. If you’ve ever popped a Warheads candy in your mouth or snacked on a handful of Sour Patch Kids, chances are you’ve experienced the rush and the zing of sour candy. It’s the feeling we all love to hate, and for some, that mouth-puckering taste is so craveable that it’s the only type of candy they’ll eat.
• “Get to Know Your Customers Day”, celebrated on the 3rd Thurs. of every 3rd month, it serves as a chance to strengthen the relationships between businesses and their customers. Customers who feel they are known by those where they shop are more likely to return.
