NEW HEIMLICH TRICK:

Everyone knows that if someone is choking, the best thing to do for them is to perform the Heimlich maneuver – or is it? Since its introduction in 1974, the Heimlich maneuver, where a first-aider places their arms around a choking person from behind, and pulls upwards and inwards on the abdomen, in an effort to expel anything lodged in the airway, has been the recommended method of assistance. But research has linked the Heimlich to damage to the ribs and heart valves, as well as stomach and food pipe ruptures. And Grace Lawson, a lead EMT trainer with St. John Ambulance, says that first, you should ask “if they are choking, just in case it might be something like a severe allergy which has caused their throat to swell — a different reason for obstruction.” Next, ask if the patient can cough, to see if the obstruction can be dislodged that way. If not, you should first try administering 5 back blows, directly between the shoulder blades, using the heel of your hand. This action can be just as effective in dislodging an obstruction, without the possible harm of the Heimlich, according to the American Red Cross. If that doesn’t work, THEN you should try the Heimlich.
(Of course, the other way to help someone in that situation is to stop choking them!)
(I was really hoping that someone had come up with a completely new procedure – that I could spell!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A suburban Detroit library had to be closed after a DVD case in a book return bin was found to be filled with bugs. Royal Oak Public Library said on social media that it was closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning. The DVD had been returned sometime after closing last Friday. Upon discovery of the bugs on Saturday morning, “the book drops were immediately locked and all items that were in those book drops were bagged up and isolated.” A follow-up post Monday said the facility had been given the all-clear by a pest control company and would reopen at 1pm. The insects in the DVD case were identified by the company as cockroaches. (Take THAT everyone who complains that they miss Blockbuster!)
➢ The mystery of an SUV which was seen perched on top of a Fort Myers, Florida dumpster has been solved. It turns out the SUV had been lifted onto the dumpster by a forklift operated by a construction worker. The vehicle had been left parked in a work area, and as one worker put it: “Sometimes when you park where you’re not supposed to, this is what happens.” The vehicle was later removed from the dumpster and relocated to a parking space away from the work area. (…where its rims were promptly stolen, just like every other car in Fort Myers!)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.27.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Morning Show Hosts Day”, dedicated to watching and showing appreciation for hosts of morning TV shows. (But we’re going to be quiet about that, and just say that it’s all about RADIO morning show hosts…)
• “Ancestor Appreciation Day”, a day to learn about and appreciate one’s forebears. (Hey, without them, you wouldn’t be here!)
• “Day of Forgiveness”. Because remember, forgiving someone is good for you: it relieves stress—from anger, resentment, and bitterness—and gives permission to heal, and to stop living in the past.
• “Chocolate Milk Day”. This stuff was unheard of until the Van Houten company in Holland invented a cocoa pressing method in 1828. In 2006, a study determined that chocolate milk is a better post-workout recovery drink than white milk, water, or most sports drinks.
• “Corned Beef Hash Day”. Hash is a culinary term for a mixture of foods that have been finely chopped or diced. Corned beef hash is not only a delicious comfort food, it’s also easy to make. There are no rules regarding what to include, but diced potatoes and corned beef is pretty important.
• “Love Note Day”, which falls annually on the 4th Friday in September, encourages us to share feelings for loved ones with written words. (“Dear Pizza…”)
• “Hug a Vegetarian Day”, dedicated to hugging those who love and respect animals the most! Adopting a meat-free diet saves the lives of more than 100 animals per year.
• “BRAVE Day”, honoring women who “lift each other up, rescue each other and make each other BRAVE.” Today, women with varied life experiences and from different generations come together to support each other with simple gestures.
• “World Tourism Day”, as declared by the UN’s World Tourism Organization. The 2024 theme: “Tourism and Peace” LINK:  https://www.unwto.org/world-tourism-day-2024
• “Crush a Can Day”, to remind everyone to do their part in recycling. Here are some “canned facts”:
⇒ If you laid all the aluminum cans recycled annually end to end, they would circle the earth 169 times.
⇒ In America, 105,800 cans are recycled every minute.
⇒ There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum can, can be recycled.
⇒ Your TV can run for 3 hours from the energy saved by recycling one can.
⇒ Aluminum cans are worth about a penny each.
⇒ More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.

SATURDAY:
• “Drink Beer Day”, a day to raise a glass of your favorite ale or lager and celebrate one of the oldest man-made beverages. It’s been produced since the Neolithic Era and by commercial breweries as far back as 1040 AD. (Betcha can’t have just one!)
• “Good Neighbor Day”, celebrated since 2003 to recognize and appreciate the nice folks next door. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you!
• “Fish Tank Floorshow Night”, a day to gather family & friends around your aquarium to dance and sing. Why? Every other day, your fish are in the spotlight, keeping you entertained…tonight, it’s payback time!
• “International Right to Know Day”, to raise awareness about people’s right to access government info and to promote freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.
• “World Rabies Day”, to raise awareness about the continuing burden of rabies and how the disease can be prevented.
• “Strawberry Cream Pie Day”. Did you know that 70% of a strawberry cream pie’s weight comes from the strawberries themselves? (Significantly less after I add whipped cream…)
• “Ask a Stupid Question Day”, created by some unknown keener who decided that ‘asking a stupid question is better than repairing a stupid mistake’. It’s a good excuse to pose perplexing questions like…
⇒ If our knees were bent the other way, what would a chair look like?
⇒ Why did Yankee Doodle name the feather in his hat ‘Macaroni’?
⇒ Can we spell the word ‘creativity’ however we want?
⇒ Can you be a ‘closet claustrophobic’?
⇒ If winning isn’t important … why do we keep score?
⇒ Why aren’t blueberries blue?
• It’s also “Ghost Hunting Day” and “Family Health and Fitness Day”. We’re thinking it might be possible to somehow combine the 2…

SUNDAY:
• “National Coffee Day”, celebrating one of the world’s favorite beverages. It’s also to promote fair trade and to raise awareness of the plight of coffee growers. Today is also “Biscotti Day”, which is fairly handy. (BTW, Tuesday is “INTERNATIONAL Coffee Day”)

• “World Heart Day”, a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease. LINK: https://world-heart-federation.org/world-heart-day

• “International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste”, a day to prioritize actions and move ahead with innovation to reduce food loss and waste.
• “Broadway Musicals Day”. Broadway theaters, considered to be unequaled in the English-speaking world, are located in Midtown Manhattan, close to Times Square, near Broadway, although only a handful of them are actually on Broadway. There are more than 40 Broadway theaters, and to be considered, it usually must have at least 500 seats.
