SHOOTING THE BULL

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MORNING AFTER:
Here’s a little something to keep in mind as you get set for your weekend shenanigans: Many believe that chugging water after a night of drinking will help you avoid a hangover, but experts are…well, they’re pouring cold water on that theory. Using data from 3 studies, researchers from Utrecht University in the Netherlands concluded that dehydration is not the sole cause of a hangover – and therefore drinking water has a limited effect on how you feel the next day. They looked at the hangover symptoms of boozers who drank water before bed versus those who didn’t – and found that while people who drank water felt less dehydrated, they experienced the same amount of pain, nausea, and exhaustion the next day as those who didn’t slug water. The conclusion: Consuming water during or directly after a drinking session does NOT prevent hangovers. Also: drinking water after the hangover has started does nothing to alleviate the symptoms.
(Fine. Then at this point, it’s very hard for me NOT to recommend the “hair of the dog”!)
(…and that’s exactly why I, after a night out, chug water…AND aspirin!)

THINGS THAT ARE GETTING ‘OUT OF CONTROL’ THESE DAYS:
❑ Tipping Culture: Everyone agrees – but no one is doing anything about it. Why should you tip for counter service – or tip a self-checkout machine? (And when did the minimum tip become 25%)
❑ Subscriptions for everything: Remember when you didn’t have to give all your personal info just to watch a football game or visit a website? (And you didn’t have to pay every month to use a stinking piece of software?)
❑ Too many apps: Everything requires one these days. Good deals at stores, event tickets, parking…even a simple meal out, sometimes.
❑ Too many ads: No one is safe. They take up half the screen, or you have to watch a video before moving on to the thing you went there for. (And you probably went there to buy a subscription!)
❑ The Marvel Universe: Too many movies and constant TV shows turned the MCU into a convoluted mess. Do you even try to keep up anymore? (I don’t think even Tony Stark could…)
❑ Blinding LED headlights: You can tell it’s a new car because your retinas are burning. Is this safe?
❑ Artificial Intelligence: It’s becoming frighteningly common and pretty much unavoidable. (In a few years, AI will probably be asking if people are getting out of control!)
❑ New slang: At one point, words like “cool” or “awesome” were radical, but at least those are legitimate words. “Bussin’” and “rizz” and “cheugy” just sound cheugy to me…
❑ Movie remakes and sequels: See “Marvel Universe”, above…
❑ Entry-level job requirements: Why would they ask that you have a degree or 2 for an entry-level job that pays next to nothing? (Because they can?)
❑ Sensational news: If every story is “breaking” and “sensational”, then none are. Please make your clickbait matter!
(Also getting out of control: “Get off my lawn” types telling everyone that the things they don’t like are getting “out of control”!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A California man discovered he has been mistakenly paying his neighbor’s power bill for up to 18 years. Ken Wilson, who has lived in the same apartment since 2006, said he recently noticed his Pacific Gas and Electric bill was going up, so he attempted to reduce his energy usage. That didn’t help, so he contacted the utility. An employee came to examine the meter and discovered the company had been charging him for the unit next door, instead of his own place, and may have been doing so for 18 years. PG&E said in a statement: “We acknowledge an error occurred in this instance, and we are fully committed to rectifying the situation.” (Sure, but it was all fine and dandy when he used to run an on-site laundry – and a grow-op!)
➢ Police are looking for a man and woman who took an empty New York City subway train on a joyride. Surveillance photos released by the NYPD show a woman dressed all in pink, including a pink shower cap, and a man in a blue tank top. They boarded an unoccupied train parked at the Briarwood station in Queens just after midnight on Sept. 12 — and somehow got it running. But not for long. They crashed it into another parked train, then took off on the run. No word on how much damage they caused. (But we’re pretty sure they damaged their chances of ever getting a job driving subway trains!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Over half of people believe that a good cup of coffee can turn a bad day into a good one, according to a recent poll. The survey of java drinkers in the US also revealed exactly what the “perfect” cup of coffee is most likely to be. Both hot and cold coffee drinkers prefer their brews medium roast, and with a bold, earthy and chocolatey flavor profile. Oh, and by the way, one in 5 even feel that having fresh coffee is “better than sex.” (Cheaper, too! Who said that?)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.20.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Tradesmen Day”, celebrating their vital role as the real working hands of the world. It was created by IRWIN Tools to say thanks, honor, and recognize these hard-working men and women, and “to celebrate all that they do to contribute so meaningfully to our lives.”
• “Gibberish Day”, highlighting the uselessness of the convoluted terminology and gobbledy-gook spouted by those who are masking their lack of knowledge and expertise — or are just too spineless to make a clear statement. (Try this ‘Gibberish Generator’:  https://tinyurl.com/3avusmme )
• “Punch Day”. The word ‘punch’ is said to come from the Hindustani word ‘panch’, which means ‘five’. In the early 1600s, sailors and employees of the British East India Company brought a new exotic drink from India to England. The beverage was made from spirits, lemon, sugar, water, and tea.
• “Cheese String Day”. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of String Cheese is deciding how to eat it. Most go for the classic “peel down and chow down” method—separating each stick into thin strands. Or just chomp off a chunk, as if it were regular cheese… (Which do you call it: ‘Cheese String’ or ‘String Cheese’?)
• “Pepperoni Pizza Day”, celebrating America’s favorite variety of pizza. Here’s some interesting trivia on the ever-popular pizza:
⇒ The first pizza was sold in Naples Italy in 1738.
⇒ Pizzas most likely evolved as a variation of flatbreads.
⇒ Pepperoni is the most popular kind, preferred by 36% of people (and 100% of children at a birthday party).
⇒ Over 3 billion pizzas are sold in the US each year.
⇒ More pizzas are sold on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year.
⇒ Halloween is the second most popular day for eating pizza.
⇒ Over 17% of restaurants are pizzerias, or serve pizza.
⇒ Americans consume over 23 pounds of pizza per person per year.
• “Concussion Awareness Day”. Not just to increase awareness, but also to raise funds for brain injury charitable organizations and show support for those suffering. Hopefully, those dealing with the effects of mild traumatic brain injuries feel empowered to share their story, connect with one another and help raise consciousness. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdzxcfc3

SATURDAY:

• “Last Full Day of Summer” in the Northern Hemisphere (sniff!), as Autumn officially arrives tomorrow.
• “Batman Day”, saluting the 1939 creation of the character as a DC comic strip hero. It’s been calculated it would take a person 15-18 years to do all the training they’d need to take on the job. Forbes estimates alter-ego Bruce Wayne’s worth at $9.2 billion, and lists his company, ‘Wayne Enterprises’, as having annual revenue of $31.3 billion. (NOTE: The ‘Batman’ character will be honored with the 2,790th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, September 26.) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mrfujw5s
• “Escapology Day”, on the anniversary of the date in 1912 when Houdini first performed his Water Torture Cell escape. The day celebrates escapologists — those artists, magicians, daredevils, and stage performers who escape from restraints and other traps such as straitjackets, handcuffs, cages, and coffins, sometimes several of these at once.
• “Miniature Golf Day”. The first mini-golf was the “Tom Thumb Golf Course” built in 1929 in Chattanooga TN. Nowadays there’s a ‘Professional Miniature Golf Association’ that holds the “PMGA Championship” each year.
• “Pecan Cookie Day”. Whether you prefer butter pecan, caramel pecan, orange pecan, or maple pecan cookies, enjoy a delicious treat today! (One of each, please!)
• “Pause the World Day”. Sirens, TV, computers, printers, car stereos, endless talking — Most of us accept daily racket as normal. We rarely experience true silence, but that can help you get in touch with your emotions, provide you with a sense of calm, and leave you feeling rejuvenated (or just make you notice that ringing in your ears….)
• “World Peace Day, as declared by the UN, “devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mydtywwy
• “World Alzheimer’s Day”, an annual observance to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2p8wbk8p
• “World Gratitude Day”, to ‘unite all people in a positive emotion of gratitude, creating a world community’. Research indicates that feelings of gratitude may be the key to happiness. (So, show some gratitude, DAMMIT!)
• “National Cleanup Day”, to celebrate the importance of uniting to care for our outdoor spaces and remove litter from our trails, parks, and community spaces. National Cleanup Day encourages all of us to take action to make the world a better place. Just think, what if everyone just picked up one piece of litter?

SUNDAY-
• “Autumnal Equinox” in the Northern Hemisphere, as Fall officially arrives this morning at 8:43am EDT. Fall ends with the start of Winter on December 21…in 90 days.
• “Proposal Day”, observed on the first day of Spring and the first day of Fall. (Probably a creation of some jewelry store somewhere…!)
• “Business Women’s Day”, celebrating the important contribution of working women and women business owners.
• “Dear Diary Day”, a day to ‘put it on paper because it’ll make you feel better’. (Until some sneak finds your diary and Instagrams all your deepest, darkest secrets…)
• “Centenarians Day”, honoring those who’ve lived 100 years or more. (You’d best hurry up and honor them!)
• “Hobbit Day”, celebrating author JRR Tolkien and the birthdays of his characters ‘Frodo’ and ‘Bilbo Baggins’. “The Hobbit” was first published 87 years ago today.
• “White Chocolate Day”, honoring the tasty confection of sugar, cocoa butter, and milk solids. It first appeared in Switzerland in the 1930s when Nestlé invented it to use up excess cocoa butter. To qualify as real ‘white chocolate’, it must be at least 20% cocoa butter by weight.
• “Hug a Vegetarian Day”, dedicated to hugging those who love animals the most! Adopting a meat-free diet saves the lives of more than 100 animals per year. (And you can still have chocolate!)
• “Online Recovery Day”, a campaign to raise awareness for online treatment of substance abuse. It is the first national health awareness day focused on the benefits and advantages of telehealth services for any health issue. Link: https://www.nationalonlinerecoveryday.com/
• “World Carfree Day”, where people give up driving for a day to experience what it would be like to live in a world without cars, and to raise awareness for global issues such as pollution and climate change. (Darn! I thought that said “Free Car Day”!!)
