BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Eugene and Dan Levy will host the 2024 Emmys together, ABC announced on Friday. The “Schitt’s Creek” stars and creators will make history as the first-ever father-son duo to host the event. In a statement, the Levys said: “For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough.” In 2020, Eugene took home the prize for Outstanding Comedy Actor, while Dan won Best Supporting Comedy Actor. Dan also won for writing and directing, and both took the award for Outstanding Comedy Series as exec producers. This year’s Emmys are set for Sept. 15.

★ That’s hot. In fact, it’s TOO hot. Paris Hilton’s glam trailer burned down on the set of her new music video ‘Bad Bitch Academy’ on Friday but she fortunately walked away unharmed. Along with a photo of the aftermath, Hilton wrote on Instagram: “Sadly an accidental fire broke out in my trailer on the set of my music video today. As heartbreaking as it is, I’m so thankful everyone is safe. She tagged fellow stars seemingly collaborating with her on the video, including Heidi Klum, Lance Bass, and Meghan Trainor. The pic shows the fire was ablaze long enough to ruin the entire trailer, which reportedly housed designer clothes, custom Swarovski outfits, jewelry and accessories, computers and “tons of personal items”.

★ “Alien: Romulus” got off to a good start at the box office, winning over longtime fans and earning an industry estimated $41 million opening weekend domestically. Disney’s other R-rated offering, Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” is now the highest grossing film ever with that rating, passing “Joker” as it earned an estimated $28 million in its 4th weekend, bringing its domestic total to $545 million, and hitting the list of the top 20 highest grossing films ever in North America. In its second weekend, “It Ends With Us” took in a projected $24 million.

★ A comedian featured on “America’s Got Talent” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden” died after a hit-and-run in LA late Thursday night. 73-year-old Perry Kurtz was hit by a car while crossing Ventura Boulevard. LAPD said: “The Honda continued eastbound failing to stop, identify self, or render aid as required by law.” Kurtz, who was from Philadelphia, was pronounced dead at the scene. Cops could not confirm whether he was hit in a crosswalk.

★ Kevin Costner’s passion project, the epic Western “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” has been a disaster at the box office — but it’s still getting a premiere date on Max, hitting the streamer on Aug. 23. The former “Yellowstone” star wrote, directed and starred in the first installment of his new Western film series, which premiered in June, making only $32 million on a $100 million budget. Costner reportedly spent $38 million of his own money on the film. Four installments were planned, but its future is now up in the air, as the release of “Chapter Two” has been scrapped from the August schedule in the US.

SHOOTING THE BULL

CLASSIC TREATMENT:
It’s not exactly news that listening to music can result in a mood lift. But according to Chinese researchers, listening to classical music could actually be a powerful tool in treating depression, especially for those who haven’t responded well to other therapies. The scientists, at Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, say they discovered that the music lifts a person’s mood by improving connections between brain regions related to both sound and pleasure. This enhanced brain connectivity is associated with better mood outcomes. The researchers said it’s as if the music creates a harmonious symphony within the brain itself, helping to restore balance in areas disrupted by depression.
(The only problem? You have to listen to classical music!)
(Interestingly, they also found that when test subjects listened to country music backwards, their truck started up, their wife came back, and their depression did, too!)

THE LOWDOWN ON HIGH HEELS:
⇒ Yesterday, a man attempted to set a new world record for completing a marathon in stiletto heels. Curtis Hargrove, who is a seasoned marathon runner, took on the 42km (26.2m) race wearing red high heels, to raise money and awareness for those experiencing domestic abuse. To beat the previous record, Hargrove had to finish the race in less than 5 hours, 13 minutes, and 27 seconds. He said he’d have to keep up a “nice, steady jog” to clinch the record. In 2012, he walked 300 kilometres in red stilettos in support of the YWCA. (Who needs toenails, anyway?) [***Results not available by deadline, but try your friend Google to find out if he was successful. ***]
⇒ The founder of Spanx, Sara Blakely, thinks she has the next essential accessory for the busy modern woman: High-heeled sneakers. Last week, she posted an Instagram message, teasing a “luxury hybrid stiletto” and “hy-heel sneaker.” She added that the launch is slated for tomorrow. But “Inc.” magazine found that the new website (Sneex.com) is already up. It offers high-heeled sneakers made of Napa leather, mesh and suede, and engineered to eliminate pain points that are common with high heel. The sneakers are listed for $395 to $595 per pair. (I know a guy who could have used a pair of these things yesterday!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A startup is using dead leaves to make paper – without cutting down trees. France’s Releaf Paper (get it?) takes dead leaves from city trees and turns them into paper for bags, office supplies, and more. The WWF reports that 6 billion trees are cut down every year for paper products, producing everything from toilet paper to Amazon boxes to the latest best-selling novels. Meanwhile, the average city produces 8,000 metric tons of leaves each year, which clog gutters and sewers, and have to be collected, composted, burned, or dumped in landfills. So, there is a huge supply of leaves, and Releaf is already using them to produce 3 million paper bags per year. By joining forces with landscapers across Europe, thousands of tonnes of leaves arrive at their facility, where a low-water, zero-sulfur/chlorine production process sees the company create paper with much smaller water and carbon footprints.
➢ Scientists are developing a new generation of ‘smart’ insulins that they say could transform the way people with type 1 diabetes manage their condition. The breakthrough treatments mimic the body’s response to changing blood sugar levels in real-time, reducing the need for frequent injections to just once per week. Last week, those behind experimental ‘glucose-responsive’ insulins were awarded £2.7m (US$3.5m) to fast-track their development, as part of the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge. Dr Tim Heise, vice-chair of the scientific advisory panel for the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge, said that this development, if successful, “would come as close to a cure for type 1 diabetes as any drug therapy could.”

FAIR FOOD FARE:
Canada’s largest annual fair, Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition, got underway on Friday. And while some people go there for the rides and entertainment, others are just there for the food. Here’s a sampling of this year’s menu:
⇒ Deep Fried Pickle Oreos: Just what it sounds like: 3 Oreo cookies, each sandwiching 2 dill pickle slices, fried in a shaved pickle batter and topped with cinnamon sugar and icing.
⇒ Deep Fried Cheese Curds (Taylor’s Version): Deep fried cheese curds topped with icing, cotton candy, crunchy candy bits and edible glitter. Comes with a “Curd Lover” friendship bracelet. (We’re sure they have copyright clearance on the ‘Taylor’s Version’ business…)
⇒ Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab on a Stick: Chow down on the whole crab – doused in sriracha mayo.
⇒ Deep Fried Butter Chicken Lasagna: A deep-fried slab of 8-layer lasagna with mozzarella, parmesan and ground butter chicken, in a slightly spicy butter chicken and tomato sauce. (That doesn’t sound weird – it sounds delicious!)
⇒ Mac & Cheetos Popsicle: Fried mac and cheese conveniently served on a stick, and livened up with a Cheetos coating.
⇒ Kool-Aid Fried Chicken: Day-Glo red, deep-fried and generously topped, it boldly ventures into unfamiliar territory. (And we bet it’s refreshing!)
⇒ Cheeseburger Spring Rolls: More portable than your typical burger, this hand-rolled snack is stuffed with ground beef, cheese and dill pickles.
⇒ Spammy Tots: Features crispy sushi rice tots splashed with Aloha Shoyu soy sauce and topped with Spam fries, nori flakes, furikake and spicy mayo. (If I’m having this one, it’ll definitely be AFTER I hit the Mega Drop ride!)
⇒ Wasabi Ice Cream: Wasabi-flavored ice cream topped with crunchy orange sugar pearls and nori, served in a charcoal cone.

DID YOU KNOW?
The next internet buzzword very well could become…“un-alived”. Recently, some visitors to Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture reported seeing something that surprised them. A placard on display in one of its exhibits described an iconic hometown hero’s death in the following way: “Kurt Cobain un-alived himself at 27.” “Unalived” is a common term on TikTok, first used as a way to get around censors on the app when discussing death. But it’s since taken on a euphemistic meaning offline, as a way to talk about death and especially suicide, while attempting to avoid the subject’s inherent discomfort.
