★ Jennifer Lopez is no longer gone, girl. She and Ben Affleck are back in the same country and hanging out. TMZ says the 2 were both at his Beverly Hills office on Wednesday, although photographers weren’t able to snap them together. He arrived around 10am, and J Lo pulled up a few hours later. The previous evening, Affleck was spotted leaving the same location — wearing his wedding ring. He made headlines over the weekend for ditching the silver band while grabbing lunch with his 18-year-old daughter, Violet. At the time, J-Lo was vacationing in Italy without her husband, with reports saying she needed “time to reflect on her marriage.”

★ Paris Hilton testified to Congress that she was sexually abused and force-fed medication during the time she spent in youth residential treatment facilities. Hilton, a long-time advocate for children’s welfare and regulation of such facilities, appeared before the House Committee on Ways and Means. She spoke about the time she spent as a child in youth residential facilities, and how she was ripped from her bed at home at 16 and taken to a facility after her parents realized she had been clubbing at age 15. Hilton said that although the “programs promised healing, growth and support”, they instead “did not allow me to speak, move freely or even look out a window for 2 years”.

★ Jamie Foxx’s daughter says he is “doing amazing”, several months after his mystery health scare. The 56-year-old actor took time out of the public eye from April to December last year after he was struck down with a mystery medical complication, but his daughter Corinne Foxx told “Entertainment Tonight”: “He’s doing so great, he’s doing amazing”, even playing pickleball twice daily. She also said she’s “grateful” that she can work on the game show “Beat Shazam” with him.

★ “Downton Abbey” 3 will hit the big screen in September 2025. The official Instagram page for the show and Focus Features said in a joint announcement: “A new motion picture event. The third film in the beloved Downton franchise will be released only in theaters September 12, 2025.” The news comes a month after the show confirmed a threequel was in the works, releasing a video of the classic cast back together for a table read. So far, the official title hasn’t been revealed. The original “Downton Abbey” series aired from 2010-15. It was followed by 2 films: 2019’s “Downton Abbey” and “Downton Abbey: A New Era” in 2022.

★ Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s romance isn’t the only “Love Story” to come from Chiefs Kingdom. Perhaps taking inspiration from couple, Hallmark Channel has teamed up with the NFL for the new Christmas film “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story”. While the movie is not about Taylor and Travis, it’ll be filmed in Kansas City, and include scenes shot at Arrowhead Stadium. A press release says that when trouble arises in the budding relationship between a Chiefs superfan and the team’s director of Fan Engagement, perhaps “a little Christmas magic can throw a Hail Mary.” The film will be released as part of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas programming this year.

Do you remember your first car? Of course you do. According to a new survey, 9 in 10 of us not only remember that first set of wheels, 60% wish they could go back in time to take better care of it. The poll, taken in the US, also shows that the older you are, the more nostalgic you are for your first drive. 91% of Baby Boomers and 89% of Gen Xers especially miss their first cars. The Talker survey also found that those who consider themselves to be “car lovers” are more likely to name their rides (49%), compared to “car likers” (20%), and “car dislikers” (14%). Those who named their car said the vehicle earned its name through its personality (37%), the make and model (29%) or how it performs (21%).

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A Cleveland grandmother was stunned when she received a $105 speeding ticket – especially considering the picture with the ticket clearly shows her van being towed when the alleged violation took place. She had been on the way to her daycare center when her minivan gave out, and called a tow truck to have it brought in for service. A few weeks later, the notice of a $105 fine came to her home. As you can imagine, fighting a ticket, especially as a grandmother, isn’t easy, but she showed up in person to discuss things. But her statement seemingly fell on deaf ears, as at the police station, she was told she would need to contact the third-party company that handles their speed-cam tickets. As she said to a reporter: “What are they doing?…my car is on a flat bed, I’m not driving that truck.” (Careful, lady — the photo also clearly shows you weren’t wearing a seat belt!)
➢ Denmark plans to tax farmers for the greenhouse gases emitted by their…cows, sheep and pigs. Beginning in 2030, it will become the first country in the world to do so, as it targets a major source of methane emissions, one of the most potent gases contributing to global warming. Farmers with livestock will be taxed 120 Danish kroner (US $17) per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent emitted from each bovine. A typical Danish cow produces 6 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year, which means the average annual charge per cow will be a little over $100. Other animals will be taxed at a lesser rate. (And fathers after Thanksgiving dinner? They’ll be taxed at a HIGHER rate!)

CANADIANISMS THAT OTHERS JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND, EH?
Canada Day is on Monday, so we’re paying tribute to our home and native language…
→ Canadian tuxedo: Doubling up the denim by wearing jeans and a jean jacket is sometimes known as a Canadian tuxedo. South of the border, it can be called a ‘Texas tux’. (But you might also need a cowboy hat…)
→ Mickey: These are miniature bottles of booze – usually 375ml, or 13oz. (Perfect for church!)
→ Pencil Crayons: Americans call them “colored pencils” and Brits call them “colouring pencils.” But Canadians have stuck firmly to the term ‘Pencil Crayons’, which is a mashup of “coloured pencils” and the French “crayon de couleur.”
→ KD: Kraft Mac & Cheese is a big deal throughout North America, but Canadians can’t believe that others haven’t also shortened the name to ‘KD’. The nickname has become so popular that Kraft has been known to use the term in its advertising.
→ 2-4: This one’s nice and straightforward. A ‘two-four’ is a pack of 24 beers. Simple enough.
→ Molson muscle: If a Canadian compliments you on your ‘Molson muscle’, it might be time to lay off the 2-4s. Molson is a Montreal-based brewery, and a Molson muscle is a big ol’ beer belly.
→ Toque: It’s a knitted cap. There’s some debate regarding the origin of the term, but it seems likely it comes from French ‘toc’, meaning – you guessed it – ‘hat’!
→ Darts: In the Great White North, cigarettes are quite commonly referred to as ‘darts’. Yes, both kinds of darts can kill you – these ones just take a bit longer…
→ Housecoats: Americans call them ‘bathrobes’, Brits call them ‘dressing gowns’, Canadians call them ‘housecoats’. Why? Well, because they’re coats you wear inside the house, eh?
→ Eavestroughs: Simply put, they’re rain gutters, the water discharge systems attached to buildings’ roofs. We’re guessing this one comes from the British, because it sounds so…British!
→ Keener: If you’re a little too keen, you’re a ‘keener’. In less-polite circles, you might be labelled a ‘brown-noser’. We’re guessing you’ve heard that one…
→ Gong show: A personal favorite. “The Gong Show” is an old TV show where people would show off their dubious talents in front of a celeb judging panel. In Canada, ‘Gong Show’ refers to complete and utter chaos. (I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve used it to try to explain what goes on around here…!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A heatwave can negatively affect more than your physical health. A 2022 study by the Boston University School of Public Health found a significant increase in visits to hospital emergency rooms for mental health conditions during the hottest days of the summer. This included ER visits for substance use disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, stress, and other behavioral disorders, and more. The study’s author believes this is due to a combination of factors, including disruption of sleep, and the fact that if you’re experiencing extreme heat, it makes it more difficult to cope with other stressors. It’s not rocket science, but he reminds us that it’s important to check in with friends, family, and neighbors, to make sure they know what resources are available to them during periods of extreme heat. And check in with yourself, too, to make sure you’re doing OK.

• “Insurance Awareness Day”. Hmm, now who do you think came up with this one? Insurance is a gamble. If you buy it, you’re betting that something will go wrong. If you don’t buy it, you’re betting that nothing will go wrong. (And even if it doesn’t, your rates still go up!)
• “International Body Piercing Day”, celebrated in piercing and modification communities worldwide. It coincides with the birthday of Jim Ward, the ‘father of modern piercing’. (How do you suppose they recommend you observe this day?)
• “Tapioca Day”, honoring that stuff you put in pudding that looks like fish eyes in glue.
• “INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY”, to poke fun at those who unnecessarily capitalize letters, words, and phrases. (NOW STOP YELLING!)
• “Paul Bunyan Day”, celebrating the famous American fable about the giant lumberjack who performed incredible feats such as scooping out the Great Lakes to get water for ‘Babe’, his blue ox.
• “Logistics Day”. Logistics refers to the process of moving and coordinating resources from one location to another. There are many different facets involved, from packaging to shipping. There is also a wealth of equipment, inventory, materials, and people involved. Today, we recognize and appreciate the importance that the logistics sector plays. (All this explains why there’s a charge for shipping!)
• “Drive Your Corvette to Work Day”, the annual event initiated by Mid America Motorworks. (I hope you don’t need to pick up groceries on the way home!)

• “Camera Day”, which has unknown origins, but we always turn our ‘focus’ to cameras and photographs on June 29th. It’s estimated that each year, we take over 1.8 trillion digital photos. (And some of them don’t even involve “duck face”!)
• “Hug Holiday”, encouraging us to give hugs to those who really need them. Aimed at the elderly, sick and lonely, and anyone who needs the warmth, cheer, and love that a hug provides. Be sure to ask first! (If you knew my Aunt Betty, you’d be asking for a holiday FROM hugs today!)
• “Waffle Iron Day”, celebrating the awesome kitchen gadget. The waffle dates back to the 1300s in Greece, where flat cakes were baked between 2 metal pans. At the time, they topped it with cheeses and herbs. (What’s the weirdest waffle ingredient or topping you’ve heard of? For us, it’s turkey stuffing!)
• “Almond Buttercrunch Day”, a combination of toffee covered with chocolate, and sprinkled with toasted almonds. (It’s definitely worth a special day to me!)
