★ Just minutes after Hurricane Milton made landfall with 120mph winds at Siesta Key FL, Anderson Cooper suffered his own associated impact. Cooper was doing a live standup for CNN in Bradenton, a few miles north of Siesta Key, when a piece of flying debris hit him directly in the face. Cooper, consummate pro that he is, shouted out “Woah! That wasn’t good. We’ll probably go inside shortly” before carrying on with his report. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has quietly made a $5 million donation to hurricane relief efforts in Florida as the state recovers from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The nonprofit Feeding America said the contribution “will help communities rebuild and recover, [provide] essential food, clean water and supplies to people affected by these devastating storms.” Swift is scheduled to play 3 shows in Miami starting Oct. 18, as she resumes her Eras Tour.

★ James Bond bosses are sifting through “interesting ideas” as they search for someone to replace Daniel Craig. Craig stepped down from the franchise following the release of the 2021 film “No Time to Die”, and now Jennifer Salke, global head of Amazon MGM Studios, has given an update on the casting process. She said: “There are a lot of ideas (about potential actors) that have popped up that I thought are interesting”, and “There are a lot of different ways we can go”. She recognizes that Bond fans are being “patient” as the search continues, but also doesn’t want to leave too much of a gap between 007 films.

★ Jeff Goldblum has dismissed the idea of returning to the “Jurassic Park” franchise. He played ‘Dr. Ian Malcolm’ in the first 2 instalments of the series, as well as the legacy sequels “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “Dominion”. But now, he says, his time in the series is over — probably. He told Total Film: “I think Ian Malcolm may have ridden off into the sunset. Maybe.” Even though Goldblum has seemingly parted ways with the series, he’s excited to see the next entry in the franchise “Jurassic World: Rebirth”, which features Scarlett Johansson and his “Wicked” co-star Jonathan Bailey, which is scheduled for release in July.

★ Al Pacino gave up booze and drugs after suffering terrifying “blackouts.” The 84-year-old actor turned to alcohol and substance abuse while struggling to cope with life in the spotlight, but he has been sober for decades. He said to People: “I started to forget things at a very young age — they called them blackouts, so I got nervous.” Pacino added that he tried enrolling in Alcoholics Anonymous but didn’t find the support system helpful, calling it “a great place, but it was not for me.” Pacino’s new memoir, “Sonny Boy” will be released on Oct. 15.

★ Kathy Bates is not giving Ozempic all the credit for her hard work. Since beginning her weight loss journey in 2017 after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, she has lost 100 pounds—but she’s not chalking it all up to Ozempic. While she revealed she lost 20 pounds on the drug, she shed 80 pounds thanks to lifestyle and diet changes. In an interview, she said she has “to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.” She feels her diabetes diagnosis was a real wake up call for her reclaiming her self-esteem.

A LOT TO SWALLOW:
Researchers in Denmark say they have come up with a new drug that mimics the effects and benefits of strenuous exercise, without the user having to move a muscle, if you can believe it. Test results, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, shows that that the drug, known as “LaKe”, produces the same health benefits as running 10km (6.2m) at a fast pace. In experiments on rats, it was shown to flush toxins, suppress appetite, and strengthen the heart, thereby reducing the risk of conditions like heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Human trials will soon take place.
(And it works without moving a muscle? As long as it’s ready in time for NHL playoffs, I’m good!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A work of art was rescued from the trash at a Dutch museum — after being mistaken for what it depicts: a pair of abandoned beer cans. The 1988 piece by French artist Alexandre Lavet named “All The Good Times We Spent Together”, looks at first to be a pair of empty beer cans abandoned on the floor. But if you looked closer, you’d see that the dented cans were “meticulously hand-painted with acrylics, with each detail painstakingly replicated,” according to the LAM Museum. While on display, an elevator technician thought they were actual litter, and tossed them. Employees who noticed the artwork was missing launched a search and rescued the intact cans from a trash bin. The museum’s director said that what happened is “a testament to the effectiveness of Alexandre Lavet’s art.” (The fact that his work looks like garbage?)
➢ A photo shared by the founder of a US startup has been given the title of “one of the most depressing LinkedIn posts to exist”. In his post, Torrey Leonard of the AI company Thoughtly, praised new groom Casey Mackrell — for pulling out a laptop at his own wedding to get some work done. Leonard wrote: “My co-founder Casey has built a reputation…as ‘the guy who sits on his laptop in bars’…Last week Thoughtly brought on a customer that needed to launch within 2 weeks. (Casey) just so happened to be getting married within that 2-week window. So, here he is wrapping up a…request at his own wedding. Congrats Casey – now please, go take some time off.” The post was accompanied by a photo showing Casey in a suit, sitting at a table with his laptop in front of his dancing wedding guests. The post quickly went viral, and the comments were not as understanding as Leonard was. SATURDAY:
• “Farmers Day”, honoring all current farmers and those throughout history. Today, we recognize all that they have done to improve our lives. (And when was the last great country song about farmers?)
• “Gumbo Day”, a day to indulge in some good old Louisiana-style cooking. Gumbo is a rich stew usually filled with meat, shellfish, celery, peppers, and onions, served over a bed of rice.
• “Pulled Pork Day”. Although it can certainly be made in a slow cooker, the traditional way to do pulled pork is to slow-smoke it over wood. Today, we celebrate this classic Texas-style dish. (Fun fact: In 2016, Florida-based restaurant chain Sonny’s BBQ set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Serving of Pulled Pork” — a hefty 2,012 pounds/913kg)
• “Costume Swap Day”, an annual opportunity to exchange last year’s Halloween outfits with someone you know, thereby sparing the stress and expense of coming up with something completely new.
• “Family Bowling Day”, when many bowling alleys allow kids to bowl free.

• “International Day for Disaster Reduction”, begun by the UN in 1989 as a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. (How are we doing so far?)

• “Suit Up Day”. Today, wear a suit in honor of ‘Barney Stinson’, the suit-wearing character played by Neil Patrick Harris on “How I Met Your Mother”. He not only always wore one, but “suit up” was one of his catchphrases.

• “Silly Sayings Day”, an annual salute to interesting expressions, witty sayings, and odd catchphrases that come and go like fashion. Examples:

➢ It’s so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid, then say the opposite.
MONDAY:
• “Thanksgiving Day” in Canada, observed since 1879. Originally, the date was changed year-to-year. In 1957, parliament decided it would be observed annually as a national holiday on the 2nd Monday in October.
• “Columbus Day” in America, commemorating Christopher Columbus’ October 12th, 1492 ‘discovery of the New World’ … which had already been discovered by Vikings, Siberians, Aboriginals, Aztecs, and many others, centuries before.
• “Bald & Free Day”, honoring those with a beautiful, shiny top. You don’t have to be bald to celebrate — people who are married to, or related to a bald-headed person are also encouraged to celebrate.
• “Dessert Day”, honoring the tasty treat that tops off dinner. The word originates from the French word “desservir”, meaning “to clear the table.” Nowadays, just 12% of families regularly consume dessert, as opposed to 25% in the 1980s. (Sometimes I eat dessert…after dessert!)
• “lowercase day”, a day to write without capital letters. your middle school grammar teacher might be horrified, but the “shift” button on your keyboard will thank you for the day off.
• “Chocolate Covered Insects Day”. For this exotic snack, insects are roasted to perfection, then coated in chocolate. Crickets and ants are the most popular variety, and most people think they taste like chocolate-covered popcorn.
• “FRUMP Day”, Probably not what you think it is. FRUMP Day is a day to be a Frugal, Responsible, Unpretentious, and Mature Person. It is also a day to honor those who exemplify these characteristics. (Sounds boring…)
