BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
TODAY Canadian children’s writer Kenneth Oppel (“Skybreaker”) will sell naming rights for a character in his next book at the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s 4th annual fundraising auction in Toronto . . . TONIGHT the 7th season of “Gilmore Girls” debuts with the drama raging on in the aftermath of ‘Lorelai’s’ (Lauren Graham) major indiscretion – sleeping with her ex- . . . Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is reportedly hoping to turn one of his movies into a Broadway musical; the bad news is – it’s “Showgirls” . . . Irish actor Gabriel Byrne is being tapped to star as a caring therapist with a frazzled personal life in the HBO half-hour drama “In Treatment”, based on the Israeli TV series and book of the same name (now if they could just get some Hollywood stars to do guest appearances – as themselves) . . . The newest offering in the “Donald J Trump Signature Collection” is a line of luxury luggage and travel goods for customers who want to travel ‘Trump-style’ (includes velcro cap to hold your comb-over in place on long flights) . . . British actress Emma Watson, who plays ‘Hermione Granger’ in the “Harry Potter” movies, says she’s unsure if she’ll return for the final 2 films in the series (sounds like somebody wants some more money!) . . . Just who is going to see “Jackass 2”? Males account for 66% of its audience, with 71% of them younger than 25 . . . And this may be a new Hollywood record – 18-year-old wannabe pop star Aaron Carter has ended his engagement to 22-year-old former Miss Teen USA & “Playboy” model Kari Ann Peniche – just 9 days after proposing (hmm, the 2nd pregnancy test came back negative?).
BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Aerosmith — Steven Tyler has revealed that he’s secretly been battling hepatitis C but is slowly getting better after a year of interferon treatments. He says he’s going public in order to raise awareness of the disease. Other celebs who’ve contracted it include Pamela Anderson and country singer Naomi Judd.
• Alan Jackson – TONIGHT he performs music from his just-released “Like Red On a Rose” album on the “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” (NBC). The new album was produced by bluegrass star Alison Krauss.
• Clay Aiken – TONIGHT he’s a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC).
• George Harrison – TODAY his 1973 “Living in the Material World” album (his 2nd project after The Beatles disbanded) is being reissued in a deluxe CD/DVD package, featuring additional tracks, rare concert footage, and film clips shot during the recording sessions.
• Janet Jackson – TODAY her “20 Y.O.” album is released (stands for “20 Years Old”, referring to the 20 years since her first album, “Control”). THIS AFT she’ll sit down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch and talk about her life, including finding love with Jermaine Dupri and gaining – then losing – almost 60 lbs.
• Ludacris – TODAY he’s on “Live With Regis & Kelly” (syndicated/CTV) to promote his new album “Release Therapy”.
• Scissor Sisters – TONIGHT they’re on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” (NBC). Their new album, “Ta-Dah”, is out TODAY.
• Tony Bennett – Some of the biggest names in music have joined him for his 80th birthday celebration album, “Duets – An American Classic”, out TODAY. The 18-track project features appearances by Bono, Dixie Chicks, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Sting, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Elvis Costello, and Elton John, among others.
• Also on CD TODAY: Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Last Man Standing”; Natalie Cole’s “Leavin’”; and Weird Al Yankovic’s “Straight Outta Lynwood”.

• “Curious George” ( Animated Family ): ‘The Man in the Yellow Hat’ (voiced by Will Ferrell) journeys to the African jungle to find an artifact that will save his museum from closing. There he meets ‘Curious George’, a pint-sized chimp with insatiable curiosity and a nose for adventure. Other characters voiced by Drew Barrymore, Eugene Levy, and Dick Van Dyke. Jack Johnson performs several tunes on the soundtrack. Based on the classic series of kids’ books by Margaret & HA Rey.
• “The Lake House” ( Fantasy Drama ): A lonely doctor (Sandra Bullock) who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its newest resident, a frustrated architect (Keanu Reeves) even though she lived at another time. A remake of the 2000 South Korean film “Siworae”.
• “The Notorious Bettie Page” ( Biographical Drama ): Gretchen Mol stars as the famous 1950s pin-up girl who grew up in a conservative religious family in Tennessee, then became a photo model sensation in 1950s NYC and one of the most popular “Playboy” centerfolds. An artsy film that premiered at the 2005 “Toronto International Film Festival”.
• “The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift” ( Action Thriller ): After an arrest for illegal street racing, a teen outsider (Lucas Black) moves to Japan to avoid jail time. There he discovers the clandestine world of Japanese ‘drift racing’, in which drivers slide through hairpin turns. The 2nd sequel from the 2001 movie.
• Also on DVD TODAY: “One Tree Hill – The Complete 3rd Season”; Showtime’s “Brotherhood – The Complete 1st Season”; and “Whose Line Is It Anyway? Season 1 Volume 1 (Uncensored)”.
iSTEAL:
When Apple Corps opened the iTunes store, it claimed that people would buy music rather than rip it off given a chance. Though the success of iPod has been phenomenal, that’s just not true apparently. A new study by Jupiter Research reveals that, on average, only 5% of the music on an iPod is purchased from online music stores, while the rest is either free music ripped from CDs someone already owned or acquired from various file-sharing sites. (The newer iPod models hold around 20,000 songs. A 14-year-old is gonna buy all these @ 99 cents apiece?)

THE ENFORCER’S WOMAN?
There’s no guarantee it’s true, but Liberal MP Belinda Stronach has been named as the other woman in a divorce application filed by Leanne Domi, the wife of former Toronto Maple Leafs tough guy Tie Domi. In a 20-page document filed in court, Mrs Domi claims her husband and Stronach have been involved in an intimate relationship since he began working with her on her political campaign in JANUARY. Will this hurt her political career … or help it? (Mrs Domi is holding out for alimony, child support and … 2 minutes for high sticking.)

TEXT MESSAGING AS A MARKETING TOOL:
You can’t ignore it anymore, more of the 18-24 demo now relies on text messaging than e-mail for quick communication. A few recent marketing campaigns that have picked up on the trend …
• Cadbury’s in the UK includes a package code on candy bars so consumers can text in to win prizes. As a side effect, the company gains info on what products sell at different times of day.
• Close-Up Toothpaste offers iPods to texters who flirt with fictitious characters in its ‘Rock, Paper, Kiss’ game.
• Hershey Chocolate Co offers purchasers the chance to text the barcode off their products to get a chance to win a trip to the “X Games”.
• McDonald’s gives away “World Cup” soccer tickets to customers who text-message a code they receive with products purchased in UK restaurants.
• Secret Deodorant gives passers-by in NYC a chance to text their innermost secrets and have them displayed on a giant Times Square screen. The company donates money for each secret to a charity for disadvantaged women.
• Starbucks runs a text-based scavenger hunt and trivia game in which participants opt to receive a series of SMS questions on their cellphones. Replies with pictures of the answer give senders a chance to win a vacation.
Time to jump onboard! You can likely re-work one or more of these concepts to help achieve targeted results for your station.

TODAY an online venture called ‘Weblo’ is being launched where you can buy and sell virtual properties. Entrepreneur Rocky Mirza says his new site is like “Monopoly” on steroids. Players use real money to buy the right to real-world properties such as the Taj Mahal, then make money by renting out space or from advertising that runs on the site. They can also make money by selling their properties. And there’s more … you can even buy and sell entire cities, then run for mayor and collect taxes from anyone whose property is part of your city. Sound complicated? Must have something going for it; a major shareholder is Richard Rosenblatt, the co-inventor of MySpace.com. (That quirky little idea seemed to work out okay.)

BAD SPORT:
A Russian soccer coach has had his players beaten up and shot after finding out they’d been taking bribes to lose matches. Stanislav Bernikov, manager of the Metallurg Lipetsk team, which stands 6th in Russia’s 2nd division, had the team’s goalkeeper, captain and forward beaten up by a 5-man gang, then shot with plastic bullets. The incident occurred after the team lost 2 away games and the coach accused the players of throwing matches for moolah. The injured players have been treated for concussion, facial fractures and bullet wounds. Police have launched a criminal investigation. (This guy’s the Bill Cowher of Russia!)
