Tomorrow’s Show Prep Today!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Jimmy Kimmel has nothing but praise for Quinta Brunson after her big win at the 2022 Emmy Awards — even if his comedy bit during the segment rubbed people the wrong way. Kimmel attended the Emmys After Party on Monday, and spoke about the “Abbott Elementary” star and creator’s win, calling her “so unbelievably talented” and a “lovely person”, and saying that he wrote to her after seeing the pilot, to tell her “you made a pilot that any network would be ecstatic to get.” Kimmel was slammed by some on social media after Will Arnett dragged Kimmel onto the stage as they were both set to present the award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Arnett joked that Kimmel was passed-out drunk after having lost yet another Emmy to John Oliver. The problem came when Kimmel stayed on the stage, supposedly unconscious, even after Brunson was announced as the winner and she took the stage to collect her award and deliver a moving speech.

★ Chris Hemsworth doesn’t plan to get quite as ripped for his next appearance as ‘Thor’. The 39-year-old has starred as the God of Thunder since 2011 – but says he won’t bulk up as much in the future. Why? Quote: “Each time I’ve played the character and put the muscle on and put the size on, and then lost it for something else…and I used to say it sort of got easier each time. (For “Thor: Love and Thunder”,) this was particularly hard.” Hemsworth said he found his workout regime to be “exhausting”, and he plans to scale back his training, because “Maybe I’m getting old, but things just started to hurt more” and has a detrimental effect on his energy levels, probably due to overtraining.

★ Alyssa Milano, Virginia Madsen, Gina Torres (“9-1-1: Lone Star”) and Milana Vayntrub (“This Is Us”) have signed on for roles in the feature-length anthology “Give Me an A”, which links together 15 short films, in response to the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade. The film, currently in post-production, will have been completed within 2 months from the date of Roe’s overturning — which eliminated the longstanding constitutional right to abortion — in an effort to ensure it is a response and not a delayed reaction. The creators, cast and crew have made a significant effort to expedite the process in order to start a conversation with audiences about the importance of bodily autonomy. No release details yet.

★ Director James Cameron has announced that “Avatar 4” is in the works, despite the fact that “Avatar 2” hasn’t even been released yet. While Cameron wasn’t actually at the highly-awaited D23 expo, he did disclose via pre-recorded video that the 4th film in the franchise has already begun production. Cameron also shared footage of “Avatar: The Way of Water” at the Disney fan event, which contained scenes of a showdown between ‘Neytiri’ (Zoe Saldana) and ‘Jake Sully’ (Sam Worthington), fighting about whether to leave their home because of all the imposing threats. One journalist marvelled over the film’s special effects, writing: “The Avatar: The Way of Water scenes shown to the D23 crowd suggest it’ll be the most visually stunning cinematic experience of all time. I just hope I care about the story!” The second Avatar film is scheduled for release Dec. 16.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Machine Gun Kelly – He and Megan Fox appeared to squash rumors of a split after channeling “disco” vibes in new photos. Fox took to Instagram Sunday to share pics of the couple’s outfits for Beyoncé’s birthday party. Fox wore a silver bikini top reminiscent of a disco ball, while MGK sported sequined pants, and a pink and white fur jacket. Fox’s caption: “The theme was roller disco.” LINK: https://www.instagram.com/p/CiY6P9HLHHe/
• Ariana Grande – is reportedly planning a collab after she wraps work on her big-screen adaptation of the Broadway classic “Wicked”, in which she’s playing ‘Glinda the Good Witch’. Grammy winner Kali Uchis said on TikTok that Grande has promised to hit the studio with her once she is finished the film, which will be released in 2 parts, in 2024 and 2025.
• (***Caution – language***) Ozzy Osbourne – says that when he played live with Black Sabbath co-founder Tony Iommi Commonwealth Games finale in his hometown of Birmingham last month, he was worried that “these kids don’t know who the f*** I am.”
• Mötley Crüe — are plotting a 2024 US tour. Frontman Vince Neil said after “The Stadium Tour” wrapped in Vegas last week that the group is “far from over”, with a tour alongside Def Leppard booked for 2023, hitting Mexico, South America and Europe. A return to the US is set for 2024, and the group is still in discussions for a new Vegas residency.

SHOOTING THE BULL
NOT QUITE QUIET QUITTING:
Last month’s big buzzword was “quiet quitting”, the concept of performing your job expectations and not going above and beyond. That was closely followed by “quiet firing”, when your employer wants you gone, so they treat you poorly to the point that you want to quit. Now, we have “quiet returning”. What’s that? The act of returning to the workforce after retirement. For many, working in their retirement years is on their terms, not their employer’s, or even on society’s expectations. These days, many recent retirees are saying they want to work at least “a bit” in retirement. In the US, more than 2 million people retired during the first 18 months of the pandemic. Many are now heading back to work. Some cite money worries, tied to inflation. But a full 60% of retirees returning to work said they were simply “looking for something to do.” Joblist CEO Kevin Harrington said: “Many people struggle with how to spend their time after they retire and miss the social connection that work provides.”
(Who’s he kidding? They’re just doing it to avoid the “Honey Do” list!)
(2 million and 4, if you include Mötley Crüe!)

HAPPY NEWS:
➢ If you need some extra motivation to put that phone down, here it is: New research by The Ruhr University Bochum in Germany finds that spending just 30 minutes less on social media daily and replacing that time with physical activity can work significant wonders for mental health. Study subjects who followed this routine for 2 weeks reported feeling much happier, more satisfied, less stressed over COVID-19, and less depressed, in comparison to a control group. And notably, the benefits lasted for as long as 6 months after the study ended. (Their necks hurt less, too!)
➢ Sure, hearing those 3 sweet words, ‘I love you’ definitely makes you happy – but not as happy as when your team wins! A poll found that hearing ‘I love you’ from one’s partner makes people feel good for an average of 4 hours. The boost from a favorite sports team’s victory? Four hours and 9 minutes of happiness! But we’re also happy to report that humanity isn’t completely shallow. Spending time with family was found to give people the longest glow, at 4 hours and 33 minutes, closely followed by a coming home from vacation with a nice tan. And interestingly, finishing a workout leaves people feeling happier for 30 minutes longer than chowing down on junk food. (Also interestingly, after a workout, I’m usually chowing down on junk food – within 30 minutes!)

DISHFUL THINKING:
A new, more efficient and eco-friendly dishwasher has been created by scientists in Germany. They say superheated steam dishwashers will prove more effective than the models available now, which use huge amounts of water and don’t kill all the harmful bacteria on dishes and silverware. The new prototype cleans 99% of bacteria on a plate in just 25 seconds. In a demonstration, a plate sits above a nozzle, from which steam is released. Once the plate reaches a certain temperature, the bacteria are deemed dead. While the new appliances will be more expensive, they would help people save money on water, electricity and detergent in the long run because they are more efficient. The researchers also say they would be ideal for use in restaurants, hotels and hospitals.
(Superheated? I already burn my fingers when I try to unload the dishwasher too soon after running it!) )
(Man, I thought we were done with ‘green’ appliances in the 70s!)

NEW EDITIONS:
If you like to turn a ‘lewk’, regularly ‘pwn’ your friends in Fortnite, or find the ordinary dictionary ‘janky’, Merriam-Webster is hip to your slang. The dictionary has added a new slew of slang among its 370 new definitions. Examples…
⇒ Yeet: (n.) an expression of surprise, approval or excited enthusiasm. (“I get to eat the cookies you baked before we eat dinner? YEET!”)
⇒ Yeet (v.) to throw something without regard for the thing being thrown. (“I yeeted the quiz that I failed right into the trash can.”)
⇒ Janky (adj.): of very poor quality, or not functioning properly. (“My janky computer likes to restart itself in the middle of Zoom meetings.”)
⇒ Sus (adj.): short for suspicious or suspect. (“Isn’t it a bit sus that you never see Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the same location?”)
⇒ Lewk (n.): a fashionable look distinctive to the wearer and noticeable to others. (“RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” contestant Bimini Bon Boulash turned a lewk on the runway when she emerged in a Vivienne Westwood-inspired bridal corset.”)
⇒ Pwn (v.): to dominate and defeat. Pronounced like “own.” (“I totally pwned my opponents in an epic game of tag yesterday.”)
⇒ Baller (adj.): excellent, exciting or extraordinary, especially in a way that is suggestive of a lavish lifestyle. (“It was very baller of you to share your lottery winnings with us.”)
Other words not considered slang, but finally accepted into Merriam-Webster include ‘Pumpkin spice’, ‘LARP’ (short for live action roleplay), ‘Level up’ (Advancing or improving oneself as if you’re playing a game.), and ‘Metaverse’.

DID YOU KNOW?
Marijuana users get a bad reputation for being lazy or unmotivated while high. But a new study has found that may not be true. Researchers from the University of Cambridge say cannabis users don’t show any less motivation to do things than people who avoid the drug. Their study finds “stoners” are actually more likely to enjoy themselves during common situations, like seeing friends and family. (To enjoy time with MY family, cannabis isn’t an option, it’s a requirement!)
