BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ With “Jungle Cruise” crossing the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on the weekend, Disney has already pulled the trigger on a sequel. Stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are set to return as wisecracking skipper ‘Frank Wolff’ and intrepid researcher ‘Dr. Lily Houghton’, for another adventure. The movie, which has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, was in development for more than 15 years before finally making its way to the screen. It is based on the popular Disneyland attraction, which was one of the original rides when the theme park opened in 1955.

★ Paramount is suing its insurer for refusing to cover the vast majority of its losses due to pandemic-related shutdowns on “Mission: Impossible 7.” According to the suit, “Chubb”, the studio’s insurer, says it will pay only $1 million for COVID-19 losses under its “civil authority” policy. Production was delayed 7 times between February 2020 and June 2021, at least 6 of which were due to the pandemic. Paramount had a “cast insurance” policy for the production, with a $100 million coverage limit. Such insurance is intended to cover losses that result when a film’s key personnel — such as star Tom Cruise or director Christopher McQuarrie — is unavailable due to sickness, death or even kidnapping.

★ “The View” will fill Meghan McCain’s slot with a rotating cast of guest conservative co-hosts when it returns for its 25th season. First up will be former Utah Congresswoman Mia Love, who will join moderator Whoopi Goldberg and co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines for the first week, beginning Sept. 7. This will be the first time all co-hosts will be in the studio together since March 2020.  Meghan McCain left the show in August after 4 seasons.

★ Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have been going strong for the past few months and now he’s starring in a new commercial with her mom. Guadalupe “Lupe” Rodriguez appears with Affleck in a new ad for WynnBET’s new sports gambling app. At one point in the ad Affleck walks past Rodriguez while she plays a slot machine. Interestingly, WynnBET reported that Lupe won $2.4 million on a slots game back in 2004 – the same year that Affleck and Lopez ended their first relationship.

• Neil Young – is asking concert promotors to stop putting on live shows until fan safety can be guaranteed. He made the remarks in a post on his website 2 weeks after pulling out of this year’s Farm Aid concert, citing concerns over surges in the Delta variant. Now, he is asking promotors to put fan safety ahead of profit, saying, “I think they should protect the people who are their livelihood.”
• The Police – drummer Stewart Copeland is working on a diary-based book that will focus on the group’s early “starving years”. SHOOTING THE BULL

MASKS ARE INSTRUMENTAL:
As concerts and live theater return, a new study says that safety measures like masks, social distancing, and time limits to events can go a long way toward reducing transmission of COVID-19. But here’s a surprise: Researchers are also recommending masks – for wind instruments! The study, by scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder and University of Maryland, investigated the flow of aerosols during musical and theater performances. It was found that covering the bell of a clarinet with a surgical mask or fitting filter material over the bell of a brass instrument was effective at reducing the amount of aerosol particles from the instrument, as well as reducing the speed at which the particles were expelled. Distance matters as well: The scientists found those who are located closest to performers have the highest risk of transmission. But performance time was found to be an even more significant factor. Researchers say instrumental performances should be limited to 30 minutes indoors or 60 minutes outdoors.
(Now we just need to convince Foo Fighters and Blake Shelton to play clarinets!)
(Well, it’s not like COVID is the first thing that was ever passed around at a concert!)
(I’ve been front-row at a Cardi B show. If I didn’t catch something then, I certainly won’t now!)

NO PRESENTS, PRESENTLY:
The shortage of lumber during the pandemic – we managed to survive. The toilet paper shortage – we got by. But this might be the toughest yet – especially if you’re…say…12 or younger. Toymakers are saying that the global shipping crisis and labor shortages could limit their ability to keep stores stocked throughout the holiday shopping season. CEOs of 2 major toy companies have gone on record as saying they fear supply chain woes and the resulting inflated prices will mean many children won’t get the toys they want for Christmas. The bosses, whose companies sell brands including Fisher Price, K’nex, Care Bears, Little Tykes and Bratz, say not only have prices of products increased by about 23%, the cost shipping via container has gone up from $3,200 to $22,000. AND a trucker shortage is hurting efforts to stock warehouses and ultimately move toys onto store shelves. Both executives suggest parents get their holiday shopping done early.
(…or celebrate Christmas later?)
(Hey…I was a kid when Tickle Me Elmo came out. I know ALL ABOUT toy shortages!)
(It sounds as though a lot of kids might have made the “naughty list” this year, and will have to do without!)

I’LL DRINK TO THESE:
➢ Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is an age-old recommendation that many believe helps keep your entire body healthy. But a new study says getting enough water may keep your heart from failing decades later. It’s a pretty complicated study, but, bottom line, the researchers from the National Institutes of Health in Maryland found that maintaining good hydration throughout life “helps slow down or prevent the changes within the heart that lead to heart failure.” (Of course, you’ll spend any extra time you get going to the bathroom…)
➢ Drinking up to three cups of coffee a day may protect your heart, a new study finds.  Experts from Semmelweis University in Budapest looked into the association between coffee habits and their impact on heart attacks and strokes. They found that regular coffee consumption of 0.5 to 3 cups a day is associated with a decreased risk of death from heart disease, stroke and early death from any cause when compared to non-coffee drinkers. Other studies have found drinking moderate amounts of coffee can protect adults from type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s, computer back pain and more. (Never in my life have I felt more smug than I feel right now…)

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING:
➢ Make a list:  Assign a budget and stick to it. (And for God’s sake, DON’T bring the kids along!)
➢ Find sales:  For back-to-school clothes, shop end of summer sales and focus on apparel the kids can wear all year long. (Whether they like it or not!)
➢ Buy in bulk:  Kids can really go through the essentials like paper, pencils, glue sticks and notebooks quickly. (And backpacks. Trust me.)
➢ Do your online homework:  Follow your favorite brands and retailers on social media and sign up for their email newsletters. It’s a great way to stay in the know about the best deals. Sometimes they even have exclusive sales for their followers. (No fair! 5 more days of summer vacation, and I have to do homework?)
➢ Buy masks in bulk (again this year…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Your sense of smell is stronger when you’re hungry, according to researchers at Northwestern University. More specifically, what they found is that a person’s nose becomes less sensitive to the odor of foods if they have just eaten a similar item. For example, you are less likely to crave a cinnamon bun after smelling one if you’ve just eaten a sweet treat. But as you know, even a slight hint of cinnamon bun smell will drive you to go buy one if you haven’t eaten yet. (Oddly, my family experiences the exact opposite reaction when they smell something I’m trying to cook…)

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “September”. In Latin ‘septem’ means ‘seventh’. That’s because back in the day when the New Year started in March, September was the 7th month.

• “First Day of Spring” in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, so designated by tradition, not any relation to the Vernal Equinox.

• “No Rhyme Nor Reason Day”, a celebration of words that don’t rhyme with any other words (aka refractory rhymes), ie: angel, month, orange, purple, silver. (Although we do take exception to including ‘purple’. Have these people never heard of a “purple nurple”?)

• “Building Code Staff Appreciation Day”. It’s like “Valentine’s Day” for planning board workers.

• “American Chess Day”, celebrating the Sept. 1, 1972 victory of American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer over Russian champ Boris Spassky, making him the first American to win the world title. Chess is often called “The Game of Kings”. (If you forget the rules of Chess, don’t worry — you’re allowed to check!)

• “Pink Cadillac Day”, They have an iconic place in American culture, most notably because of Elvis Presley. He mentioned a pink Cadillac in his first charting single, ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ (1955), and bought his first pink Cadillac around the same time.

• “Ginger Cat Appreciation Day”, Ginger cats are more likely to be male than female because the “ginger gene” which produces the orange color is on the X chromosome. There are roughly 3 males to 1 female ginger cat.
