BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ TV icon Katie Couric is battling breast cancer. In a post on her website, The 65-year-old former “Today” show anchor shared she was diagnosed in June. Cancer is no stranger to Couric. She lost her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer in 1998. Her sister died from pancreatic cancer and her mother-in-law died from ovarian cancer. She wrote: “Given my family’s history of cancer, why would I be spared? My reaction went from, “Why me? to Why not me?” She underwent surgery in July and started radiation treatment early this month. She also reminded readers that “we need to stay on top of our screenings, advocate for ourselves, and make sure everyone has access to the diagnostic tools that could very well save their life.”

★ What is Jeopardy!’s fate? Answer: Expanding into the future. The long running ABC game show is looking ahead to more questions and answers as it plans to expand the franchise. Executive producer Michael Davies recently shared some possibilities, including potentially creating a pro-league version featuring the top Jeopardy! players. He said he has also considered the idea of a spin-off dedicated to pop culture trivia. He told The New York Times about his vision, saying, “It seemed ridiculous to me that we have this sport where every single year we take all of our best players — we take our LeBrons and our Dwyanes — and we switch them all out.” Davies said he would want the master league to air live, though he admitted, the thought of that makes his staff nervous.

★ “Monster — Dahmer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” the limited drama series starring Evan Peters as the infamous serial killer, has debuted atop the Netflix Top 10 English TV list with 196 million hours viewed, making it the most-viewed title this week. Only “Squid Game”, “All of Us Are Dead”, season 4 of “Stranger Things” and season 2 of “Bridgerton” have beaten it in the period since the streamer changed the way it reports ratings figures in June 2021. Released Sept. 21, Dahmer has sparked questions on social media concerning the ethics of dramatizing the real-life story for entertainment purposes, with the victims’ family members saying it is “retraumatizing” them.

★ If your stomach can handle it, here’s your chance to own one of the most iconic props from “The Walking Dead” — Negan’s barbed wire-wrapped bat, ‘Lucille’. The bat has been at the center of some of the series’ most shocking moments, and now it’s available at Goldin Auctions, with an opening bid of $3,000, but it’ll sell for much more. If you watch TWD, you know Lucille. During the season 6 finale/season 7 premiere, ‘Glen’ one of the show’s most beloved characters, was brutally killed by Lucille … at the hands of Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Other iconic TWD props up for auction include Daryl’s 1992 Honda Nighthawk motorcycle and Rick’s (rubber) Colt Python stunt gun. The auction wraps Oct. 15. The Walking Dead, which premiered in 2010 — will air its series finale in November.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Harry Styles – His hit ‘As It Was’ has become the longest-running #1 in the US by a British artist, ever. The song has scored a 15th week atop the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the record jointly held by Mark Ronson (‘Uptown Funk’) and Elton John (‘Candle in the Wind’). Styles is also currently at the top of the US box office chart with his film “Don’t Worry Darling”.
• Maroon 5 – Amid singer Adam Levine’s cheating scandal, the group has announced a Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM between March 24 and Aug. 12 next year. Tickets go on sale Oct. 3.
• Shakira – has been ordered to stand trial in Spain over tax fraud charges. Tues., a judge approved a trial against the Colombian singer over charges on 6 counts of tax fraud, accusing her of owing about $20 million in taxes. She could face up to 8 years in prison.
• Foo Fighters — Guitarist Chris Shiflett says he expects the band to release new music in the future. The group’s next steps have been uncertain since the March 25 death of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Shiflett said most people have been polite enough not to mention the “elephant in the room”, but at some point, the group will get “around to putting out another Foo Fighters record”.
• David Bowie – His handwritten lyrics to the classic ‘Starman’ were sold at auction for more than £200,000 (US $214,500), 5 times their estimated value. And in November, the iconic spacesuit he rocked in his 1980 video for ‘Ashes to Ashes’ will also go under the hammer. It’s expected to go for $92,000.
• Jake Owen – His new single ‘Up There Down Here’ is a tribute to angels on earth. On Instagram, he wrote: “I’m really proud of this song and this video. The thought was about how so many guys out there just like us, have these angels watching over us. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3695ybp7
• Morgan Evans – During his headlining set at the CMC Rocks QLD Festival in his home country of Australia, he sat down at a piano to play the unreleased song ‘How Long’ about his split from Kelsea Ballerini, including the line: “How many times did you say you loved me when it wasn’t true?” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2p8kbe89
• Blake Shelton – His wife, Gwen Stefani, used to think his accent was fake. During Monday’s “The Voice”, first-time coach Camila Cabello asked Stefani: “Has his accent rubbed off on you? I feel like it’s gonna rub off on me a little.” Gwen replied that she used wonder when he was going to stop talking like that, and said: “But then, it’s actually his real voice! I kinda got used to it.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

SUIT YOURSELF:
A company is using NASA spacesuit technology to make clothing to reduce hot flashes in women. That’s right — the same self-regulating materials that keep astronauts from exploding in space are now being used in clothing to reduce effects of menopause. London-based Fifty One Apparel has come up with the novel approach to making women feel more comfortable in their all-purpose fashions made for lounging, the gym, the office – plus intergalactic travel if needed. The company, named after the average age people experience menopause, turns high-tech fabric that was first designed to help keep astronauts comfortable inside their spacesuits into clothing that “put the freeze on hot flushes,” according to the Fifty One Apparel website. Instead of wicking away sweat, the clothes actually keep your body temperature stable and control the production of moisture before it starts, using technology first incorporated by NASA into spacesuit gloves.
(I told my wife about this. She said: “Challenge accepted!”)
(And as a result, guys don’t have to go to a galaxy far, far away!)

NITPICK YOUR PARTNER:
While we’d all love to stay in the “honeymoon” phase of our relationship forever, a new study finds stress can make even the most loving couples only focus on their partner’s most annoying habits. Researchers at University of Texas at Austin say ongoing stress causes men and women to become more critical of their partner’s negative behavior. These unpopular acts can include anything from a spouse breaking a promise, showing anger or impatience, or criticizing their partner. The team reported that people who experienced stressful life events outside of their relationship, such as problems at work, were “especially likely to notice if their partner behaved in an inconsiderate manner.” The results of their study of 79 newlywed couples show a single stressful day is not enough to cause couples to nitpick their partner’s bad habits. But a long-term buildup of stress does cause them to focus more on their lover’s inconsiderate behavior.
(And that, folks, in a nutshell, provides remarkable insight into my marriage!)
(I can’t imagine something like this happening in my relationship. You know what that means, right? Either my wife’s life is perfect…or I am!)

OBVIOUS DEPARTMENT OF OBVIOUSNESS:
What part of the day do you look forward to most? That first coffee? Quitting time? Dinner? Your favorite TV show? It would seem none of the above. According to a survey, for 4 in 5 of us, it’s coming home to our furry friends. In the poll of 2,000 US pet owners, 71% also said they regularly put their pet’s needs before their own. Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Chewy, the survey aimed to uncover the degree to which pet parents prioritize their pets’ happiness when making major life decisions and planning their daily activities. And do we ever! Pets were found to influence what trips they take (40%), where they live (37%) and the people they hang out with (35%), and 36% admitted their pet even impacts how they spend money. Nearly half said they plan their free time around being with their pet – so much so that 39% would rather cancel plans to spend more time with their pet. And almost two-thirds (62%) of respondents have gotten another pet for their pet.
(We would…but there’s no more room on the bed!)

STRET-T-T-C-C-H-H-ING THAT DOLLAR:
Inflation has been making things extremely difficult for many. But it’s not the first time people have had to get creative in order to make ends meet. A Twitter thread asked what extraordinary methods people’s parents used to keep them fed and sheltered. Here are some of them…
✓ We used plain bread as hot dog buns — and for dessert: margarine & cinnamon on bread.
✓ Pork and beans sandwiches.
✓ When they knew exactly how many days it takes for a check to clear at every grocery store around. (I’m old, back when it took time lol).
✓ Filling the empty shampoo bottle with water and giving it a good shake!
✓ Water in cereal.
✓ When I went to other houses and they had paper towels, I thought they were rich.
✓ Wearing bread bags over my socks because my shoes had holes in them.
✓ Mustard sandwiches at school for lunch.
✓ My brother’s favorite breakfast was bread torn up into pieces with milk and sugar on it. It was called “Kitty Soup”.
✓ BLT’s without the ‘B’.
✓ I got cassette tapes with songs recorded off the radio as Xmas presents. And was thrilled with it.
-Twitter, DidYouKnow?

DID YOU KNOW?
What’s the best way to maintain peak brain health as we age? Scientists in Norway sought to simplify the countless studies on preventing cognitive decline, and condensed them to 3 recommendations: Physical exercise, social activity, and passionate interests and hobbies. The study was published in Brain Sciences. (Does it help that I’m passionate about NOT exercising?)
