BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE*** ★ Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of rock group Smash Mouth, died yesterday at age 56. No cause of death was shared, but Harwell had been receiving hospice care, and it had been reported he was in the final stages of liver failure. He died at home in Boise, Idaho, with family and friends by his side, according to the band’s manager. Smash Mouth is best known for its chart-topping singles ‘All Star’ and ‘I’m a Believer’. During Harwell’s career, the band was nominated for a Grammy for All Star, a song which later achieved cult status after its appearance on the soundtrack to the 2001 animated film “Shrek.”

★ Joe Jonas and actress Sophie Turner are reportedly on the “cusp of divorce”, according to sources cited by TMZ. Fans have been speculating that the celeb couple were splitting up based on photos of them without their wedding rings taken in recent weeks. The insider said the couple “have had serious problems” for the past 6 months at least, and Jonas has consulted with a few LA divorce lawyers. The couple also recently sold their Miami mansion, which they purchased only a year ago, indicating some changes in their lifestyle.

★ Chris Rock and Diplo managed to escape the treacherous mud-filled Burning Man festival in the flooded Nevada desert — with the help of a fan in a pickup truck. The comedian and the DJ trekked through 6 miles of mud Saturday looking for someone to give them a ride as roughly 73,000 people were stuck at the festival due to weather. Diplo shared a video to Instagram where he and Rock sat in the bed of a pickup truck with 5 five other people and bags of equipment. He wrote: “I legit walked the side of the road for hours with my thumb out cuz I have a show in DC tonight and didn’t want to let y’all down.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/43avx8jk

★ On the final weekend of the summer box office season, “The Equalizer 3″ took top spot with a solid 4-day long weekend take of $42 million domestically, when Monday estimates are included. Meanwhile, “Barbie” became the 14th film in box office history to pass $600 million in domestic grosses, adding $13 million over the 4-day weekend to bring its total to $612 million in North America. With $1.38 billion worldwide, “Barbie” has passed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to become the year’s highest grossing film.

★ Amanda Seyfried won’t be attending the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival — even though she could. She took to Instagram over the weekend to reveal she wouldn’t be making an appearance at TIFF to promote her new movie “Seven Veils,” despite being granted a waiver amid the ongoing Hollywood strikes. Seyfried wrote: “I am SO PROUD of this movie and it hurts my heart not to stand next to the beautiful people who helped create this special film at our @tiff_net premiere…@sagaftra has given us a waiver to promote this fully, magically independent Canadian movie but it doesn’t feel right to head to the fest in light of the strike.” The movie’s world premiere screening is set for this Sunday.

★ Bradley Cooper appears to have another winner on his hands. The actor-director’s latest film, “Maestro”, made its debut at the Venice International Film Festival over the weekend, and received a rousing reception at its festival premiere. The Cooper-directed biopic — in which he also portrays famed composer Leonard Bernstein — was met with a standing ovation that went on for a full 7 minutes. While neither Cooper nor co-star Carey Mulligan were in attendance due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Bernstein’s 3 children tearfully welcomed the applause, waving to the crowd.

★ Because the whole world revolves around Taylor Swift, “The Exorcist: Believer”, David Gordon Green’s reboot of the horror franchise, is moving its release date forward by a week to Oct. 6 after the surprise announcement that Swift would release an Eras Tour concert movie on Oct. 13, Believer’s original release date. In announcing the news, horror movie impresario Jason Blum tweeted: “Look what you made me do,” referencing the Swift hit single, and included the hashtag #TaylorWins. SHOOTING THE BULL

ELON-TERM PLANNING:
Elon Musk wants you to use his newly-branded “X” as an “everything app”. And with that in mind, he plans to launch video and audio calling capability on the social media app. Users will not need a phone number, and the features will be available on Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android and personal computers, he wrote in a tweet (or whatever we’re calling those now…). He did not give a timeline for the launch. After rebranding Twitter as X, Musk indicated he would turn the platform into a “super app” offering a range of services, including messaging, social networking, and peer-to-peer payments. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/238p2wrx
(I’ve got a great name for it: “Calling your “X”)
(Uh, Elon – there’s a reason I don’t have my number listed in any of my social media profiles…!)

BE-LEAF IT:
It could be a great thing for those who are a bit timid about needles. Or for those who aren’t really thrilled about vaccines in general. Researchers at the University of California-Riverside are working on a plan to replace your shots – with a salad. They plan to grow edible plants that carry the same medication as an mRNA vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine is one of the many inoculations that use messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to defeat viruses. They work by teaching the immune system to recognize and attack a certain infectious disease. The UC-Riverside team says if they’re successful, the public could eat plant-based mRNA vaccines — which could also survive at room temperature, unlike some vaccines. They are currently testing using spinach and lettuce, and say that some day, we could grow our own vaccination-plants in our gardens.
(Spinach and lettuce? Is there a reason they couldn’t grow it in something tastier? Like chocolate or ice cream?)
(Yikes – The way MY green-thumb is, if I tried to grow a vaccination-plant, I’d end up causing the next pandemic!)

SOMEONE SHOULD WRITE A SONG ABOUT THIS:
Over the summer, you probably, at least once, spent hours fighting for tickets, picking the perfect concert outfit, talked excitedly with friends, and eventually got to watch your musical hero perform live and in person – whether it be Beyonce, Taylor Swift or Luke Combs. But then what? Apparently “post-concert depression” is a thing. After the anticipation, effort, and excitement of a monumental concert (or other big event), it’s normal to experience a slump or even depression-like symptoms, according to psychologist Michele Leno. While she notes that the symptoms are typically mild and don’t usually get to the point of actual depression, she does offer some tips on how to get back on track after an exhilarating experience like a big concert that was a high point of your summer:
• Identify to yourself why the event was so meaningful.
• Reflect on why it made you so happy, what you enjoyed so much about it.
• Make more moments of joy – whether they involve meeting up with friends or buying a new outfit.
• Live vicariously through others. When you see social media posts about other great concerts, take a moment to enjoy what your friends are showing you.
• Ignore the haters who don’t understand your letdown afterward.
• Reach out for help if you need it. Maybe talk to others who went to the same show, who might be feeling the same way.
(My post-concert blues have a lot more to do with having to pay my Visa bill, than any kind of letdown because Taylor Swift has left town!)
(Note: If you are experiencing post-concert blues after attending “Burning Man”, don’t sweat it. You have every right to be depressed after that fiasco!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Researchers are using computer simulations to determine the best conditions for a human settlement on Mars. The team at George Mason University have determined it would take just 22 people to establish a colony on the Red Planet. And what type of person would be ideal for this endeavor? According to the simulations, which span up to 28 Earth years, agreeable personality types are best suited for the job, while neurotics showed the least capacity for adaptation. (No kidding. I get thrown off for 3 days when we have Tacos on a Wednesday!)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.05.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Be Late for Something Day”, sponsored by the Procrastinators’ Club, a day to delay anything you can. So maybe celebrate this tomorrow?
• “Cheese Pizza Day”, saluting the favorite order of cheapskates everywhere.
• “National Shrink Day”, celebrating psychologists and psychiatrists. September 5 was chosen because it is Bob Newhart’s birthday. He played psychologist ‘Robert Hartley’ on “The Bob Newhart Show”.
• “International Day of Charity”, observed annually on the anniversary of the death of Mother Theresa (1997), to recognize the role that charity—both through charitable organizations and individuals—plays in alleviating human suffering and humanitarian crises.
• “Telephone Tuesday”, based on the clear spike in telephone calls experienced today by businesses and organizations. The high number of calls are partly due to unmanned telephones during the long weekend. Also, summer is ending, school is starting, and people want to take care of things they’ve been putting off since spring arrived. (Plus, Little Johnny’s teacher is already calling about his behavior…)
• “Another Look Unlimited Day”, when you’re supposed to look around your home for things you don’t need, but instead of throwing them out, give them to a charity or to friends — or find a way to repurpose the item. (It’s a bit easier to ‘clear things out’ now, with the kids back in school!)
