Ah, Some BS to Look Forward to In the Morning!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Al Pacino’s girlfriend, Noor Alfallah, has filed for custody of their infant son, Roman. According to documents, Alfallah filed for full physical custody of their 3-month-old child, and requested that Pacino have “reasonable visitation.” The couple was first romantically linked in April 2022, and Alfallah gave birth to Roman at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on June 6. According to the filing, Alfallah, who is 29, is requesting that they share a joint legal custody grant of their young son, which would give 83-year-old Pacino a say on his education, religion and medical treatment.

★ Christine Baumgartner has been ordered to pay her estranged husband Kevin Costner $14,000 in attorneys’ fees. The ruling was handed out Wednesday after Costner’s attorney Laura Wasser argued that a series of requests for information sent to Baumgartner about the couple’s prenuptial agreement weren’t necessary. She argued that the series of filings cost the “Yellowstone” star $14,237.50, and the judge agreed. Baumgartner’s attorney also argued that there were still matters to be discussed regarding the pair’s prenup, which reportedly entitled her to more than $1 million.

★ Travis Barker is speaking out after his wife Kourtney Kardashian underwent “emergency fetal surgery”. On Wednesday, the Blink-182 drummer shared his gratitude in a post on X, writing: “God is great. I flew home for a life-threatening emergency surgery for our baby that I’m so grateful went well. I want to say thank you for all the support.” He also said the band’s tour would resume tonight. Last Friday, it was announced that Blink-182 was postponing their European tour dates after Barker had to rush home for an “urgent family matter.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4jb676a6

★ Oscar-winning actress and women’s rights activist Patricia Arquette will receive the TIFF Groundbreaker Award during the 48th edition of the Toronto Film Festival. The honor will come during the 2023 TIFF Tribute Awards on Sunday. In a statement, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said: “Being one of Hollywood’s most audacious talents, Patricia consistently challenges conventions and elevates the discourse on salary equity for women through her influential platform.” Michelle Yeoh received the tribute last year.

★ As if childbirth wasn’t already the scariest thing you could do with your body, the trailer for “American Horror Story: Delicate” is here, to make things worse. Emma Roberts plays ‘Anna Alcott’, a famous actress desperate to get pregnant. Matt Czuchry plays ‘Dexter’, her husband, while Cara Delevingne plays ‘Meg’, a mysterious woman who appears to be an ultrasound technician. And of course, Kim Kardashian plays ‘Siobhan Walsh’, a former actress who seems to be against the idea of Anna having a kid. Kimmy K’s acting chops are on full display in the new trailer, which starts with her telling Roberts she’s an “A-list star now,” and to “focus on the good.” Later, she asks Roberts if she wants an Oscar as much as she wants a baby, and is then seen singing Roberts a slightly terrifying lullaby. ★ “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is coming, and screenwriter Craig Mazin says it’s the most outlandish one yet. In a roundtable discussion, Mazin revealed that Disney has officially ordered the belated sequel, saying: “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird…And they did!” Mazin said that after the script was accepted, “the strike happened and (now) everyone’s waiting around.” No word on whether Johnny Depp’s iconic character ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ will return.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER:
The old saying goes: “Opposites attract”. Well, maybe not. Psychological researchers have found “no compelling evidence” that is the case, after reviewing several million couples’ case studies spanning back 100 years. A report from the University of Colorado Boulder says the team analyzed more than 130 personality traits, such as political allegiance, substance use and even sexual history, and found that in a vast majority — between 82% and 89% of those traits, “partners were more likely than not to be similar.” They determined that traits such as political and religious attitudes, level of education, and certain measures of IQ “showed particularly high correlations.” The researchers say they hope their findings will encourage people to “learn more about how and why people end up in the relationships they do.”
(That’s easy for me to answer: Because she agreed to take me!)
(They’re right – people tend to wind up with partners who are similar to themselves. Just ask my stunningly attractive, brilliant wife!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Emily Benschoter isn’t quiet quitting – she’s coiffing creatively. The 29-year-old says when she landed her job, there was no interview for the front-of-house role in the hospitality industry that she eventually landed — meaning the manager had no idea what she looked like. But when she revealed that her hair is pink, it was suggested she wear a wig. In her first of many TikToks showing off her head coverings, she wrote: “When you have pink hair but corporate does not approve so you wear terrible wigs”. The clip shows a blond, layered, choppy ‘do to go with a blue golf shirt with the nametag “Ugly” on it. In her series documenting what she calls “malicious compliance”, she shows how her look has gotten increasingly appalling, including one inspired by “I Dream of Jeannie”, complete with a bald cap and brunette ponytail. Then there’s the ‘Peggy Bundy flip’, a spiky number that gives ‘Cynthia’ from “The Rugrats” vibes, and then there’s the wavy brown one with a thick, curly beard. As for the reaction she gets at work, she said: “Loud laughs and very difficult to not crack up when we make eye contact.” (She couldn’t just wear a hat?) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2p8mfr9y
➢ I’m not sure you want to know this – but some people definitely do. Chinese researchers say they have a solution to these gross bathroom surprises – toilet skid marks. That’s right – a team at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology developed a non-stick toilet bowl surface that could make toilet brushes obsolete. They used 3D printing technology to make what they call an abrasion-resistant super-slippery flush toilet (ARSFT). Demonstrations show “dyed synthetic feces” sliding seamlessly down the bowl, without leaving anything for the next user to find. (Oh! So THAT’S what toilet brushes are for? Who knew?)

RUDEST THINGS YOU CAN DO AT THE GROCERY STORE:
(According to etiquette experts, and just in time for your weekend supermarket run…)
✗ Using the express line with too many items: There, now that we have the most obvious one out of the way, let’s begin for real…
✗ Ignoring aisle traffic rules: It’s like driving: Don’t block others, stop or change directions suddenly, or cross multiple lanes of traffic without checking for oncoming traffic. (And try to avoid collisions?)
✗ Touching and opening things without buying them: Don’t. Just. Don’t. (Especially bananas!)
✗ Disrespecting personal space: Remember COVID? Show consideration for your fellow shoppers.
✗ Taking things from other people’s carts: Really? People need to be told this?
✗ Holding up the checkout line: Stay off your phone, and have your payment card ready. (And don’t run back to the produce section when you spot a bruise on one of your apples!)
✗ “Returning” items to random places: If you change your mind, especially if it is something that should be refrigerated, put it back, or give it to a staff member.
✗ Not returning your cart: There. I thought we’d end on the other obvious one. Remember: Whether you return your grocery cart or not is the greatest proof of character there is. (Don’t be one of “them”.)
(What would you like to add to the list?)
(I can think of a few things that are ruder…)

DID YOU KNOW?
They say a dog is ‘man’s best friend’, but a new study has found they may actually be more attuned to the higher-pitched voices of women. An analysis of brain scans by researchers from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology and Eötvös Loránd University in Hungry suggest dogs really do listen when we talk to them. What’s more, they do so in a way that is oddly similar to human babies, with a preference for certain tones. The scientists believe this may be due to the fact that women more often speak to dogs with exaggerated elements of speech, such as tone, stress, rhythm and emotion, much they way they tend to speak to infants. (My dog ignores male and female voices equally!)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.08.23
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Ampersand Day”, a celebration of the ‘&’ symbol. The term is believed to have evolved circa 1820-30 as a contraction of ‘and per se’.
• “International Literacy Day”, established by the UN in 1967 to promote reading & writing programs. Worldwide, 1-in-5 adults are illiterate, and 75 million children are not in school. Millions leave school without a level of literacy adequate for productive participation in today’s information society. LINK: https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/literacyday
• “World Physical Therapy Day”, initiated in 1951 to recognize the work that physical therapists do for their patients and community (when you need ’em, you love ’em!)
• “Stand Up To Cancer Day”, Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) is an organization that brings together scientists around the world to take part in collaborative cancer research. It raises funds and awareness about the disease — and how everyone is affected by cancer in some way. LINK: https://standuptocancer.org/
• “Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day”, honoring the special RNs who are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to patients with cancer and blood disorders.
• “Pardon Day”, a day to seek or offer forgiveness where needed. (My favorite word is “pardon”. It’s a problem when people ask me what my favorite word is…)
• “Star Trek Day”, the first episode of the original TV Series aired on September 8, 1966. Star Trek was first seen in Canada on the 6th — 2 days before the US got to see it.
• “Actors Day”, take part in your local theater, whether it’s a high school, college, or a youth theater in your community. Or simply support your local theater by donating money, theater props, or buying tickets to see a play. (The fact that Actors Day takes place the same day that William Shatner debuted in “Star Trek” is purely coincidental!)
SATURDAY-
• “Teddy Bear Day”, honoring the first and most popular plush animal toy that was inspired by the helpless cub that US president Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot while hunting in 1902. Morris & Rose Mitchom, owners of a Brooklyn NY candy store, took credit for creating the first ‘Teddy Bear’, but German toymaker Steiff may have already been making them.
• “Wonderful Weirdos Day”, saluting all people who are . . . well, kinda quirky. Know any? If you’re typically on the prim and proper side, use this day to let loose.
• “International Sudoku Day”, today was chosen because 9/9 is symbolic within Sudoku. Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle with the objective to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, row, and 3×3 sub-grid contains all the digits from 1 to 9. The name itself means “single number.”
• “Aunt’s Day”, to celebrate the relationship they have with their nieces and nephews. Maybe you have a special aunt who spoiled you when you were a kid, bringing you special treats and gifts. (Or when you were a teen – bought you liquor behind your parents’ backs!)
• “Wiener Schnitzel Day”, dedicated to a traditional Austrian dish which belongs to the best-known specialties of Viennese cuisine. It’s a very thin slice of veal which is breaded and then deep fried in clarified butter or lard.
• “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day”, raising awareness about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and the plight of those who struggle with FASD. The first “FASDay” was observed on 9/9/99, to signify that a woman should abstain from alcohol during the 9 months of pregnancy.
SUNDAY-
• “International Make Up Day”, but it’s got nothing to do with face paint. If there’s someone you’re estranged from, this is the day to talk to them to see if the relationship can be salvaged. (When’s “International Make OUT Day”?)
• “TV Dinner Day”, In 1953, Swanson changed the prepackaged meal business forever by introducing the TV Dinner, consisting of turkey, cornbread dressing, peas, and sweet potatoes. By 1962, they had stopped using the name TV Dinner, but the term remains synonymous with any prepackaged dinner purchased frozen from a store and heated at home.
• “Swap Ideas Day”, because bouncing ideas off people is great for getting those creative juices flowing. Today you’re encouraged to trade ideas with others, to foster a sense of teamwork. (Good idea!)
• “World Suicide Prevention Day”, to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world. LINK: https://www.iasp.info/
• “Sew Be It Day”, on this day in 1846, Elias Howe was awarded the first American patent on a sewing machine. The first sewing machines were actually made in France in the 1830s. (Or sew it would seam…)
• “National Hot Dog Day”, (There’s also a “Hot Dog Day” in July – just go with it!) 5 things to know about everyone’s favorite street meat:
→ It is estimated that over 7 billion are eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
→ The term “hot dog” is credited to sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan. At a baseball game in New York in 1901, vendors began selling hot dachshund sausages in rolls.
→ The most popular condiment for adults is mustard, while children prefer ketchup.
→ The first words Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse ever uttered in a cartoon were “hot dogs” in “The Karnival Kid” in 1929.
→ The average American eats approximately 60 hot dogs per year.
• It’s also “Hug Your Hound Day”, “Pet Memorial Day”, and “Grandparents Day”, just in case you needed some good feels this weekend!
