BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The rumors appear to be true. After more than 4 years together, Leonardo DiCaprio and Camila Morrone have split. People is reporting that the 47-year-old Oscar winner and 25-year-old model have called it quits. Reportedly, “sources close to the couple” confirm they’ve gone their separate ways. The couple fiercely guarded their privacy after first being seen together in public in January 2018, in Aspen, Colorado. The made their public debut at the 2020 Oscars, where they sat together in the front row. In August, Morrone was spotted in St. Tropez with her mother. DiCaprio, meanwhile, has been spotted out to dinner with friends in Los Angeles as recently as last week.

★ Jordan Peele isn’t saying “Nope” to a sequel of the sci-fi thriller. The director addressed fan theories regarding the mysterious character listed as ‘Nobody’ on IMDb in an interview, hinting there might be a sequel on its way. He told the New York Times: “The story of that character has yet to be told…Which is another frustrating way of saying, I’m glad people are paying attention.” Peele went on to say that he is not done “telling all these stories”. ‘Nobody’ is played by Michael Busch, and while the character didn’t make the movie, he can be seen in the trailer for Nope.

★ Ben Affleck is having a great month. On the heels of his second wedding to Jennifer Lopez and honeymoon in Italy, he’s found a buyer for his Pacific Palisades home. Real estate sources say that he has accepted an offer on the 7-bedroom estate, which he listed for $30 million. The home is 13,500 square feet of pure luxury, with all the bells and whistles, including a pool, spa, walk-in wine cellar, theater and gym. He listed it 3 weeks ago, and he and J Lo are planning to move into her Bel-Air home once a massive remodel is complete. In the meantime, they’re renting James Packer’s $60 million Bev Hills compound.

★ Dwayne Johnson is known for his intense workouts and strict diet, but a director who previously worked with him has revealed just how truly dedicated he is to maintaining his shredded physique. Stephen Merchant, who directed 2019’s “Fighting With My Family” starring Johnson, spoke about the former WWE wrestler’s “regimented” eating schedule. He says that “someone told” him that when Johnson goes out for dinner, he brings his own food to the restaurant and has them heat it up, because his diet is so structured. Merchant also told the tale of a meeting with Johnson in Texas just before WrestleMania, when, according to him, The Rock’s “alarm would go off at like 3:17 p.m. and he would go to the fridge and there would be turkey and rice with ‘3:17 p.m.’ written on it, and he would microwave it.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Demi Lovato — has scored her (***correct, again***) 8th consecutive top 10 album with their latest, “Holy Fvck.” That means Lovato has charted in the top 10 for all of her full-length efforts so far. Her latest effort debuted at #7 with 33,000 equivalent album units, according to Billboard.
• Charlie Puth — has teased a new song. On Instagram, he shared a video that shows his process of creating music, and in it, he asks the camera: “What if there was a song called ‘Charlie Be Quiet?'” The high-energy recording then begins with the words: “Charlie be quiet don’t make a sound.” LINK: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch4q-EFoHhz/
• Britney Spears and Elton John — are set to release an extended version of their new hit single ‘Hold Me Closer’, according to a UK newspaper. The song has already topped the charts in 40 countries.
• Van Halen — A new coffee table book photo book of Eddie Van Halen, “Ed By Zloz”, will be released this month. The book, by legendary photographer Neil Zlozower, contains 384 full-color pages, including many rare pics. It’s $150 at the Van Halen website. LINK:  https://tinyurl.com/46vk86fx
• The Monkees — Micky Dolenz is suing the FBI. In 1967, an informant attended a Monkees concert, and took notes. About 10 years ago, a portion of this file was released, claiming subliminal messages were depicted on the screen which constituted “left-wing intervention of a political nature.”
• Craig Morgan – On Nov. 11, he’ll release “God, Family, Country (Deluxe Edition)”. The project, out on Veterans Day and coinciding with his headlining show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, features 14 tunes, including his current single ‘How You Make A Man’. It’s 1 of 4 previously unreleased songs.
• Thompson Square – The Grammy-nominated duo is stepping back from their touring schedule to allow Shawna Thompson the space to focus on her health. She’ll be using the time to prepare for her scheduled back surgery to correct complications from a recent injury.
• Dolly Parton & Kelly Clarkson – A new duet version of Parton’s hit ‘9 to 5’ has been produced, featuring Clarkson’s vocals alongside Parton’s original recording. It was created for the new documentary “Still Working 9 to 5”, coming to select theaters Sept. 16. The new version of the song drops Sept. 9. LINK: https://youtu.be/QHJiCkmGWtw

SHOOTING THE BULL

PUMPKIN ENTICE:
It doesn’t matter that the calendar says it’s still summer – coffee shops, bakeries and grocery stores are rolling out the taste of fall – pumpkin spice. More than $500 million is spent on pumpkin spice-flavored stuff in the US each year. That might not surprise you. But why is it that we love it so much? Matt Johnson, a Boston-based psychologist who specializes in the application of psychology to marketing, says we love the taste because it reminds us of fall and the warm feelings of family, home and nostalgia the season brings — our brains associate those warm feelings with this particular flavor. He says that studies into the “neuroscience of taste” show that our sense of taste is one of our weakest senses, and as a result, it is “highly impressionable”. Quote: “we don’t taste objectively — we almost ‘hallucinate’ with our taste buds”, so that when either idea — pumpkin spice or fall — is activated, “it will automatically trigger the other”. What’s more, he says, product marketers “have successfully associated fall with pumpkin spice to such an extent that we can’t really have one without the other”.
(Well, I know my wife can’t!)

HEALTH NUGGETS:

➢ People who drink tea may be more likely to live longer than those who don’t, according to a large study. When compared with those who don’t touch the stuff, people who consume 2 or more cups per day had a 9-13% lower risk of mortality. The findings, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, suggested the result was the same regardless of whether the person added milk or sugar to their tea, or what their preferred temperature was. Tea contains helpful substances known to reduce inflammation.
(Kinda ‘splains the Queen, don’t it?)
➢ A study shows that more paid sick leave means less death overall. The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, analyzed 2 decades of data on US deaths and compared it to stats on the hours of paid sick-leave requirements across the country. What they found was that even one extra hour of paid sick leave is associated with a measurable decrease in mortality from suicide, homicide and alcohol poisoning. (Which is ironic, because all the kids around here in their 20s keep taking sick leave BECAUSE of alcohol poisoning!)

DATELINE 20+20:
An Australian has been convicted of murdering his wife 40 years ago – thanks to a crime podcast. 74-year-old Christopher Dawson faces a possible life sentence after a renewed police investigation was triggered by the popular podcast “The Teacher’s Pet”. Dawson had opted for a trial by judge instead of a jury in Supreme Court due to his notoriety from the podcast, which 60 million people have listened to. An episode of The Teacher’s Pet set out a circumstantial case that Dawson had murdered his wife, Lynette in 1982. At the time, Dawson was a high school teacher who was in a relationship with a teenage former student and babysitter for his 2 daughters. The judge found the husband killed his wife because he feared losing his lover. The podcast, which sparked headlines around the world, received a journalism award for uncovering “long-lost statements and new witnesses”, and prompting Australian police to renew the search for Lynette’s body.
(Now I feel guilty for wasting so much time listening to useless podcasts like “Fat Man on Batman” and “Getting Doug With High”!)
(Did you hear that, Joe Rogan? A podcast CAN be used for good!)

WHY YOU SHOULD SMILE:
The science-backed benefits of smiling…
😊 Smile the pain away: Research shows that smiling while running can make you more efficient and make the run feel more manageable. It can also help you tolerate the pain of a needle. Smiles send cues to our brains that we’re okay.
😊 De-stress:  When you smile in a tense situation, your heart rate slows down, and stress starts to melt away — even if you’re not actually feeling smiley. (Basically, fake it till you make it…)
😊 Look your best: It’s a fact — we find people more attractive when they smile. (Unless it’s one of those involuntary Botox smiles!)
😊 Make a friend:  People often rely on nonverbal communication. Smiling makes you appear more trustworthy and can help deepen bonds with people faster. (Just ask any used-car salesperson!)
(So if you’re stuck in traffic right now…just smile!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Two-thirds of us say we’re adopted a “seize-the-day” mentality. A poll of 2,000 American adults revealed that 65% believe they are living more in the moment these days, compared to pre-pandemic. And that’s not all the pandemic has changed — 62% say they “treat themselves” more now than they did before. People say they are indulging themselves by enjoying “me” time (25%), their favorite beverage (21%) and shopping online (21%) more often.

BS CHRONOMETER 09.01.22

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “September” begins. In Latin ‘septem’ means ‘seventh’. That’s because back in the day when the New Year started in March, September was the 7th month.
• “First Day of Spring” in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, so designated by tradition, not any relation to the Vernal Equinox.
• “No Rhyme Nor Reason Day”, a celebration of words that don’t rhyme with any other words (aka refractory rhymes), ie: angel, month, orange, purple, silver. (Although we do take exception to including ‘purple’. Have these people never heard of a “purple nurple”?)
• “Building Code Staff Appreciation Day”. It’s like “Valentine’s Day” for planning board workers.
• “Letter Writing Day”, paying tribute to this age-old form of communication. Today is a great opportunity to reconnect with people that haven’t spoken to for a long time. It also helps you to think before you write. With modern communication, we don’t tend to reflect much before firing off a text or email. (Great, now where do I get one of those “stamp” thingies?) LINK: https://www.worldletterwritingday.com/
• “American Chess Day”, celebrating the Sept. 1, 1972 victory of American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer over Russian champ Boris Spassky, making him the first American to win the world title. Chess is often called “The Game of Kings”. (If you forget the rules of Chess, don’t worry — you’re allowed to “check”!)
• “Pink Cadillac Day”, They have an iconic place in American culture, most notably because of Elvis Presley. He mentioned a pink Cadillac in his first charting single, ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ (1955), and bought his first pink Cadillac around the same time.
• “Ginger Cat Appreciation Day”, Ginger cats are more likely to be male than female because the “ginger gene” which produces the orange color is on the X chromosome. There are roughly 3 males to 1 female ginger cat. (And yes, they HAVE souls!)
