Sheet Happens!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ US artist Sid Maurer has asked the Rolling Stones to give him credit for creating their iconic lips logo. Up until now the story has been that Mick Jagger dreamed up the symbol with art student John Pasche in the early 1970s. But the new book “Sympathy For the Devil: The Birth Of The Rolling Stones & The Death of Brian Jones” by Paul Trynka suggests the late Brian Jones discovered Maurer’s lips & tongue image in the late 1960s and even bought a picture from the painter before the symbol became the band’s logo. Guitarist Jones died in 1969.

★ Former “Dexter” star Michael C Hall is set for a Broadway return as a transgender German rock star, taking over the lead in “Hedwig & The Angry Itch” when Andrew Rannells completes his run in the show. Rannells replaced Tony Award-winner Neil Patrick Harris in the production earlier this year. Hall will take over the lead October 16th and stay with the quirky musical until January 4th. The actor made his Broadway debut as the emcee in “Cabaret” back in 1999. His latest NYC stage stint was in “The Realistic Joneses” in July.

★ 25-year-old actress/singer Vanessa Hudgens has been cast as the lead in a new Broadway production of the musical “Gigi”. The role has previously been played onstage by Audrey Hepburn, and French actress Leslie Caron portrayed the character in Vincente Minnelli’s Oscar-winning 1958 film. The new production will open for a month at the John F Kennedy Center For the Performing Arts in Washington DC on January 15 before its NYC debut.

★ And disability rights groups in Australia are demanding an apology from Kanye West after he
admonished a handicapped fan for failing to stand up during a show in Sidney on the weekend. After realizing the mistake, West said: “Is he in a wheelchair? Okay, you fine.” But what may be rankling people more is his previous comment: “I can’t do this show until everybody stand up. Unless you got a handicap pass and you get special parking and s–t.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Did a keyboard decide your baby’s name? A study led by the University of Chicago says that keyboard layouts have influenced how people name babies. This so-called ‘Qwerty Effect’, named after the keyboard name, supposedly causes people to choose names that predominantly contain letters from right-hand keys. This is because most people favor things on their dominant side. So, as most people are right-handed, they pick names mostly from the right. The trend can apparently be spotted in baby names picked since 1990 when computer keyboards became commonplace. Many of the names on the most popular lists follow that pattern. (If your name is ‘Tex’, you likely have left-handed parents.)

NO MORE NIGHT-TIME GLARE!
Nearly half of all accidents occur at night, despite 25% less traffic, and experts believe that’s caused by limited visibility. A new headlight prototype developed at Carnegie Mellon University illuminates the road without blinding other drivers. The smart headlight uses a camera and processor to track other vehicles, and automatically dims before the high-beam would reach the oncoming drivers’ eyes. The programmable headlight also improves a driver’s visibility during poor weather such as snowstorms, and detects objects in its path to provide early visual warning of obstacles. The lights are expected to be on sale by 2020, following further testing. (Hear hear! The sooner we get rid of those blinding LED headlights on BMWs the better.)
