BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ If you haven’t been able to score Taylor Swift tickets, don’t worry — she’s got you. The concert film “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour,” will hit movie theaters this fall, with opening day set for Friday the (of course) 13th of October. AMC Theatres is promising that the film will play at every one of its US locations at least 4 times a day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through its initial engagement, with many of the chain’s Imax and Dolby Cinema locations locked in to ensure the singer remains larger than life on its premium screens. Tickets are now on sale for, as you might imagine, because it’s Taylor’s world, $19.89 for adults (plus tax), and $13.13 for children and seniors, on standard screens.

★ Jimmy Kimmel claims he was ready to retire as late-night talk show host earlier this year — but the WGA writers strike changed his perspective. He made the revelation on the first episode of Spotify’s “Strike Force Five” podcast, which went live Wednesday, featuring a roundtable Zoom discussion among Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and John Oliver. He said he was “very intent on retiring” when the strike started, but “now, I realize, oh yeah, it’s kind of nice to work.” Meyers response: “C’mon, you are the Tom Brady of late night… you have feigned retirement.” But Kimmel insisted that he was “very, very serious” about packing it in.

★ It’s true that “Jeopardy!” passed on LeVar Burton, but his TV days are far from over. He’s about to become host of “Trivial Pursuit”! TMZ reports that Burton and his team are close to locking in terms for him to become executive producer and host of the new Trivial Pursuit game show, which will be aired on the CW. A source says things are almost finalized on the deal, and that the series already has a 12-episode order. Hasbro honchos apparently started considering Burton for the job after he was snubbed by Sony for the highly-coveted Jeopardy! hosting job.

★ With one week to go until the Toronto International Film Festival 2023 kicks off, the A-listers who are and aren’t attending have been revealed. Amid ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes, some stars are able to attend and promote their films, thanks to interim agreements. Among those expected to hit TIFF are Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson for “Daddio”, Finn Wolfhard and some of his “Hell Of A Summer” co-stars, Viggo Mortensen for “The Dead Don’t Hurt” and Maya Hawke and Laura Linney for “Wildcat”. A-listers who won’t be showing up at this year’s festival even though they have films there include: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Olivia Colman, Annette Bening, Cate Blanchett, Anna Kendrick, Glen Powell, and Chris Pine.
-ETCanada
★ Batman is coming back to theatres much sooner than anyone thought. Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy will be returning to Showcase Cinemas next month. In honor of Batman Day on Sept. 16, the theater chain will host a screening of all 3 films: “Batman Begins”, “The Dark Knight”, and “The Dark Knight Rises.”
-PopCulture
★ Nick Cannon’s brother Gabriel admits he’d be hard-pressed to name all 12 of his famous brother’s kids. The “Claim to Fame” Season 2 winner told EW: “I haven’t met them [all yet], but did y’all see what happened with him? (he) messed up [naming] all his kids, so I’m not even gonna attempt.” When asked if he had a note in his phone to remind him of his nieces and nephews’ names, Gabriel jokingly replied, “Google. They’re all on the internet.”

SCIENTISTS SAY (Weekend indulgence edition…):
❑ Some scientists are calling on Gen Zers to drink more beer – and lay off the trendy TikTok foods. Researchers at China’s Dalian Medical University wrote that cracking open a cold one can have “even greater effects” on gut health than fashionable probiotics  — like the ones being touted in videos – such as yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, pickles, miso, tempeh, kimchi, kefir, sourdough bread and certain cheeses.  Beer is rich in an antioxidant-boosting compound known as polyphenols that, when paired with the brew’s fiber contents, “show the potential to enhance the development of a healthy gut [micro-organism] through probiotic mechanisms,” the researchers wrote. (Great. And I thought it was bad when my kids were eating all the pickles in the house…)
❑ Well, so much for that. Apparently, beer goggles aren’t a thing. The phenomenon — when someone appears much more attractive to a person who’s had a few drinks – has been debunked. Stanford University researchers enlisted 36 people to test the alcohol-induced mirage, but found that participants did not waver from how attractive they found other people after drinking.  They did find, however, that booze appeared to give drinkers some extra confidence, making them more likely to interact with people they found attractive, while under the influence. (And thus enabling those people to see first-hand how UN-attractive people are when THEY have had a few, amiright?)

ALL A-BORED:
Do you ever feel bored at work? If you’re average, you do – for most of the workweek, according to new research. A survey of 2,000 employed US adults found that 46% are bored at work for at least 3 days per week. Among those who manage to stay engaged longer, many set professional goals to stay motivated. Like what? Well, making more money is always good – 54% said they aim to do that. Other top motivational goals included: striving to move up within the company (53%) and aiming to help create something new (50%). The survey also found that feelings of dissatisfaction typically come within 2 years of working the same role (46%).
(My feelings of dissatisfaction started after 2 years of working the same role – with no raise!)
(Pro tip: Never tell your boss that you feel “bored” at work. He’ll either find something for you to do – or find nothing for you to do  — ever!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A Swiss man wound up in the hospital after putting his head into a giant water fountain on Lake Geneva. The 20-something man somehow breached the security perimeter around Geneva’s famous Jet d’Eau water fountain and put his head into the nozzle of what is essentially an extremely powerful water cannon. It pumps out 500 liters of water per second, at a speed of 200 kph, to a height of 140 meters (460 feet) in the air. When the water sprouted, the daredevil was catapulted backward by the force. But that was only his first attempt. When he tried again, the powerful jet of water sent the man flying several meters into the air, and crashing onto the cement platform around the Jet D’Eau. Police eventually fished him from Lake Geneva, and rushed him to hospital. (…where he is said to be absolutely petrified of the IV…)
(***Caution – preview punchline***) ➢ A scientist wore a giant bird mask on his head for an entire year in order to befriend some birds – but it didn’t go quite as planned. Toshitaka Suzuki, an associate professor at the University of Tokyo, shared a bizarre photo of a man wearing a giant bird head. Taken in the forests of Nagano Prefecture, it shows a fellow scientist who wore the ‘disguise’ in order to get close to a nest of great tits without triggering their distress calls. The bird species can remember human faces and would stop their usual chirping to put out warning calls whenever they saw them approaching. Having wound up on the blacklist, the scientist disguised himself as a giant bird in order to study their chirping ‘language’. According to Prof. Suzuki, his colleague wore the disguise for an entire year, but his experiment ended in failure. Whenever the great tits noticed him approaching, they still emitted their warning calls. (Hmmm…and he was such a convincing ‘tit’, too!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2d2p9w5b

DID YOU KNOW?
A Turkish airline is looking to find out if some travelers will pay extra to avoid sitting near babies and small children. Corendon Airlines will sell an adults-only zone — no one under 16 allowed — on flights between Amsterdam and Curacao starting in November. It says people traveling without children will get quiet surroundings, and parents won’t have to worry that their crying or fidgeting kids will annoy fellow passengers. How much to enjoy one of the 93 seats in the ‘no-kids zone’? An extra 45 euros, or $49 US dollars. (I’d much rather be able to pay extra for a seat in the ‘no reclining seat in front of me’ zone!)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.01.23

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “September” begins. In Latin ‘septem’ means ‘seventh’. That’s because back in the day when the New Year started in March, September was the 7th month.
• “First Day of Spring” in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, so designated by tradition, not any relation to the Vernal Equinox.
• “No Rhyme Nor Reason Day”, a celebration of words that don’t rhyme with any other words (aka refractory rhymes), ie: angel, month, orange, purple, silver. (Although we do take exception to including ‘purple’. Have these people never heard of a “purple nurple”?)
• “Letter Writing Day”, paying tribute to this age-old form of communication. Today is a great chance to reconnect with people you haven’t been in touch with for a long time. It also helps you to think before you write. With modern communication, we don’t tend to reflect much before firing off a text or email. (Great, now where do I get one of those “stamp” thingies?) LINK: https://www.worldletterwritingday.com/
• “American Chess Day”, celebrating the Sept. 1, 1972 victory of chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer over Russian champ Boris Spassky, making him the first American to win the world title. Chess is often called “The Game of Kings”. (If you forget the rules of Chess, don’t worry — you’re allowed to “check”!)
• “Pink Cadillac Day”. They have an iconic place in American culture, most notably because of Elvis Presley. He mentioned a pink Cadillac in his first charting single, ‘Baby Let’s Play House’ (1955), and bought his first pink Cadillac around the same time.
• “Ginger Cat Appreciation Day”, Ginger cats are more likely to be male than female because the “ginger gene”, which produces the orange color, is on the X chromosome. There are roughly 3 males to 1 female ginger cat. (And yes, they HAVE souls!)
• “World Testicle Cooking Championship” (aka “Ballscup”) begins, the 19th annual event in Rudnik, Serbia. Serving up a variety of testicles, including wildlife. Yummy. LINK: https://ballscup.com/wtcc/
• “Wear Teal Day”, a day when teal is worn to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
• “Bring Your Manners to Work Day”, an annual reminder that good etiquette eases relationships in the workplace. (What does a co-worker do that drives you round the bend?)

SATURDAY:
• “V-J Day” (or ‘Victory Over Japan Day’), the anniversary of the 1945 formal surrender of Japan aboard USS Missouri, marking the end of World War II (Celebrated on this date in the US, elsewhere on Aug. 14, the date the surrender was announced).
• “Blueberry Popsicle Day”, a celebration of the flavor that leaves your lips and tongue looking like some kind of purple-fleshed alien.
• “Bacon Day”, in the US. Bacon refers to meat from the belly of a pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon.
• “Pierce Your Ears Day”, if you aren’t in the mood for piercing your lobes (or any other body part), you can opt to crank up the tunes on your earbuds, and ‘pierce your ears’ in an altogether different manner.
• “Chianti Day”, because why NOT have another day designated for wine drinking?
• “Coconut Day”, you can’t make a piña colada or a decent Thai curry without it, its water makes a great recovery drink, and its fibrous husk, when burned, repels mosquitos. One of nature’s most versatile products, the coconut plant (and its various parts) can be used for food and drink, cosmetic preparations, and decorating. (***BS Fast Fact: Despite having the word “nut” in its name, a coconut is a fruit — not a nut.)
• “Food Bank Day”, created in 2017 to commemorate 50 years since the founding of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the first food bank in the world, by John van Hengel, in Phoenix AZ.
• “Spalding Baseball Day”, paying tribute to Albert Spalding, co-founder of A.G. Spalding sporting goods company, on the anniversary of his birth in 1849. He became the first famous player to use a fielding glove, in 1877.
• “World Beard Day”, all about promoting and elevating the global status of the beard. Today, it is supposedly customary for the bearded members of a family to relax and partake in no jobs or chores. The beardless traditionally show their support by waiting on the bearded hand and foot. (Will that happen at my place? “Not by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin!”)
• “National Tailgating Day”, since 2016, to celebrate and participate in that great American pursuit of hanging out in a stadium parking lot for food, fun, friends, football, and large amounts of beer and bratwurst. LINK: https://tailgating-challenge.com/national-tailgating-day/

SUNDAY:
• “National Flag Day” in Australia, celebrating the anniversary of the 1901 date when the new flag, known as the Commonwealth blue ensign, was flown for the first time, over the dome of the Exhibition Building in Melbourne. It was later renamed the Australian National Flag.
• “Skyscraper Day”, to appreciate and admire the world’s tallest buildings. By definition, a skyscraper is any structure that clearly stands out above its surrounding environment. A loose agreement in North America & Europe puts the lower limit of a skyscraper at 150 meters (500 ft). A skyscraper taller than 300 meters (984 ft) is referred to as ‘supertall’.
WORLD’S TALLEST BUILDINGS:
5. Ping An Finance Centre (Shenzhen, China) …599m (1,965ft)
4. Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) … 601 m (1,971 ft)
3. Shanghai Tower (Shanghai, China) … 632m (2,073 ft)
2. Merdeka 118 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) … 679m (2,227 ft)
1. Burj Dubai (Dubai UAE) … 828m (2,717 ft) … 679 m
• “Pet Rock Day”, celebrating the collectible craze created by ad exec Gary Dahl, who had the idea to take smooth stones from Rosarito Beach in Mexico and market them like live pets. The fad lasted for around 6 months in 1975. More than 1 million Pet Rocks, costing $4 each, made Dahl a millionaire.
• “Welsh Rarebit Day”, saluting the traditional dish that, explained simply, is melted cheese on bread. But anyone who’s had it knows it’s far more exotic than that, incorporating butter, flour, cheddar, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, and – optionally – beer.
• “US Bowling League Day”, primarily an outdoor sport until around 1840, the game was called ninepins and was popular with gamblers. To snuff out the gambling, Connecticut banned the game in 1841, but to circumvent the law, indoor lane owners added one pin to their alleys.

MONDAY-
• “Labour Day” in Canada (“Labor Day” in the US), celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originally was to celebrate workers’ achievements in the workplace, specifically the 8-hour day movement, and to campaign for better working conditions or pay. It is considered the unofficial end of summer, with vacations ending and students returning to school around Labour Day.
• “Eat an Extra Dessert Day”, guiltlessly indulge yourself in an extra dessert today and inform everyone you know about this happy holiday (…and if they won’t participate, eat theirs too!).
• “Macadamia Nut Day”, saluting the yummy nut first found in the rainforests of eastern Australia thousands of years ago by aboriginals. Though they can be toxic to dogs, they are super nutritious for humans. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/lm2ur99
