BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Usher will be the headlining performer at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime show. Apple Music, the NFL and Roc Nation made the announcement yesterday. The game takes place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11. Usher said: “It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before.” This will actually mark his second Super Bowl appearance. He performed — and saved the day — for the Black Eyed Peas when that group headlined the big game in 2011. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/45fnj9uv

★ Congratulations, brother! 70-year-old Hulk Hogan is officially a married man — for the third time — as the WWE icon wed his 45-year-old girlfriend Sky Daily on Friday. They tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Clearwater, Florida, with their closest family members present. Daily donned an elegant white wedding dress with 18-karat white gold earrings and a matching bracelet and necklace, according to photos. Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, wore a traditional black tuxedo with a simple white corsage.

★ A trailer has dropped for Netflix’s “Squid Game” reality series, which launches November 22. The clip for “Squid Game: The Challenge” shows the 456 contestants competing in a range of games inspired by the hit Korean show – Netflix’s most-watched of all time. Contestants will compete in challenges that were in the show plus “surprising new additions,” with dozens eliminated as the game progresses. The colossal $4.56M prize package is far and away the highest ever for a competition show. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/buhhm6nb
★ Russell Brand has thanked supporters for “questioning” the allegations of rape and sexual assault made against him by 4 women. In a new 3-minute clip posted online, Brand said the week since the claims were published had been “extraordinary and distressing”. He did not directly address the claims made against him – instead speaking of the attempts made to censor him online. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5d95744u

★ “Expend4bles” didn’t do much to stop the box-office dip seen over the last 2 weeks. The action sequel is estimated to have earned a franchise-low $8 million opening domestically over the weekend. Pre-release projections had the film earning around $15 million, similar to what “Expendables 3” earned in 2014. It’s possible that not having Sylvester Stallone or the rest of the cast around to promote the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strike contributed to the lower numbers. And Expend4bles may not even take #1 at the box office as its low opening put “The Nun II” within striking distance of keeping the top spot for a third weekend, making it too close to call, at last check.

★ Pauly Shore has launched a grassroots campaign to become the leading man of a not-yet-in-development Richard Simmons film, asking fans to reach out to major Hollywood studios to help “make it happen.” Shore, the star of “Encino Man” and “Bio-Dome”, said his efforts were sparked by a groundswell of fan interest. He even predicted it would result in an Oscar. However, it has been reported that Simmons is aware of the effort behind a biopic, but does not want to be involved.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Taylor Swift – managed to get over 35,000 first-time voters to ‘swiftly’ register to vote, as a result of her Instagram post for National Voter Registration Day. 50,000 others confirmed they were already registered. Vote.org reported a 115% increase of 18-year-old registrants compared to last year, and said over 1.3 million visited the site, thanks to Swift’s post. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/zvk6x4zf
• Lizzo – her current dance troupe stood behind her as she tearfully accepted the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award on Thurs. night. In her speech, she said: “Black Music Action Coalition, y’all really are about that action. Thank you so much for this, because I needed this right now.” She’s being sued by a group of former dancers for supposedly creating a hostile work environment.
• Mötley Crüe – has shared a demo version of the song ‘Louder Than Hell’ — with the original title of ‘Hotter Than Hell’ — from the upcoming 40th-anniversary edition of their ‘Shout At The Devil’ album, out Oct. 27. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2p98c3ut

• Lynyrd Skynyrd – singer Johnny Van Zant won’t rule out a new album. Despite the fact that the last surviving member Gary Rossington died this year, Van Zant said: “We had all intentions of…making a record and doing it with Gary. But he got sick and so it just never happened. But there are songs out there that we could record in his honor. So, who knows?”
• Kane Brown – Friday, he released his new single ‘I Can Feel It’. It includes re-creation of Phil Collins’ famous drum solo and chorus from ‘In the Air Tonight’. Collins is also credited as a songwriter of the new tune. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/f3pjbtcv
• Garth Brooks – baked his first-ever cake for wife Trisha Yearwood, to celebrate her 59th birthday on Sept. 19. He posted a pic of the 2 with the evidence, and said on Inside Studio G: “It wasn’t good, trust me”. But she disagreed, saying: “I’m not just being nice, this is really good.” But Brooks may have a secret weapon. Quote: “I live with a chef. I got some tips.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mv7maar6
SHOOTING THE BULL
PUT ANOTHER STICK TO AN AUSSIE:
The National Hockey League is trying to grow its game with a big push down under. It featured its first-ever games played in the Southern Hemisphere over the weekend, with 2 pre-season tilts between the LA Kings and Arizona Coyotes, played in Melbourne. In addition, the league is expanding its street hockey program to Australia – where it’s common to see the game of cricket played in parks and on quiet roads. The NHL’s street-hockey program is aimed at 6-16-year-olds, and has been used successfully in non-traditional hockey markets such as Las Vegas, Nashville and Tampa. If popular in the Melbourne area, the street hockey program will be expanded across the country next year. And if you think this idea is odd, consider this: Hockey actually has a 100-year history in the country, and its semi-pro Australian Ice Hockey League has 10 teams, made up of a lot of expatriate and some former pro players.
(Hey, if Jamaica can have a bob-sled team, anything can happen…)
(And you know, there’s also field hockey, so…)

NEW FOOD NEWS:
❑ Is butter better, and is margarine marginal, when it comes to your health? If you ask the experts, there is no cut and dried answer. New York registered dietician Jillian Kubala points out that butter is a natural product but is high in saturated fat, which can negatively impact heart health. On the other hand, margarine is lower in saturated fat and cholesterol, but may contain trans fats, which are also associated with heart disease. She advises that if you opt for margarine, buy one labeled as trans fat-free. But even better, consider plant-based butter substitutes — or using olive oil on bread. Olive oil is actually GOOD for your heart. Plant-based “butters” are typically made from vegetable oils such as coconut, soy or avocado. (Butter vs. margarine was the eternal argument at my house – until I compared prices!)
❑ Ohio State University researchers say they have discovered the cure to dreaded ‘garlic-breath’. After a recent series of tests, the Buckeye school announced that “Whole milk plain yogurt prevented almost all of the volatile compounds responsible for garlic’s pungent scent from escaping into the air.” They found that yogurt alone “reduced 99% of the odor-producing raw garlic volatiles.” They say that their discovery could lead to a better understanding of certain foods that double as combatants of clove odor. (Also, a whole new angle for yogurt commercials!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ By mimicking the desert-dwelling chameleon, Chinese researchers developed a cheap, color-changing, energy-efficient, and cost-effective coating for houses and other buildings. They say the new material could keep buildings cool in the summer or warm in the winter — without using additional energy. Their research was inspired by the Namaqua chameleon of Africa, which alters its color to regulate its body temperature as conditions change. This critter in particular appears light grey in hot temperatures to reflect sunlight, then turns dark brown once it cools down to absorb heat instead. Many systems, such as cooling paints or colored steel tiles, are only designed to keep buildings either cool or warm, and can’t switch between modes. Experiments showed that the new revolutionary new coating made of specialized microparticles is significantly cooler than white paint and steel tiles, and in winter, it is slightly warmer than a passive radiative cooling system. The researchers say that the color-changing system could save a “considerable” amount of energy for regions that experience multiple seasons, and is inexpensive and easy to manufacture. (Great for places like here, where we often see 3 seasons in one day!)
➢ A 10-year-old has been reunited with his beloved ‘Lego man’ after creating a “missing person” poster. Jack Steel was devastated after he lost the figurine, because it was specially designed – and based on Jack himself. To find the missing Lego man, the British schoolboy created a ‘LOST’ poster—offering a reward of £2 for whoever found it. The poster begins: “Has anyone seen this Lego man? “He is very special to me.” Alongside a drawing, Jack wrote: “Light brown quiff (a hair style) with matching eyebrows. Hawaiian Shirt (blue with palm trees and an orange stripe on the bottom. Dark green pants.” Luckily, Jack’s Lego man was found in the local park by a schoolgirl. The girl’s mom then contacted Jack’s mom after seeing his missing poster on Facebook. The family was so relieved it all worked out that they gifted the girl an extra box of chocolates for finding the missing Lego man.

DID YOU KNOW?
If you have ever “borrowed” a shopping cart, you’re part of a global $800million problem, says the Food Marketing Institute in Washington, DC. A news story out of New York state a few years ago noted that a typical grocery store can lose $10,000 a year due to stolen shopping carts. And, in the summer of 2021, a Safeway in San Francisco reported that it lost 160 carts in a single month — more than 5 per day. Now, customers there must ask a store employee for assistance if they want to push their cart outside the store. A single cart can easily cost retailers $300 (in Canada). [Judging by what I’ve seen along the riverfront, maybe they’d get some of them back if they floated!]
